Members of the campaign delivered more than 94,000 signatures to the Santa Clara County registrar of voters office. Critics of judge aaron persky say he was too easy on brock turner, the former stanford student convicted of sexually assaulting a woman. Turner was set free after three months but was required to register as a sex offender. The group says persky should be removed. Organizers collected far moshe the 58,000 signatures needed to put the issue on the june ballot. The voters of Santa Clara County are saying loud and clear that they will hold judge persky accountable for his pattern of bias in favor of athletes and other privileged offenders who commit sex crimes and violence against women. Current and former judges are supporting persky and say they worry if he is removed from the bench, judges will start to give rulings based on Public Opinion instead of the law. Shelters are open to families like hers. But with 4,000 Homeless People citywide, the need for more resources is insurmountable. Reporter the Interfaith Council of Alameda County invited oakland city leaders and Community Members to a meeting today at oaklands Mormon Temple to get the ball rolling on a project that will provide safe shelters like shipping containers and tiny homes on various Church Properties in the community. These tuff sheds are shelters here at sixth and castro in oakland are already up and running many people calling them home and what the council is looking to do is similar to this but they want to do it more efficiently, they say. That money is the most the city has ever received. It will help fund 57 housing and Homeless Services programs in San Francisco including funding for nearly 3 dozen new Housing Units in the tenderloin south of market and mission bay. An offduty San Francisco Police Officer had life threatening injuries today when he crashed his motorcycle on the way to work. The crash happened around 5 40 this morning on northbound 880 and 7th street in oakland. The chp says he crashed into the back of a pickup truck, flew off his bike and into the center divide. The officer was taken to a local hospital. No one else was hurt in the crash. In washington, negotiations over immigration between the president and lawmakers today prompted a disparaging comment from the president that is sparking controversy around the world. The crude remark was aimed at certain countries that the president apparently views in a very negative light. Heather holmes is in the newsroom now with more. Reporter the comment was relayed by at least two people briefed on a meeting with lawmakers in the oval office. Both republican and democratic lawmakers who were in the oval office were apparently taken aback by that comment. The president then reportedly went on to question why the u. S. You will recall that earlier this week, the white house ended protections for 200,000 salvadorans who fled here in the wake of devastating earthquakes. The whole reason the president and lawmakers were meeting was to hash out a deal on immigration. Democrats want to reinstate protections for the socalled dreamers, 700,000 or so immigrants brought illegally to the u. S. As children. Republicans want any protections for dreamers tied to funding for a border wall or some form of increased border protection. There has not been a deal reached yet. However, we still think we can get there and were very focused on trying to make sure that that happens. The president has been clear about what his priorities are in that process. A deal to pass daca protections alongside a package of Border Security measures is finally within reach. As the immigration meeting at the white house showed, almost everyone in this body is interested in passing daca protections into law. Reporter a Bipartisan Group of senators has apparently reached a deal on immigration and one that would extend protections for the so called dreamers. But the white house rejected that deal and told lawmakers to keep working on it. In the meantime, there has been considerable outrage to the president s comment that i mentioned about haiti, el salvador and african countries. In response, a white house spokesman issued a statement which did not deny the comment from the president. It says, quote, like other nations that have meritbased immigration, President Trump is fighting for Permanent Solutions that make our country stronger by welcoming those who can contribute to our society, grow our economy, and assimilate into our great nation. Lawmakers have until next friday to try to hammer out a deal and avoid a government shutdown. Democrats want immigration policy to be part of that deal. The house approved a renewal of the fisa act. Its the federal law limiting how u. S. Spy agencies can monitor americans communications. But an amendment aimed at adding more protections was shot down. This after the president s tweets questioning fisa suggesting it may have been used to, quote, badly surveill his president ial campaign. He doesnt even know what the bills are about. And he is putting out tweets. The president later clarified the tweet. It already caused confusion on capitol hill. Democrats pointed to the tweets in an attempt to delay the vote. But it passed. New details tonight about the your general search for two missing toddlers as their parents appeared in court in stockton. 41yearold aaron wettles and his wife 32yearold princess walker were arrested on felony child abuse and child endangerment charges. They appeared in court today on outstanding warrants. Both parents have a prior history of arrests. Police say wettles and walker are not cooperating in the search for the 20monthold twins a boy and girl. A friend of wettles who attended the hearing called him a good man. Also tonight, we are learning about one of the victims. She was a mother and businesswoman. Rob she was a mentor, mother and wife. Reporter they are devastated over the loss of the 61yearold Real Estate Agent well known in the community of montecito, her familys home destroyed by tuesdays mudslides. Her friend and Business Partner spoke to us by phone. Rob 17 people died in the mudslides ranging from age from 3 years to 89 years. The Santa Barbara county sheriff read their names. Hundreds are working in treacherous concerns including 30 people from a task force that were just in the area three weeks ago fighting the thomas fire. Crews demolished a house in pacifica today that was undermined by erosion. The bluff was washed out from under the house so they had the house moved on the lot 20 feet closer to the sidewalk a few years ago. Unfortunately, it didnt work. Erosion kind.
