Fire Officials Say it appears the garage filled with gas which was ignited by the pilot light on the water heater. A veteran Alameda Police officer was the target of a mail bomb. Weve been told that a stamped food long package with the officers name on it was delivered last friday to the officers home in alameda. When his wife opened it, it exploded. She was burned. She suffered hearing loss. The Police Officer was working at the time. He wasnt at home, but when he found out about it, he immediately reported it on his police radio. My wife just received a package at my house and it exploded when she opened it up. Reporter so far, no ones been arrested yet but the investigation is focusing on gang members who may have been arrested by that officer. New this morning, federal authorities in georgia, theyre investigating the death of a postal worker who was shot and killed. She was shot last night at a post office in the atlanta suburb of decatur. Witnesses say the suspected gunman had been watching that postal worker from a laundry mat next door. The suspect reportedly ran away. No arrests have been made yet, and theres no word yet of a motive. The Oakland School Board Meeting was packed last night with hundreds of students, parents, and teachers protesting plans for budget cuts. The new superintendent says the problem is what to do about a budget deficit. We have to say this money needs to go to our schools, no cuts to any school. This is my fifth year teaching and every year, theres been less resources, theres been less support. Reporter the crowd filled the Board Meeting room. Many brought signs and say they blame the board for not having better oversight over years of budget deficit. Some blame former School Superintendent Antoine Wilson who left for washington d. C. After a few years in oakland. The new superintendent who is a former oakland teacher and principal says she understands the Community Concern but the state requires that the district have a 2 reserve to be fiscally solvent and she explained why she has proposed a target of 15. 1 million in cuts. Not only do we have do make sure that we are budgeting for our students, for our reserve, but its important any good healthy district ensures theyre putting away money above the reserve. Reporter the superintendent said funding has decreased with declining enrollment. There were some decisions made in the last two years in terms of trying to do the best things for students, but not taking into account that we cant spend money on everything and not reprioritize. Im here to echo the message that equity has to be front and center as they move forward in any cuts that are made. Our District Needs to address the lack of transparency around processes, around hiring and fiscal responsibility. We have not made a final decision on anything. Reporter Board Members called on the district to provide details on what would be cut by their next meeting on december 6th. Then they want public input on solutions before their final vote. A new study shows just 30 of High School Freshmen in california are expected to earn a bachelors degree. The report says in many cases, the problem is students did not take the right prep classes to get into college. The issue effects both high achieving and struggling students. Researchers say california has Lower High School graduation requirements than many other states and students may not have enough english and math classes to get into public universities. The jury in the trial of the man charged with killing kate steinle in San Francisco will begin their fourth day of deliberations this morning. They wrapped up day three yesterday without finding a verdict. The jury had a question on monday for the judge but its not clear what that question was. Prosecutors say Garcia Zarate intentionally fired a gun on San Franciscos pier 14 and killed kate steinle. The defense is arguing the shooting was a tragic accident. Lets go back to the desk. A sad story, the Napa Valley Community stunned by saturdays deadly hitandrun crash that killed four members of one family. Jared horn, a baseball player, pitcher at cal was the only person who survivorred that crash. His father, darrell, younger brother, joe, along with his uncle and cousin from the seattle area all died. The horn family is well known. They are loved by people from the napa area schools, law enforcement, and all over that community. For them, its unfathomable. We visited them yesterday, and it was heart breaking. You wont find anybody in this valley that could find anything negative about that family. Hes a great carrier of the torch for that family. Unfortunate circumstances for sure. Hes a very strong young man. Hes going to be okay. Reporter school and Community Leaders say theyll do whatever they have to do to help the family and theyre calling it a miracle that jared horn survived when everyone else in that car was killed. It is a crime that spikes during the holidays. Thieves going to peoples homes and walking off with packages left at the door. There is a program in campbell designed to track and catch those package thieves. Is it going to be there when i get home. Is it at the door. Constantly checking with the neighbors. Reporter new parents say their Shopping Habits have changed since their son arrived three months ago. The worry over what can happen once an ordered package arrives, also represents a new threat according to campbell police. Youve heard from people who have had their packages stolen . I have and its pure frustration. Reporter captain gary berg shared this video showing a grinchlike culprit grabbing a package and running off. These crimes accelerate during the holidays so for the second straight year, the department is launching its Package Bait Program to catch would be thieves. Were using this as an opportunity to remind thieves that there are packages out there that contain gps trackers. A tracker leads police to the thieves in minutes. Police advise having packages delivered to places where people can receive them, ask for store delivery so you can pick up in person, and ask the shipper for a specific delivery time and require a signature. Officials say while surveillance cameras and the Bait Package Program may deter most criminals, the best deterrent is proactive recipients. Sometimes we ship things to my parents house because my mom works from home sometimes. Reporter experts say its good advice if you have a relative or friend home during the day who can collect your packages. The thief in that Surveillance Video was never caught because that was not a bait package. Police say if you recognize that person, call campbell police. San Francisco Police are reviewing Surveillance Video after two men robbed a goodwill store. One of the men indicated he had a gun and approached an employee. The suspects got an undisclosed amount of cash and then took off. The crime is disheartening for many in the neighborhood. Later this morning, a teenager from santa cruz will be charged in court for the killing of an 8 Year Old Girl two years ago. What makes this Court Appearance different is this time, he will be tried as an adult. Adrian gonzalez was 15 when he was arrested on suspicion of luring Madeleine Middleton to his mothers apartment where hes accused of raping and killing the little girl. Officials in san jose are investigating an animal abuse case. People in one neighborhood say somebody is attacking their cats. Two cats have been shot with arrows in the past two months. The first happened in early october. Neighbors tried to catch the cat and take it to a vet but they couldnt catch it. The arrow eventually fell out of its ear. Last week, a second cat in the willow glen creek complex was hit with an arrow in its abdomen. That cat was rushed into surgery. People are very concerned. I mean, it started with one cat. That was scary, but when it happened to the second cat, it becomes a real issue. It becomes not an accident. Reporter a third arrow was found in that same area. Both of those cats are expected to survive and recover. The food and Drug Administration is warning dog owners about giving pets bone treats. About 68 reports have come in about pet illnesses related to them and several dogs have even died. The treats are packaged for sale including treats described as ham bones, a pork femur bone, rib bones and smoky bones. The warning also includes chicken bones or other bones from your kitchen table. Some illnesses include gastrointestinal obstruction, choking, cuts, and wounds in the dogs mouth. The San Francisco board of supervisors [inaudible] its a private street. They bought it at auction for 90,000. The street is oval shaped and has about three dozen homes but the Homeowners Association wants the property back. Were learning more about the man accused of flying a drone to drop leaflets over the 49ers and raiders game sunday. Authorities charged the man with illegally flying a drone over levi stadium. He has since been released but it is believed the leaflets are linked to a Youtube Video in connection to a group called the red x society. This is the same symbol that was on the papers dropped at the 49ers game. This is video from one of the groups social media sites showing previous drops over another football field. We notified local agencies in the area to be on the lookout. We also made a call to the Oakland Coliseum because we knew the raiders were playing a game at the same time. Reporter police say they were able to tip off east bay authorities to look for the man and arrest him at the raiders game. Investigators have confiscated the drone.
