You are telling me this vision happened sometime shortly after 5 00. That is correct, a little bit after 5 00, we began receiving reports of a major collision that took place here at the toll plaza at the bay bridge, westerly direction. Came out on scene, as you can see behind us here, apparently a big box truck transporting a bunch of equipment had somehow come through, struck several vehicles that were at the toll plaza waiting to go through the toll. Damaged vehicles. Continued on in a northwesterly direction and struck a toll booth, toll boxes. Unfortunately the toll booth, the toll taker was killed on impact. The driver of the box truck as well as the passenger that box was both ejected on to the roadway, suffered significant injuries. And right now we are working to determine exactly what the cause of this collision was. All right. And so to have had this kind of impact he must have had quite a bit of speed. Any estimate how fast he was going. It seems like he wasnt going slow through the toll plaza. We dont know the exact speed, right now it would be a guess. But obviously as you can see the amount of damages there are. There was speed involved. Now there was that was a cause of the collision or other factors will be looked at. You said he struck a number of vehicles before hitting the toll plaza, anybody injured in the course of this incident as well. Several of the drivers in those vehicles suffered injuries, all with were not life threatening. Again, i know you said this is preliminary, any idea a cause, is it too early to tell . Way too early to tell. All of these things will be taken into account, speed issue, impairment involved, whether there was a medical condition involved. So we are going to look at all these things. Also if we can get an idea on impact to the toll plaza and the traffic impact through the course of the day. A number of hours until all the rains reopen . There is significant damage to the toll booth that was taken out as well as several lanes adjacent to that. And there are vehicles that are still stuck in there right now that need to be cleared some, there is going to be at least 4 5 hours before this is cleaned up. Any idea it does appear he struck one of the support beams for the entry, any idea if there is damage to the structure. Too early to say. Well have folks out here to take a look at this as well. If you take a look at your screen, there is the toll plaza this morning. Police are investigating a deadly crash. A truck hit several vehicles at the toll plaza and slammed into a toll booth. The toll booth attendant was killed on impact. The driver and the passenger were both ejected on impact and they are suffering major injuries. And now as you can see live on your screen, there is a huge backup for anyone going from the east bay into San Francisco, there are at least four lanes that are still shut down and no estimated time on when those are going to reopen. The San Francisco Police Department is investigating a deadly officer involved shooting, investigators say an officer shot and killed a man after he carjacked a man being driven by a state lottery worker. It happened late yesterday morning, officers arrested the suspects four alleged a accomplices a short time later in a second vehicle in the citys bay view district. Police killed the suspect in the lot terry van a few blocks away. Sky fox flew over the scene in the bay view, the suspect was killed at the Alice Griffith Public Housing complex after that carjacked lottery van was supposed to stop. The vehicle stopped at griffith and fitzgerald street. The suspect exited the vehicle. Officer involved shooting occurred. That suspect was transported by ambulance to San Francisco General Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The medical examiner identified the perch killed killed is Olentangy Liberty neil. Following breaking news, chp investigating a horrific crash this morning. Weve just learned that the toll taker has been killed, we go to ktvu reporter christian kafton at the scene with an update, christian, terrible situation out there. Reporter yeah, terrible situation, as you said. Chp said this was in fact a fatal collision so you can get a sense of how much damage was done and why this proved to be such a deadly accident. Can you see that panel truck was left of that panel truck, there is a front. You are looking at the inside of the panel truck as it split open and ejected a lot of what appears to be sound equipment out on to the road. How hard this impact was, that is the toll booth, that is what remains of the toll booth as we said earlier, the toll booth operator killed in an accident. Show you what happened. Shortly after 5 00 this morning, it was dark at the time. Chp telling us they are getting reports of other drivers in the area who were in the toll booth plaza, the toll plaza that right around 5 00 a. M. The paneled truck was speeding through the toll plaza. Unknown just how fast the driver was going at the time. Reports that we are getting from the chp is that the vehicle was headed in a northwesterly direction, in other words crossing the various lanes, hitting vehicles and ultimately impacting the toll booth, that is where the fatality occurred. We have interview that we did earlier this morning who explains what happened. My understanding he was driving in a northwesterly direction. And then somehow came in contact with those vehicles who were already stopped, waiting to go through the toll booth and ended up colliding into the toll booth itself. That is where the toll booth operator was killed. Thats correct. Telling us once that impact happened, the driver and a passenger inside that panel also ejected out on to the road. We do see evidence of chp and emts working here trying to save those individuals who again were eject from the vehicle, we are hearing that they were taken to Highland Hospital with what are being categorized as major injuries unknown condition at this point. We are waiting for an update from chp, what this means practically for anybody who is going to be heading westbound over the bay bridge is that there will be delays. Can you anticipate that there will be lengthy delays, it is going to take chp they said at least 4 to 5 hours conservatively to try to reopen these lanes. And at least four lanes are closed down, that includes 14 where this incident where this incident occurred. 15, 16, 17. The fast track only lane. At this point we can also tell you that the bus only lane also that is restricting the toll plaza to about half of its regular capacity. So as traffic approves it it is going to have to slow down, relatively few booths that are in operation right now. , so if you are traveling westbound into San Francisco from oakland, you might want to look for an alternate route or try to use public transportation, possibly bart to get into the scene. Christian, just to clarify in the toll booth lane, the 14, 15, 16, 17 those lanes were all had personnel in them, had those cashiers in them. So, you know, it sounds like those are the most impacted folks. Thats right. Reporter thats right. If you have traveled through the toll plaza you know how the configuration, fast track only lanes, some have toll booth operators, this is clearly with a toll booth operator sort of on the north side of the toll plaza. Right before, again, you get to the fast track only lane. That is where this is right here. Currently we are seeing the bus only lane because its been closed off. But, that means that again, like i said, at least six lanes now that would have been able to carry cars, would have been able to carry traffic are now closed off as this Investigation Continues for chp. Christian, would imagine they are going to get some of that cleaned up. By monday morning there is so much damage to that area where the truck impacted, there might be lanes closed for maybe a week or at least a couple more days, would think, right . Reporter thats one of the questions that we had for the chp, how much damage has been done to the toll plaza. You can see certainly one booth missing. But it appear that the truck split and wound up against one of the supports that for that structure over the toll plaza. Unknown damage that truck caused. Get an engineer in to see whether it needs to be prepared. That fix we are looking at here certainly hours, possibly days before it is completely repaired. A lot of questions and work ahead. It is a developing story this morning. But it is something that we will be following all morning long. A deadly crash at the toll plaza. We have a live report coming up shortly. But good to have you with us, everyone. Im frank mallicoat. 8 00 on your saturday morning. It is saturday december 2. Lets go right now to that story, because the chp is investigating this crash. Yes, one toll taker has been killed. Ktvu reporter christine captain has been talking to chp officers at the scene and has an update now with more information. Reporter yes, the latest from chp is that this has impacted eight lanes here at the bay bridge toll plaza. Take a look here. You can see the aftermath of that accident. The panel truck split in two. The driver ejected. And the operator of the tollbooth was the one who was killed. As we opinion over to the right, you can see how far the tollbooth was thrown in the course of the accident. The tollbooth operator unfortunately killed in the incident. Lets take a look at video of what it looked like earlier this morning. The accident happened shortly after 5 00 a. M. Witnesses telling chp that the driver of that vehicle was heading west towards the toll plaza, at some point in time, started veering northwest, crossing several lanes of the toll plaza before striking several vehicles. Then hitting that tollbooth. Again killing the tollbooth operator. The driver of the truck and a passenger of that truck, also both thrown out of the front window. Those two transported to a hospital in oakland with what are being categorized as serious injuries. For anybody now approaching the bridge, hoping to go west, towards San Francisco, from oakland, this means it is going to be a very major delay, as you approach the area. We talked with the chp about that earlier this morning. I would say more than a couple of hours. Plan on at least five to six hours, where this team is going to be needing to investigating and then cleaned up. All approaches through the bay privilege come through this toll plaza so expect if you go westbound in the city, there will be significant delays. Reporter so coming back to our live look here, you can get a sense of just how big this delay is going to be, with eight lanes closed off, including the fast track only lane, on the north side of the approach to the bridge. You can imagine that it is is going to be a very lengthy process to make it through the toll plaza, and on to the bridge. Again, the estimate that were hering is that at least five or six hours before all lanes are reopened. And that could very well be an optimistic guess, because we have not so far seen anybody here to begin the process of removing the box truck or removing the debris in the road at this point in time. The tollbooth is still in the road at this time. At this point, this is being treated as a homicide investigation, because this crash did result in a fatality. Again, at this point, chp still not clear on exactly why this crash happened. Whether the driver fell asleep. Whether there was any indication of any kind of intoxication. All of that under investigation at this time. Frank and claudine . You know, as we are talking about how this happened, with the driver crossing several lanes, hitting vehicles, and maybe being out of control by the time he actually hit the tollbooth, does it look like he hit it from the side . It is kind of hard from our perspective to see where he might have entered, because it initially, it was trying to figure out if he hit it head on. Reporter yes, it is looking as if he impacted at somewhat of an angle. I couldnt give you how many degrees off he may have been, the driver may have been, but it does appear that that impact happened at somewhat of an angle. Again, the tollbooth was thrown down the road. So were not clear on exactly how all of this happened. Also not clear on whether any of this was captured on camera. As you might well guess, that would be something that chp would be looking at as well. But tollbooths, the toll plaza, is certainly one of the areas that they monitor traffic coming and going, so they may be reviewing video of this accident trying to put it all together and figure out exactly how this collision happened. And im kind of curious, at least at this hour, are they still honoring the fast track . Or do they have toll collectors in all of the lanes as so many have been shut down . Reporter it is unclear from where we are right now. It does appear that there are vehicles going through, certainly, on the Southern Side of the toll plaza, but we cant see, i cant see from my perspective. It looks as if some of the vehicles are simply going through some of the fast track lanes in the middle of the lane. But the fast track only lane on the far north side of the plaza, all those lanes are closed down. And the bus only lane, again, on the far north side of the toll plaza, also shut down. It will take some time. If not today, maybe days to come. And get that all cleaned up. Very tragic. Thanks so much for that report. We want to show you now a traffic map that shows kind of where this backup is. Five or six hours. This will change and get worse as those hours progress, as people get up and try to go into the city. You can see, it is red, as you might expect, on that approach to the bay bridge toll plaza. But as you can see it going up into emeryville and starting to turn orange. And 880 on grand, you can see the back jum starting there. Can you imagine this on a commuter day, on a monday or tuesday . It would be terrible. But each on a saturday, you know but even on a saturday, you know as we head around 10 00, the end of the morning show, people are going in to shop are or anything else, so if you have plans to go into the city from the east bay, keep that in mind and you might want to see if you can take an alternate route. Today marking one year since the ghost ship warehouse fire in oakland that killed 36 people. In just a few hours, family, friends, city leaders, and First Responders will honor the people who died. A memorial starts at 10 30 this morning outside of that warehouse. It will end at 9 00 tonight. A chaplain with the Oakland Fire Department who comforted family members and First Responders after that fire says the pain and sadness of that tragedy is still very raw one year later. A lot of us who were involved in the Emergency Response aspect of that continue to think about what transpired that night. And are continuing to be deeply affected by what happened in those days afterwards. Never have seen so many people who have lost their life in one place. It is a tragedy. The fire started at an unpermitted party and exposed flaws in the Oakland Building inspection system. The city says changes have been made and has added more building inspectors and hired a new fire chief and Officials Say they are working to bring several other properties up to code. Two defendants in the ghost ship fire are scheduled to appear in court monday morning. Each man is charged with 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter. A judge will decide whether there is enough evidence in the case against these two suspects. And the individual tax cuts could expire by the end of the 10year budget period and it could hurt middle and low income families down the road. An Investigation Continues into a deadly officerinvolved shooting in San Francisco. Officials say it all started with the carjacking of a van driven by a state lottery worker. More on what happens next and what we have learned about the suspect. The San Francisco Police Department is investigating a deadly officerinvolved shooting. Investigators say an officer shot and killed a man after he allegedly carjacked a man being driven by a state lottery worker. Police say the carjacking happened yesterday morning. Officers arrived and found four alleged accomplices a short time later in a second vehicle in the bayview district. Police killed the suspect in the lottery van a few blocks away. Sky fox flew over the scene of a shooting at the corner of fitzgerald and tkpwreufr ith in griffith area, at the apartment complex. Ent complex. The vehicle stopped at griffith and fitzgerald streets. The suspect exited the vehicle. An officerinvolved shooting occurred. The suspect was transported by ambulance to San Francisco General Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The medical examiner has now identified the person killed as 42yearold tieta oneal.
