A pedestrian hit by a car and killed on interstate 80 east of ashby avenue in berkeley. Chp reports it happened around 1 40 am and involved a white dodge that hit a person walking in the right lane. Its unclear why that person was there. The driver called authorities to report the collision. We will have more information when it comes in. As for traffic, sal is off but we went to check in. One of its officers died after his patrol unit was rearended on the nimitz freeway in hayward late Christmas Eve. Chp said officer Andrew Camilleri and his partner were parked on the side of the freeway watching for drunk drivers when their suv was hit. Henry lee reports on what happened. Reporter chp officer Andrew Camilleri was killed by a motorist under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The same driver he and his partner were trying to stop on Christmas Eve patrol. Today is not a holiday for the Highway Patrol. Today is a loss of one of our own. And the officers were parked in their patrol vehicle near the on ramp to southbound 880 when they were rear ended at high speed by a red cadillac. That led to a call no officer wants to hear. There was an officer hit southbound 880. We have an officer down. Officer down can i get units started southbound 82. Reporter the driver, chp says, was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana. These irresponsible and senseless acts need to stop. Reporter officer cammalleri, in the passenger seat, later died at the hospital. His partner, jonathan velasquez, was treated and released. Both were wearing seatbelts. The impact was so severe it turned the Utility Vehicle into a compact vehicle. That gives you an idea of the speeds that were involved. Officer camilleri, was 33 years old. He had only been with chp for a year and three months. Andrew was drawn to this profession due to his courage and integrity and his desire to serve. Reporter the officer lived in tracy with his wife and three children. Children that were expecting their father to come home and open gifts. Instead, he chose to work today. Reporter a chp honor guard is watching over the officers body at the Alameda County funeral announcements have not been announced. The suspect is facing serious felony charges and will be transferred from the hospital to jail once he is medically cleared. Governor brown released a statement saying we are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic loss of officer camilleri. We join his family, friends and the entire california Highway Patrol in mourning his death and and honoring his sacrifice. In honor of camilleri, flags at the State Capitol are being flown at half staff. Officers across the state arrested hundreds of drivers for dui over the Holiday Weekend between friday evening. Officers arrested 790 people and with maximum enforcement expiring last night at 11 59 pm, those numbers will go up. Deputys have shot a Domestic Violence suspect after Officials Say the man came at them with a machete. This happened shortly before 2 00 monday morning at a home on princeton street in hayward. Someone called to report a Domestic Violence incident. At the scene, chp found a woman who said she was assaulted by her husband. When the man was found on the patio of the home, Officials Say he took a machete from his waistband and try to attack them. One deputy fired at the suspect and hit him. Deputies arrested the suspect. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. His name has not been released. Fire officials in santa rosa state a fire was caused by discarded smoking materials. Fire crews responded to a one story apartment on russell avenue highway 101. They were able to quickly put out the fire which caused 25,000 in damage. The woman who lives in the apartment was not home but arrived as fire crews were finishing. They say the fire was started in the bathroom. No injuries were reported. An Investigation Continues into a Christmas Day house fire in San Francisco. It was reported shortly before 1 am on monday on prospect avenue. Four people were displaced. Firefighters on the scene managed to get everyone out of the burning home safely. The 2alarm fire caused a lot of damage to neighboring homes on both sides of the structure. Every day, glide serves three meals a day, relying on volunteers to get the job done. Reporter as melody nichols and her sister decorate for christmas, they know there is a lot to be thankful for. Its been a rough road. I would have to say this was a huge, humbling process for me. Reporter nichols is a single mom and is active in her church. In june, things were looking good. She was planning to move and had taken on a temporary position but then she started having pain in her lower right side. Doctors cannot figure out what was causing it. They kept running tests and telling me everything was normal. During that time it was really painful for me. Reporter she leaned on her friends from church and her family but the pain got worse. I went to the emergency room and they did a ct scan and ran more tests. They told me that everything was fine. Maybe i had an ulcer. They were going to refer me to a specialist and refer me to a doctor. My test results came back normal. The ct scan came back fine. It was frustrating. I knew something was wrong but they told me everything was okay. Reporter and then one day when the pain was once again unbearable i went to the emergency room and a doctor rushed in and basically let me know that night i came in, the radiologist was not on board. They sent my ct scan to another hospital and it was misread. They let me know they have to rush me into emergency surgery because my appendix was on the verge of bursting. I was terrified. Ive never been under the knife or had surgery. Reporter the surgery went well but recovery took time. And her temporary job did not provide sixtime or disability. Reporter during this time it was very difficult. I am a single mom. Im the only one that provides for me and my son. I did not have any source of income. I remember getting to the point where i was very stressed out wondering how i would pay for rent and get those paid. Reporter she went by the Welfare Office but was told even in her desperate situation, she did not qualify for government help. But the man helping her did not give up. He left and i remember sitting at the desk. He came back and told me that he had good news and he told me about season of sharing. Reporter nichols said she never heard about the season of sharing bond. This was started in 1986 to help families in crisis with housing and emergency needs. She filled out the paperwork and waited for a call. I never got the phone call. When i did not get the call i was thinking, okay, i was not approved. Then i really started stressing out. Rent was almost do. I did not know what i was going to do. I went to check my mail. I was on the phone with one of the sisters from my church and i saw the envelope from season of sharing. I was like, oh my gosh. We prayed really fast. I opened it and it says i was approved. I remember crying and praising god and thanking him for providing. Reporter this season of sharing fund p for rent that month and got her over that rough spot. Today she is back on track, ready to celebrate the holidays. I was in a time of need. Theres probably people out there that are going through worse than i did. Reporter melanie is doing well and has recovered. Shes working and once again planning to move to Southern California for a new opportunity with her church. She said shes excited to start this new chapter in her life. That is such a great story.
