[ applause ] >> the white house is not saying if the president will support a bill calling for tougher background checks on buyers or raising the age on gun purchases. a news conference will be held this morning about how the sheriff's department stopped a student from carrying out a shooting at his high school. the student was overheard talking about the plan in whittier, california. and the security guard who heard it alerted sheriff's deputies. authorities seized several weapons and other evidence from that student's home. the student is described by authorities as disgruntled. the u.s. supreme court refused to hear a challenge to california's 10 day waiting period to buy a gun. gun rights groups argued that people who already own guns and pass background checks shouldn't have to wait 10 days. and the supreme court refused to hear a second case. california uses some of the money from gun sales to track down illegal weapons. the court once again refused to accept what they call the gun lobby's extreme interpretation of the second amendment. but clarence thomas criticized the other members of the court for not tackling the gun rights issue. if a lower court treated another right so cavalierly, i have little doubt this court would intervene. but as evidenced by our continued inaction, the second amendment is a disfavored right in this court. students who survived the shooting in parkland, florida, will meet in tallahassee today. the students arrived to applause from fellow high school students in tallahassee, florida. despite the students' lobbying efforts, the couple stand trial. curtis taylor and laura rogers are accused of luring a 21-year- old to a park in east oakland where she was stabbed, beaten, and set on fire. ktvu later learned that the two women had developed a relationship while working together at a fast food restaurant and that did not sit well with taylor. last night yet another earthquake rattled the danville area. it was a magnitude 2.8 quake that hit at 6:15 in the evening in the same area where four small quakes struck yesterday morning. the largest was a 3.0. these quakes were all in the area around month vista -- mono- that vista high school. most of the quakes were too small to notice but for some people, it jolted them out of bed. >> felt like being nudged awake. >> it woke me up. actually, they don't bother me, just a little roll and i went back to sleep. nothing fell off the shelves or anything. >> reporter: the quakes appear to be happening on the calaveras fault. it's been a year since the coyote creek flooding. heavy storms forced thousands in san jose to have to evacuate their homes. there's a news conference this morning involving city, county, and state leaders along with the water district and the army corps of engineers. the water district will talk about the installation of flood barriers near rock springs park and finalizing an agreement with the army corps of engineers to proceed with a feasibility study that developing a potential federally supported improvement project. >> when coyote creek flooded, first responders struggled to rescue people and get them to safety. hundreds of homes were evacuated as coyote creek reached a record height of 15 feet. first responders went door to door trying to make sure that everyone was evacuated. but search and rescue teams didn't have enough people to respond to every call. >> towards the end we were in the boats, the water was getting deeper. and we could not longer keep our feet on the bottom. >> reporter: this was the worst flooding or water rescue disaster i've had to deal with in the city of san jose. >> we were peeling over teams away to help people in trees. we needed more people. >> the san jose fire department is increasing the number of high water rescue vehicles. it's a direct response to the flooding of coyote creek. and it purchased a vehicle that can drive through up to 8 feet of water. and they are adding more metal and inflatable boats along with personal water craft. ktvu has obtained video of a deadly police shooting. coming up. the body camera footage that shows an altercation before a bart
