This these troops have been collected coats for one warm coat. It started 25 years ago. Ktvu joined the effort 15 years ago. This is a big year for us and them. I want to bring in paige leslie which is the troop leader for one of the troops. You are collecting coats and other things. Yes. Anything that will keep us warm during the winter. Warm hats, mitt eastbounds, sweatshirts and jackets. Definitely. And so they can drop them off at the dropoff locations. We have given more than 70,000 coats to places like st. Vincent, st. Paul, city team ministries. It makes a big difference. When youre collecting the coats, do the girls know it is going to help someone not be cold . Yes. I think were we do a lot of talking about how we can help the community. And these jackets and they will sometimes see the jackets and items be given out to the people who are in need. So were told by a lot of the employees here that the big crowds really came yesterday, thanksgiving day, to, you know, get all of these deals. It relieves my wife from having to make a huge meal for everyone. We just enjoy letting other people do the work. It is about family and friends. So as long as youre together with your family and friends, whether it is at home or out, its all good. The restaurant manager says business on thanksgiving is about double what it is on a typical thursday night. She says for many of the workers it feels like a family dinner, just not with their own family. Many people gave back this thanksgiving, including a bay area teenager and her mother. They host a meal for Homeless People and those down on their luck. A look at an uplifting holiday event. Theyre going to feed you in 20 minutes if youre hungry. It comes before Small Business saturday where people are encouraged to shop Small Businesses. Were happy to be joined to talk more about plaid friday. We came up with the idea of plaid because it represents diversity in the community. Both are diverse Business Owners and the diversity of pro dubs that they bring to the markets at independent businesses. This the ninth year. What is the difference between plaid friday and Small Business saturday . What is the difference, would you say . One of them was intended to be at the same time as black friday. So it was started to compete with the big box mega retailers and provide kind of a nice alternative to that. Small business saturday is the exact same concept but it is a day after so it is not trying to compete with black friday. How can mom and pop stores compete with a Big Box Store offering the same digital camera that gasias camera is going to offer you for 5,550 but big pox has it for 375. What do Small Businesses give you that big box do not. You can leisurely get a cup of coffee. Enjoy tree lined streets that have christmas lights. Great personal service. Yes. More and more people are finding convenience and deals by shopping online. So it definitely is a challenge that your local retailers have to face. So theyre more and more offering the experience of workshops, hot apple sider, Live Entertainment and that Customer Service that people should expect while shopping. Whenever i talk to people who live, work or go to school in oakland, sometimes all three, there is a pride about this city. Right. That not every city claims. Yes. Its been almost a year since the deadly ghost ship warehouse fire in oakland. Now body camera video shows Oakland Police interacting with Derick Almena almost two years before the fire. Body camera video obtained this week by the Bay Area News Group shows police talking with almena about problems with the warehouse, showing that Oakland Police knew people were living there illegally. Al mean aand fellow tenant max harris pleaded not guilty 36 counts of Involuntary Manslaughter in connection to the deadly fire. A preliminary hearing is set for next month to determine if there is enough evidence to go to trial. We continue to follow developing news out of texas after a state trooper was killed in the line of duty. Officers have now captured a suspect in the deadly shooting of that texas state troopers. Officials plan to file murder charges against him. It happened 90 miles south of dallas when allen made a traffic stop. The trooper approached the vehicle and interacted with the driver. And he went back to his patrol unit. The suspect fired multiple rounds from a rifle at the state trooper. The trooper died at the scene. Allen had been with the texas Highway Patrol for 15 years and is survived by a wife and three children. The suspect, black, drove off but was located later in the day more than 100 miles away. The Sheriffs Office says there was gunfire when black was found but theyre not saying who fired first. He is being treated for non lifethreatening injuries. The u. S. Navy called off the search for three sailors in a plane crash. The cargo plane crashed two days ago as it headed to uss Ronald Reagan on wednesday. Eight other people on board have been rescued.
