The rotunda will remain open until late morning. The president made his final trip on air force one renamed special air mission 41 in his honor. There was a special military sendoff as it was loaded to the plane. Many family members were on board for the trip including former president george w. Bush and other members of the bush family. Including four Florida Governor jeb bush. Lets go to rehbogen in washington, d. C. With more on this ceremony at the capitol. Reporter you just talked about all the people who have been lining up to see george h. W. Bush lie in state. That line could very well go all night, all day tomorrow, all of tomorrow night and into 7 00 a. M. On wednesday. It seems as though a lot of people have lined up for my many from many areas of the world. Bushs body will be brought back to texas for one more service at st. Martins Episcopal Church thursday morning before he is moved to his president ial library in College Station via a custom train that has been painted blue and white with the big numbers 41 on it. He will be laid to rest on a pair on a family plot next to his dear wife barbara and their daughter robin who died at the age of three of leukemia. You have been there all day. What stood out to you as you watched people lined up for hours to get a chance to pay tribute to the former president . Reporter certainly the respect they had for him. I walked into the Capitol Rotunda to just try to say a quick thank you. He was president before i was born but nonetheless many people in my generation have reaped the benefits of some of the decisions he made. I never lived in a world with the cold war. That is thanks to him and many people my age did not. We have that to thank m4. The other thing i noticed is how long people were willing to wait not just to see the casket but also to wait in line once they got in there to thank the bush family. Some of the members were waiting at the s get at the exit to shake their hands. Thank you. As people share their memories of the former president we reached out to a woman from San Francisco who worked with the 41st president in washington during his years in office and as Vice President. Jana katsuyama joins us now. She spoke with Lori Firestone, the white house social secretary. Reporter as the social secretary firestone was in charge of seeing large state dinners and also small, private events. She devoted more than a decade to helping the bush family from 1984 through the end of bush seniors presidency. Sidency. When Lori Firestone opens her photo albums here i am in the oval office. Reporter her personal memories show another side of president ial history. It was such an amazing time in my life. Reporter every day for 12 years, she served as social secretary for george and barbara bush. First, when he was Ronald Reagans Vice President and later when he was elected president himself. This was in 1989, so that would have been right after he got elected. And that was when we were in california meeting bob hope. This is christmas. Reporter firestone said over the years, the social duties i was arranging all the flowers, running all the staff in the kitchen, and doing a lot of other things. Reporter often involving planning parties. We are in warsaw here. Reporter with an important purpose. Everywhere he went, he would entertain because his philosophy was that he wanted to break bread with all of those foreign leaders. Particularly if he was going to have to negotiate something. Because he felt like he wanted to know the person. And that is the kind of man he is. Reporter firestone says she will remember his sense of humor, and generous spirit, caring for family, friends and staff. Eight man she says she saw many times in private, but the value of personal relationships put the value of personal relationships above Political Party affiliation. He was devoted to many people and he didnt ask whether you are a republican or a democrat. I mean, he worked across the aisle. We dont see that today. I think that is what has made me so sad. To think of losing this really giant of a man who was so great for our country. And we dont seem to have that today. Firestone says president h but president h. W. Bush was also fearless. She remembers he sent her a photo after he went skydiving in the 70s and said it doesnt matter how old you are if you want to do it, then do it. Firestone was invited to the funeral, but she said she asked if she could attend the Family Service that is going to be held in houston. What a fascinating job she had and the memories she must have. Reporter absolutely and she stuck with it throughout that whole time, so she really was in a very special place to be able to serve him and also his place in history. Its nice to hear her personal story behind the scenes. Thank you. Flags are being flown at half staff at the state capital in sacramento to honor the former president. California governor elect gavin newsom called for a moment of silence to honor mr. Bush before convening the state legislature today. In a statement he said, america has lost a voice for unity and civic engagement. Governor jerry brown says, america has lost a true public servant. The federal government will be closed on wednesday and Financial Markets will also be closed for a day of mourning. Traders on wall street also observed a moment of silence before the markets opened today. The president s service dog soli was by his side until the end. All he came from americas that dogs, which places service dogs with disabled military veterans. Solis next job will take him to walter reed medical center. To San Francisco where one of the longest host a hotel strikes in history has come to an end. 2500 workers spent 61 days on the picket line as their union worked out a new contract with the Marriott Hotel chain. The Union Members have now voted to ratify the new contract. Amber lee . Reporter we saw a lot of happy Hotel Workers here tonight. They told me they tell me the new contract is everything they asked for and they are ready to get back to work. [ crowd chanting ] reporter a victory chant for San Francisco Hotel Workers after a bitter, 60 oneday strike against Marriott Hotels. The president of unite here local to said the vote was nearly unanimous 2 said the vote was nearly unanimous. 90 yes vote. Reporter in early october, thousands of Marriott Hotel workers went on strike in San Francisco and in other cities across the country. The workers they it took perseverance to walk the picket line for two months in smoke polluted air, heavy rain and even the thanksgiving holiday to get what they described as the best contract in the in the country for hotel employees. It was unbelievable. I am happy and overwhelmed. Its just overwhelming. Reporter workers lined up to vote inside the park 55 hotel. The new contract will pay housekeepers 1. 76 per hour more. Its retroactive to august when their previous contract expired. At the end of the fouryear contract in 2022, their hourly wage will go from 23 per hour to more than 27. I am very relieved and happy. Reporter this single mother tells me just yesterday, she took this holiday photo with her three children worried about how she was going to pay her bills. Finally, i can go back to work and have real wages. And i can take care of my kids now. Reporter Union Officials say the workers will not have to pay more for healthcare, and housekeepers will have more time to clean rooms where guests have opted not to have daily service. Its great. I feel so proud so proud. Reporter loss of jobs due to automation will require at least six months notice. Union leaders say female workers will have new protections against sexual harassment, a safety button when they are harassed by guests. We actually won protection. Developing news in marin county where police in san rafael are looking for the person responsible for a Fatal Shooting in the canal area around 6 00 p. M. Near Pickleweed Park on canal street. A man was found dead inside his car. He is described as a young adult. Witnesses reported seeing another man running away from the scene of the shooting. Police are investigating this as a homicide. It would be san rafaels first homicide in seven years. The San Jose City council is preparing for a vote tomorrow on googles huge new campus. A group of pastors are fasting and protest, of the vote which is ecstatic expected to win approval. The project would bring 6 million to 8 million square feet of development to downtown san jose with an estimated 20,000 job but opponents argue it will bring higher rents and an even bigger shortage of Affordable Housing. The city cannot even reach its Affordable Housing goals now, so to say that bringing the google campus is going to make that easier to us doesnt make sense. City Officials Say they are working to address concerns by requiring 25 of new housing in the area to be affordable. They say they tried to negotiate the best deal possible for all residents of san jose. New at 10 00, an Oakland Police patrol car was involved in a Chain Reaction collision today about 4 30 this afternoon on international boulevard and 22nd avenue. A witness tells fox 2 the patrol car collided with a small sedan and then hit a taco truck parked on the side of the road. There is no word yet on what caused the crash. Police say no one was hurt. In the north bay, a couple whose dog was stolen are hoping a new tip will pan out. This is their fifth night searching for lucy. She is a twoyearold bulldog who saft was caught on surveillance video. Deborah viejo is in santa rosa. The dogs medical issues are a big worry. Reporter she is supposed to be on medication for liver problems. Her picture is on a lot of flyers. Reporter the couple promises no consequences to whoever took lucy and is offering a 5000 reward. We just want her home safe. We love her. We adore her. She is our family member. Reporter posters are going up after a sunday tip. A woman on the west side of santa rosa saw a loose dog a loose dog resembling lucy. Searchers are scouring the area in case she was abandoned there. Not so much for tomorrow morning or afternoon, where it slows down but the day before it looked like this would be kind of a midmorning through tomorrow evening thing, but now it looks as though its going to be kind of an afternoon through evening thing. The warning looks dry except for a few showers. There is the system we are tracking. You can see it throwing up a few showers up north. You can see green showing up. The dynamics arent to that area yet, but when they get there, the rain will fall. For us, the rain dynamics and the moisture dont link in until around noon. To the camp fire in butte county where officials have revised the death toll. The number of People Killed is now at 85 down from 88. The revision comes after officials realized that one of the victims remains became separated and placed into different evidence bags. The number of people reported missing is also lower. 11 people are now unaccounted for. That is down from 24. Still to come, its been two years since the deadly ghost ship warehouse fire. He retired Alameda County superior court judge was assigned today to preside over the trial. Judge vernon maka sallah retired at the end of next year but at the end of last year but will handle the special assignment. The defendants are both charged with 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter, one count for each person who died that day. They are set to return to court next month. Their trial could begin in the spring. The deadly fire two years ago had many agencies in oakland saying they would do better to protect the public. Another 38 have been put on fire watch for faulty alarm systems, and another 21 may soon also be put on fire watch requiring 24 7 lives fire monitoring. But not one of these fire watch buildings has fully complied with fire and Building Codes. We have assisted approximately 120 buildings. 100 of which we have actually been able to get on a path towards complaints. Reporter david keenan is the safe keeper for a nonprofit Advocacy Organization dedicated to making life safety improvements to unpermitted dwellings. To advocate for Building Code changes to allow such drawings, and to help tenants move into legal dwellings if need be. But getting there is quite another matter, and even though the mayor has issued an executive order to avoid displacement unless there is an imminent hazard. The problem is implementation. We did find that the order was universally ignored by the actual regulators. Reporter housing advocates say while at the highest levels of oakland government, there is a ton of sympathy for the plight of the tenants. And that the permitting level has a lot of heart and fast rules that have left these tenants for two years, essentially living in limbo. In other words says keenan, the city bureaucracy conduct has been such that not one single unpermitted building has yet to attain legal status. Even though many such illegal and potentially Dangerous Buildings still exist occupied. What you create is a game of whackamole. You close down one warehouse. A new push is underway to get help for homeless students at san jose state and new numbers suggest there are more than you might think. The University Student Homeless Alliance is calling attention to what it considers a growing problem. Live coverage from azunna smith who spoke with a student who is now living on church property. Reporter julie and frank i spoke to a 19yearold sophomore who is seeking shelter across campus at grace baptist church. He shares a room with four other students unable to afford a place to live while still trying to keep up with their studies. Studies. This is what 19yearold burgess calls home on property owned by grace baptist church. He shares it rentfree with four other students from san jose state who are homeless. Its a lot easier. I dont have to worry about where to sleep. Reporter he knows its not ideal but he considers it a godsend after two months couch surfing and sleeping at the universitys Martin Luther king library. I was in a really bad place at the time. Honestly i was failing my classes. I couldnt study correctly. Reporter he is one face in a growing issue. According to the Student Homeless Alliance, numbers he received from the Chancellors Office indicate 4300 students have experienced homelessness in the past year. I cant do my job as a professor if my students dont have the basics. No matter what i do, no matter how well i teach, they cant perform at their highest level and graduate. Reporter Scott Myers Lipton is a faculty advisor for the Homeless Alliance. He says the cost of housing on and off campus is too high. A single studio apartment at san jose state for one month is about 1700. If they share its 1100 or 1200. The Home Alliance is demanding at least 10 safe Parking Spaces at the seventh Street Parking garage, a dozen beds in dorms for homeless students to stay for 60 days. Anything could help at this point. Its a grim situation for a lot of people. Reporter burgess is now focused on looking for a job, saving money for his own place and hopefully graduating to become a graphic designer. Going to school is hard. If you dont have a place to stay or a roof under your head, its not very appealing to keep going to school. Reporter i reached out to san jose state tonight but i have not heard back. The Student Homeless Alliance plans to bring up their concerns when they camp overnight at the Student Union this thursday. Julie and frank . The number 4300 kids who are homeless there or who have experienced homelessness in the last year is just off the charts. I was curious about one thing. You said the Homeless Alliance is demanding at least 10 safe Parking Spaces at the garage. Is that so they have a spot where they can sleep in their cars . Reporter yes. They have found a lot of their homeless students either stay up Martin Luther king library or sleep in their cars. The seventh Street Parking garage is right underneath where the San Jose State Police Officers Office is. So they feel that is a safe place for homeless students and they say this is just a start. 4300 sounds like a lot, but they say anything that can help with this problem. Absolutely. All right. Thank you. Now, to San Francisco, where voters could decide if free tuition at city college continues for the next 10 years. Students getting free tuition now are part of a Pilot Program set to expire next year. The proposed Charter Amendment being pushed by supervisor jane kim what ensure subsidized tuition at city college for at least another decade. The board of supervisors plans to vote next month on whether to place the measure on the 2019 ballot. At the State Capitol there is a push to expand free preschool in california. Sacramento assembly man Kevin Mccarty introduced a bill to make an additional 100,000 children ages three and four eligible for free preschool. The proposed expansion would cost taxpayers about 1. 3 billion over three years. Governor elect gavin newsom said he wouldnt comment on specific bills but he generally approves expanding early education. Californias new legislature was sworn in today with a democratic supermajority. Reporter family members came to John Muir Medical Center to visit barbara brozman, a mother and grandmother ly vang living in critical condition. This was the holiday so we were all torn up. Reporter bozeman was hit by a hit and run driver as she attempted to cross lonetree lane in her wheelchair just before 3 00 early sunday morning. Whoever hit her and left her in the street like that, i just dont understand. How you could do that. Her spine has two fractures in it. She has a deep cut inside her head. Her pelvis is completely broken. Reporter relatives say theyre not sure why bozeman was out at that hour. They say saturday she had been treated and released by Delta Hospital in antioch but no one in the family knew why she had been in there or in whose care she was released. The hospital would only say it is cooperating with police. Bozeman was struck by the hit and run driver near the hospital. Im not sure why she would still be in that area. Reporter relatives described bozeman as outgoing and gentle. She is loud, a party person. Just the star of the room. Reporter relatives say bozeman became disabled 20 years ago when she was hit in the head with a gun. They say the assault made it difficult for her to walk. Family members cared for her in her antioch apartment. Her family has this message for the hit and run driver. Please just turn yourself in. Reporter police are looking for surveillance video. The family is offering a 5000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Rob roth, ktvu fox 2 news. Looking at the weather i am seeing some showers or lights wrinkles showing up in far Northern County north of sonoma and marin counties. More showers are headed our way. The system is not strong in comparison to last week but as the system comes our way, it will bring rain to the tune of instead of two and three inches like last year, a quarter of an inch to halfinch. But you can see some showers and even some snow flurries showing up around clear lake, mountain, Snow Mountain yours of ukiah. Some light, scattered sprinkles. Santa rosa not getting reports of this hitting the ground but this is what we could see tomorrow morning. Widely scattered showers, very light, and as the day goes on, it will become more assertive. We will see more significant rainfall, more towards noon time, 2 00 to 4 00 in the afternoon.
