Berkeley police into this homeless encampment. And you can see theyre going through their flashlights. A couple of officers have video cameras. They are going 10 to 10 and telling people who live here that they have to leave this area. I spoke a short time ago with one of the officers who said that yesterday some of the people here got notice that they had 24 hours to clear out. That is what is going on here right now. A couple of days ago there was an issue here at this homeless encampment. There was a fire that broke out. The people who live here say the person who was behind the fire did not live here. They say they have structure in order to their encampment. The city manager has told ktvu that they have gotten complaints from the community. The fire that happened a couple of days ago out here may have been the last straw for the city. And thats why people got notice that they had to clear out. And that is what you see going on right now. There are some supporters who live nearby who wanted to come out and show their support for the People Living here and that them know that they empathize with what is going on and they do not think its right that the people are being forced out in the middle of the night. We spoke to one woman who explained her concern. I live in a rentcontrolled apartment, i am very lucky. These people are not fortunate, they do not have anything that they can afford to live in. Reporter again, about five minutes ago, we saw several dozen Police Officers come to be in cabinet with their offices and telling people who live in this encampment know that they have to care that. The officers say they are willing to be patient, they do not have a quick timeline that people have to get off of the property, but they are in the process of clearing everything out, and while they do that, they have closed off the street while they do this work and conducted this sleep.
