State history and recovery is going to take a long time, but peak fire season officially ends on monday across many parts of northern california. Certainly relief to have that fire season ending, but firefighters do have some safety advice for people as we head into the winter months. We have the winds coming in from the east, from the north in fairfield, napa reporting a northeast breeze and again that helping to keep that fog out of sight. Right now temperatures starting in the 30s for some, 33 in napa, 34 santa rosa and 38 in novato and if you do have a breeze, thats anywhere from 10 to 15 miles per hour, which it doesnt look that strong out there, but if you do, its going to feel that much colder. Rosemary, thanks. We begin with breaking news in the south bay. Two people dead in an Apartment Fire on east reid and south mine streets, very close to the san jose state campus. Firefighters say they desperately tried to save the lives of two of the victims but could not resuscitate them. A couple of other people rushed to the hospital from the fire. Lee martinez is at that apartment where she talked to a fire captain about what happened overnight lee. Reporter yes, we are staying back from the scene at a out of respect for the victims that are still out here. As you said, we have confirmed that two people are dead, two others who were rescued from the building are in Critical Condition, they were transported to a local hospital. The building is at 10 is that tan two Story Building with a ladder. That was a multiunit apartment, we are told. At around 4 57 this morning firefighters started getting 911 calls coming from the first floor apartment letting them know there was a fire coming from the second floor apartment. We are told that they had to go into rescue mode. When they arrived, they knew four people still trapped inside. One of the captains says that one person was rescued by ladder from the back and the three other victims were rescued off of the balcony. Now, it is undetermined at this time what caused this fire but they say that they had it contained within 45 minutes after arriving on scene and that it is located just in one apartment. Now, they do have an arson investigator out here on scene since they still have not determined the cause just yet. They do believe that the victims are all residents of the second floor apartment. Firefighters say they are going to be out here for probably all day. The police are also out here because of the deaths involved but they said this incident command is probably going to take most of the day today. Back to you guys. And it sounds like that whole unit was involved. Are they doing any evacuations or people being put out of their homes right now as this Investigation Continues . Reporter we didnt get any confirmation on that. All we know is water damage sustained to the other apartments but it was all contained, the fire was all contained in that one apartment. They just dont know where the origin was of the fire in that apartment. Lee martinez having more coming up in half an hour. This morning San Francisco police are it happened yesterday morning about 11 00. Police say officers were on twin peaks conducting an investigation when they saw a suspicious car that may have been casing other vehicles in the area. Police say the driver took off, hit a car and then tried to run over the officer. The officer was not hit but police say it is the latest in a string of incidents that have targeted officers. There have been several instances of officers being injured on the job, especially in recent weeks, we have one officer who was run over on his bicycle and we have another officer who was shot by another individual on halloween night. We also have multiple instances in sfp officers are attempted to be attacked. If you have any information, you are being asked to call the San Francisco police department. Time now 7 06. Bart identified the man on the video yelling racial slurs and slapping a passenger on a train. The confrontation happened on board a train bound for warm springs bart station in fremont. The video was shared on social media and quickly went viral. Bart Police Identified and tracked down the man yesterday. Although the victim declined to press charges, the Transit Agency says it will seek a prohibition order to ban him from riding bart ever again. The city of san jose says its going to crack down on two churches accused of selling marijuana illegally. According to the mercury news, the City Attorney is preparing to take legal action against two dispensaries. Those churches are choe cello Coachella Valley church. Operating as pot clubs under the disguise of a church. Both churches claim they have the right to sell nontaxed marijuana products to its members. The churches could face fines of up to 50,000 a day each day they are open. Two pitbulls are under quarantine in oakland following an attack that left another dog dead and two people injured including a woman that was collecting recyclables. It happened friday morning on the sidewalk in front of the house at 63rd avenue near bancroft. It is a couple of blocks from international boulevard. Witnesses say a 53yearold woman and her dog were being mauled by at least one of the pitbulls. Residents say she is a transient who is in the neighborhood looking for plastic bottles and aluminum cans. 71yearold Ronnie Armstrong says the attack saw the attack, rather, and tried to help but he too was bitten by a dog. Imagine a mummy wrapped up with blood everywhere, thats how it was. And from there, i just went back down the street. I couldnt look at that. Authorities say both armstrong and the woman are hospitalized. Both in stable condition. The owner of the two female pitbulls surrendered them to Animal Services. Neighbors say it got them he got them, rather, after he was robbed and kept them enclosed in the back yard. The injured womans dog was also a pitbull who had a history of biting people. The woman was supposed to turn her dog over to Animal Services on thursday but failed to do so. Happening today, its being called a nongarage sale across the city of santa rosa. Residents have come up with a unique way to help those who lost all of their belongings in the north bay wildfires. Ktvus Deborah Villalon talked to the organizer of this giveaway who is helping the fire victims on their road to recovery. We all have 100 wine glasses or coffee cups. Reporter in diane madeiras house nothing is safe. A couple of glass bowls. Reporter she is on a hunt for things she can spare and someone with nothing can use. Childrens books. Reporter saturday it all goes to her front yard, where she will put out a sign for her nongarage sale, no prices, everything free. I hope people pick it up because my idea was to cleanse my house and share with others. Reporter other households have picked it up and will also host giveaways saturday, most of them in madeiras Junior College neighborhood but a list of participants show so far at least 60 different streets and hundreds of houses spread across santa rosa. This is winter. This is devastation. Reporter hearing the past month from those who lost everything has left a powerful impression. This is the only home my daughter knows. We lived here 18 years. Reporter insurance helps many. I started going, what do we really need . My rafters had been full. Reporter but madeira knows not everyone had it and, besides, nothing beats free. I just said im getting rid of everything but what i use from now on. Reporter from carpeting to coffee pots, its going on the driveway. Some of this dianes, some donations people dropped off. Toys, legos. Reporter this assortment came from strangers who found her house, one woman driving from lafayette with a carload. We will try to make sure it is the fire survivors that are getting the things. Reporter madeira isnt worried about people who arent from the fire, helping themselves. But you can kind of tell the fire survivors in santa rosa. Theres definitely a sadness to them. Reporter she hopes everyone comes away with more than material items. Everybody has their story still, you know, and we want to be able to talk to the people also and hug them. Reporter knowing it will take time for people to get reestablished and replace their belongings, madeira plans another garage nonsale in the spring. A rural road in the east bay that was shut down last winter finally reopens today. A stretch of Morgan Territory road in the clayton area washed away during a landslide back in february with all the rain and has been closed ever since for repairs. The two lane road connects major road in and out of the city of clayton. The contractor completed a final paving this week along with reinforcing the road with a new retaining wall set to reopen no later than 5 00 this afternoon. Peak fire season ends monday across many parts of northern california. Cal fire is going to continue to have crews on standby as a precaution. It has been one of the deadliest fire seasons in state history. But recent rain and cooler temperatures are reducing the threat. Officials are calling an end to the peak fire season in alameda, contra costa and Santa Clara County along with parts of san joaquin and stanislaus counties. They are testing smoke alarms and Carbon Monoxide alerts and clean the stoves as well. I had to put on a down coat to climb into the car today.
