In the south bay, people mark this holiday by taking part in a national day of community service. About 200 volunteers helped cleanup Mary Jane Hammond park. San jose city councilwoman said there is a simple reason so many people joined in to help. It was their commitment to the community, and that was to honor doctor kings dream of making our community a better place to live. Volunteers from nearby campbell took part in todays cleanup. A major part of the legacy of doctor king is community service, and our reporter traveled around oakland today were hundreds of people honored doctor king by helping others. Reporter schools may have been closed today for the holidays, but this campus was buzzing with people creating a garden. This was not a day off for doctor Martin Luther king jr. A man accused of stealing a box truck in San Francisco let Highway Patrol officers on a chase that ended in the south bay. The chp said at one point the driver began going the wrong way. The chase ended when the truck crashed into the sunnyvale golf course. The suspect ran away on foot, and officers were unable to find him. The truck was reportedly stolen as the work crew was delivering appliances. There is a and to an internal Investigation Underway after a man was shot last night. An armed man fired shots outside of this Police Station on City Center Drive yelling that he wanted officers to kill them. Riverside county Sheriff Department said a girl called 9112 a home in the town of paris were 12 brother and sisters were locked up in filthy conditions. Investigators say some of them were chained to the bed with the youngest just two years old. Seven of the siblings are adult rating from ages from 18 years old to 29 years old. The 17yearold that escaped was so malnourished that deputies initially thought she was just 10 years old. Deputies arrested the parents who are David Allen Turpin and louise anna turpin. Katie oxley thomas was a mother of three people from san jose and is one of at least 42 people under the age of 65 years old who have now died from the flu. Our reporter sat down with her family today and they wanted to warn others about just how dangerous the flu can be. Reporter by the time katie was admitted here she was already in serious distress. Then it was just a matter of hours before the flu became fatal. Before she got the flu, she was in good health. The 40yearold mother of three ran marathons and did yoga. The family never expected the illness to hit her so hard. It is very shocking to us. We thought you would leave the hospital in a couple of days and come on. Reporter on january 4, just three days after her diagnosis, she died from the flu. Doctors believe the flu led to pneumonia and that led to septic shock. We went to pick up the kids at 4 30 pm, and by the time we got back, she was at code red and trying to save her. But she was already gone. She knew she was there and we were supporting her and that she could fight this and just get through this. But she couldnt get through it. She couldnt find it. Reporter across california, at least 42 people younger than 65 years old have died during this flu season with five of them being in santa clara county. The family is not sure why katies case was so severe and whether a hand injury that she had could have compromised her immune system. One doctor said that she had never seen anything progress like this. Reporter that is why katies family is speaking out to honor the vibrant and joyful woman that they lost but to shed light on the dangers of the flu. They hope others will get the flu shot and if they do get sick they will not underestimate the threat. Most to get the flu recover from it, and a handful of people have your dont. You just never think it is going to be your daughter, but you want to take it serious. Reporter the family has ordered an independent autopsy. They have also set up a fund to help the three children that she leaves behind. Do they talk at all about at what point they realized they needed to get her to the hospital . She was diagnosed with the flu and sent home with the advice to rest and possibly take tamiflu. A spokesperson for the Emergency Management system confirmed the employee was temporarily moved to a new role and no longer has access to the warning system. People across the wife received an alert informing them a Ballistic Missile was incoming and it was not a drill. The chp is investigating a shooting that happened early this morning on highway 280. The incident shut down all lanes of traffic on that stretch of the highway for several hours this morning. Reporter has a story. Reporter when the chp opened up the freeway just before 7 00 a. M. This morning, i will step out of the way and you can see that the traffic is moving pretty smoothly. For about four hours overnight though, all of the southbound lanes were shut down to traffic because of an investigation of a shooting that happened. It happened next to the 280 southbound alamein he offer out. Offramp. The chp says there were 326 victims that smacked three or six victims involved in the shooting. We unfortunately dont know. We are just investigating and collecting evidence and making proper investigative arrangements. Reporter it was the victims of the shooting who called to report the incident and were able to drive himself to the hospital where investigators have been trying to speak to them about what happened. The shooting on the freeway overnight shut down the southbound lanes of 280 around Mission Street for about four hours before they open up the freeway again and 7 00 this morning. 7 00 a. M.
