>> reporter: on saturday night jared was behind the wheel traveling westbound on i-80 when they were hit by a driver left the scene. the impact overturn the vehicle causing fatalities. five cars were involved in the crash which left six injured including a child. that hit and run driver of 47- year-old from sacramento was booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence and felony hit and run. cal baseball coach said in a statement jared is a respected and beloved member of our team as well as an incredible student athlete, teammate and friend. we will give him any and all support as we can as he goes through this unthinkably difficult time. the cal baseball family would rally around gerrit and his family to help them pick up the pieces of their holiday weekend during its maximum enforcement period. 76 people were killed statewide and more than half of them were not wearing their seatbelts. the chp made 1057 dui arrests during their maximum enforcement period which began at 6:00 in the evening on november 22 and continued through 11:59 last night. a man who escaped from the palo alto courthouse was arraigned today. he was arrested last week. he is being held on $1.5 million bail. his alleged accomplice of 47- year-old was captured yesterday by u.s. marshals as he was leaving the fairmont in san leandro. events could face additional charges including attempted murder of a federal agent. both men were charged with an armed robbery at a verizon store in february. series of wrapped up their third day of deliberations. the jurors who are deciding the fate of josi garcia had a question for the judge. it is not clear what the question was. prosecutors contend he intentionally fired a gun on pier 14 in july 2015 killing kate steinle. court today in doctrine. he was ordered to remain in custody without bail and will be back in court next week. they say he somehow managed to charter a plane and made his way to san jose on a commercial flight. he was captured in stockton near where his brother lives. he has admitted to killing a woman nearly 40 years ago. he was found not guilty by reason of insanity. two cats were reportedly shot with arrows in a willow glen area of san jose. it happened in the same condo complex. neighbors are now afraid to let their pets go outdoors. >> reporter: residents say someone is targeting cats in this condo complex. two have been shot in the last two months. the first happen in early october. neighbors tried to catch the cat but they were able to capture this photo. it shows breaking windows and sending debris into the street. it happened on 10:00 this morning in bernal heights on mission in bosworth streets. 19 homes were evacuate it for three hours. officials say it appears the garage filled up with gas and was ignited by the pilot light on the hot water heater. we have learned that a veteran police officer was the target of a dangerous mail bomber. a stamped foot long package with the officer's name on it was delivered to his home on bay farm island on friday. the officer was at work and his wife opened the package and suffered hearing loss and minor
