>> as scott reiss reports, he had a brilliant career that pointed him in the hall of fame. >> reporter: willie mccovey was the complete package. he was so menacing at the plate that he was called the scariest hitter in baseball. it was almost contradictory to the raw power with which he swung the bat, the precision and grace with which he fielded his position. in fact, his defense earned him the nickname stretch. it was his persona that truly secure his place in fans hearts. he was warm, engaging and instrumental in securing his status as the first san francisco giants hero. he didn't step into the pigs big scene he burst into it in 1959 going for-4 in his debut against robin roberts. he went on to hit 354, on route to being named national league rookie of the year. through seasons later he led the giants to the world series against the yankees. in game seven, trailing 1-0 with runners on second and third, he strode to the plate for what hook -- would become his most famous at bat. >> i thought everyone else thought it was going to win the series. >> reporter: bobby richardson's catch into the game, the yankees won the series in willie mccovey never reach the fall classic. the tonight that success, the individual accolades came fast and furious. six times national league all- star. in 1969, most valuable player, all the while combining with willie mays to form one-two punches. he finished his 22 seasons as one of the most prolific left- hand hitters in baseball history. 521 home runs, more than 2200 hits in 2200 rbis. a slamdunk for cooperstown where he was inducted in the hall of fame in 1986. >> i was inducted by the city of san francisco where i have always been welcome like the golden gate bridge and cable cars i have been made to feel like a landmark. >> reporter: the willie award given annually is his legacy and of course the statue that sits adjacent to the cove that bears his name. a fitting resting spot. just like the ones he sent soaring into the stands for parts of four different decades. willie mccovey was truly a baseball giant, dead at the age of 80. >> tributes are pouring in for willie mccovey not just as a ballplayer but as a friend and inspiration to those who followed. this one is from hunter penn who tweeted, willie mccovey, the spirit a baseball lives in you. rest in peace. bill russell wrote, i am extremely sad to hear of the passing of my dear friend, san francisco giants legend willie mccovey. i will always have fond memories of him. our thoughts are with his family. others are also weighing in. for more remembrances, we are going to employee -- amber lee . >> reporter: fans have been stopping here at the willie mccovey statute. there telling me he loved to talk baseball and she was described as a humble man with a special ability to connect with people. >> reporter: at&t park, home of the san francisco giants, is quiet and serene on this wednesday night. some giants fans came to reminisce about willie mccovey. >> i was fortunate enough to be a batboy during spring training and he came over and i didn't actually know who he was at the time but he put his arm around me and we talked baseball. >> willie mccovey gave a lot to simply just go. >> reporter: former mayor brown talked about his friends contribution to the city and baseball. >> when you think of the san francisco giants, no matter who else plays for the team it is still mays, willie mccovey no matter what. that is the brand.>> reporter: the three willies, himself, willie mccovey and willie mays throwing out the first pitch at a giants game. >> willie mays through first write down the center and the catcher caught it. willie mccovey three second and he did around about overhead. i did third and i wrote it. willie mccovey grabbed me and said, you did it! >> reporter: near union square, his photo is on the wall. he retire pastor told me about their friendship and shared with me about his wedding when he would when williams was invited to speak. >> -- >> reporter: announcer john miller described him as one of the all-time great players of the game. >> is very sad because he was one of the giants living monuments. >> he wasn't arrogant at all. even throughout his later years he was loyal to the giants.>> reporter: willie mccovey retired in 1980. many fans we met never saw him play yet they came to pay respects. team officials say there will be a public memorial with details announced at a later date. mark is joining us. you have interviewed him over the years. what stands out about him? >> what stands out about this day is that i feel emotionally drained. i think i speak for a lot of giant fans who grew up in this bay area and followed the giants. back then, every game was not on tv. >> you listened on the radio. >> the way they would describe him was as an intimidating figure striding to the plate. it was mays, mccovey and you can't help but feel a piece of your childhood is taken away. he brought those kind of memories. what i think about willie in recent years as everyone knows he had numerous surgeries on both knees, a couple of them were botched and didn't work out as planned. this man never made that about his life. he loved baseball. you wanted see him complaining about it. you could talk all day about his statistics, his career. he was still joyful. he still loved the game of baseball. so many statistics to try -- tell the true story but you can't help of of him going for- 4 in his first game as a major legal. he was going against robert robertson. he was agile enough to play out bill. he was actually pretty fast. that is the same -- shamed that the knee injuries took it away. when he retired he liked golf and even that was taken away from him and he spent much of his latter days in a wheelchair. like i say, he didn't let that define his life. he was still smile and talk about the game. he was unbelievably go to every giant home game even though it was an absolute ordeal to get him into his box upstairs. i remember one of my first assignments was to cover the day he actually retired as a giant. >> that i stand here at the end of a long and successful career , however i am sad because that career has to come to an end. thank you, ladies and gentlemen for helping making this the happiest day of my life. if there is a second life i would like to come back as a major-league baseball player. thank you for being here. >> if there is a second life he would like to come back as a major-league player. i think that sums it up. 21.5, 22 years in the major leagues. people forget that he played briefly for the oakland a's. it is an incredible memory and it feels like a little piece of your child could -- childhood taken away. >> it was said so eloquently that he was probably my most beloved giant in history. >> when the giants moved here in 1958, willie mays was obvious start. but he was about new york in millie -- many ways. he was the first real san francisco giants history and the fans latched onto him. you could make the case that he was the most passionate. >> he just got married couple of months ago. >> we will be back with more. >> thank you, mark. >> at 10:30 we will hear from the ceo of the giants, including his thoughts on willie mccovey's recent wedding that he attended. the man suspected of opening fire in a pittsburgh synagogue has been indicted. the crimes he has been charged with plus an update on the survivors recovery. it is not a bad night for trick-or-treating. we will talk about how that went down to what is coming up, which is a bit of a warm up. kids in the bay area are dressed up for halloween. we will check in with costumes and see how one community had to improvise because most homes do not have doorbells. i'm dianne feinstein and i approve this message. upon stop and go traffic and crashed into a lexus in front. the driver of the lexus was killed. the tour bus crashed into another car, pushing it into the back of a ups semi. the driver of the second leaving the hospital and shared some of his thoughts and memories . >> you can't help but flashback on all the memories on the field with him. for all of us and off the field. >> reporter: larry baer was at the hospital with willie mccovey's family grieving. he remembers having the honors presiding over his wedding last august. >> that is something you wanted to do. he knew his health was pretty fragile and he wanted to give her a ring and let her know how deeply he cared for her. >> reporter: he said it was an amazing service will a baseball hall of famer's. his wife said, every moment he will be terribly missed. he was my best friend and husband. living life without him will never be the same. his daughter allison also said, i am grateful that my father passed peacefully surrounded by family and friends while listening to his favorite sports channel. larry baer said he never let his health problems keep them from the game. >> it was hard to see is just -- to see him go through the pain. he had so many surgeries in difficult ailments but never affected him coming to games and going into the clubhouse and asking the guys to support the drives for the junior giants.>> reporter: he said he was always there for younger players as an inspiration and role model. >> will he would be in spring training and be present in they could talk to him and talk about his experience going through good times and tough times. >> reporter: he remembers his sense of humor that was vibrant until the end. >> i sat on his lap during a science -- signing session as a kid. i mentioned this recently and he kept his sense of humor and said, yeah, that is the reason why i got so many knee surgeries. you sitting on my lap. >> reporter: a san francisco legend, remembered and loved. >> he taught me life lessons about humility, grace and honor and being able to take fame and handle it the right way. >> reporter: larry baer says the giants organization will be working with his family to plan some sort of tribute . he says he knows the people in the bay area will want to honor the legacy and wife of willie mccovey. >> that quote from his wife just getting married back in august and emotional day. the fact that he came straight from the hospital and wanted to share with pretty much all of the news organizations. he shared those memories and you mentioned the wedding. he talked farmer. >> this is not a psychoactive product and it is not a threat to my children or any other children. >> reporter: the issue of marijuana, illegal crop has become divisive in this agricultural accept or reject measure double g that has been put on the ballot for either allowing or disallowing the cultivation of starter marijuana plants. there are certain restrictions in place for size, location. they hope to construct a new 66,000 square foot greenhouse and lease the space to eric hollister for marijuana cultivation. if residents vote no, the long- term farmers say their family
