A new report shows three dams have problems that are similar to the ones that caused the oroville dam spillway to fail last february. The spillway is at the guadalupe a dam and they have extensive cracks. The spillway of the anderson down has cracks. Concrete problems. What is being done to prevent issues at the spillway . We are joined by catherine deputy officer for the Santa Clara Valley water district. Lets talk about some of the concerns after seeing some research and studies that have come out and how it could affect some of those communities in san jose. We have done a conditional assessment of several of our dams spillways in the last several months per a request from the division of safety of dams. The spillways were constructed 70 or 80 years ago. They are. They were built to the standards of the time. They are part of what we call our aging infrastructure within our water system. The actual timing of these findings is good because we are in the process of performing seismic retrofits at several of our dams. We will incorporate improvements to these spillways at the same time. You mentioned the seismic retrofits. Talk to us about what those will do and how it will bring it to more modern time standards. With the actual seismic retrofits again the dams were constructed at the same time as the spillways. They are 5080 years old. There were built to what was known at the time as seismic standards. We have gained a lot of information and insight into stability of dams over the last 50 or 60 years. The standards have changed. We are now going to retrofit the embankments right now at three or four of our dams in order to come up to the standards that are in place today. As i said before the spillways are going to be improved in the same manner. What is the process for those upgrades in terms of draining the dam how long or how soon could we see changes . We are in the process of designing those changes. It is a multiyear process to develop the designs and put together the construction sequence for each of the dams. We anticipate beginning construction on our first dam in 2020. And some dams will take two years to be constructed. To reconstruct. The anderson dam will take longer because of the size and complexity. We will be in construction through most of the next decade. To improve and to strengthen and prepare these dams for operation for the next 60 years. Do we have a backup plan in case we get another really wet winter like we had last february and if those reservoirs continue to fill over the brim . We have in place seismic restrictions in terms of how much available we can maintain in each of those reservoirs. Until such time as the dams are structurally made a sound again. In the anderson dam specifically we are going to operate it at a lower level than we have in past winters. In the event we get a series of strong storms in the coming year. We believe with our modeling that will prevent major spills over the spillways in this coming winter. We will be assessing and reassessing those every year until deconstruction gets underway on these dams. Thank you for joining us. We could use some water to fill those reservoirs. I dont think it is coming anytime soon. A dry forecast not only for the holiday weekend. But perhaps longer than that. What is happening around the bay area. Stagnant pattern again.
