>> a huge problem. it shows up after disasters. amy bach is the director of policyholders - - and nonprofit that surveyed the terms of several major medical disasters. we obtained the data in 2015, lake county valley fair 52% of fire victims told volunteers their homes were underinsured. in amador county butte fire, 65 %. in the sun but - - san bruno explosion, 50% and in doubt wildfires, united policyholders says 66% of the dems reported their insurance policy did not cover the full cost of replacing the house. >> fox says she put a lot of that responsibility on insurers. >> they know how much it cost to put homes back. >> do you think they are being deceptive? >> absolutely. they use words like replacement value, put you back where you were in their advertising. and then the fine print in their policies are written by lawyers say something else. in november, the organization cohosted a home insurance workshop in santa rosa where church pews and isles overflowed with north fate - - north bay fire victims. overwhelmed and confused. you think you are underinsured ? >> there's a good possibility we are underinsured. >> i feel i may be underinsured.>> do you expect a significant number of underinsured victims coming out of the north bay fires question mark >> too early to say. >> david jones who in october announced insured losses from the wind country fires topped $3.3 billion. the industry sued him after he adopted regulations requiring insurers to provide complete estimates to homeowners wondering how much it cost to replace their homes. >> insurers were leading out the portion of the estimates and giving people a lower replacement cost estimates and people had less insurance they needed. why do companies do that? one possibility is they want to make a sale. >> they don't know they are underinsured. the only time it comes out is one everything dawns and everything but the pilot - - you need every dollar. like this victim, where some 5000 homes stood, now leveled. to get answers, we went to sacramento to speak with the association of california insurance companies. the same association that sued commissioner jones. >> why should the public trust the companies if they sued the commissioner for the regulations? >> the lawsuit is about the  authority.>> there are strong critics who say the insurance advertisements are deceptive.>> insurers are trying to sell a product they prepare for this. they have written policies and they are going to make good on the policies they have written with their customers. >> to make sure victims are not victimized again, fox said that groups like hers will be watching. >> i am fully expecting to see the wild fire survivors have the same under insurance statistics as we saw after the san diego fires and the - - oakland fires. >> candace joins us live in the studio. how much? by 5%, 25% is there a dollar figure? >> an average of past disasters has been in the hundreds of thousands. it depends on how much your house goes. average 800 $900,000 house, 1 to 200 average 800 $900,000 house, one to $200,000. the big question is how do i know if my home is underinsured, it takes math but it's easy, take how much your home is insured for, square footage divide that to find how much you are insured per square foot, if it's less than $200, there's a good chance you are underinsured and we have that equation on our website. pretty easy. >> insurance companies are not in business to give out money without having you jump through some hoops, are they going to raise the bar and make these people jump through more hoops? >> right now they are telling me that they are working together to help expedite the process. insurance represent going on site and expediting process through the commissioner and there's a lot of talk and we want to see action. the reason why we're talking - - they say all these things and are you really doing that and we are watching for the moment. >> i am rooting to all the folks who lost their homes. they have been going from place to place trying to get back on their feet and to have a prolonged discussion about insurance and negotiation, that can be exhausting. is there a sense of people taking what they can and suddenly and prepared to fight? >> right now the biggest suggestion and piece of advice don't make a rash decision, either which way you may think i don't want to rebuild it's too painful and then months go along and you see your neighbors rebuild and see plans a goal growing back and it's thinking about a - - coming itself - - feeling emotions and making decisions when calm and mentally - - a >> it's not a good thing. - - maybe not in this magnitude maybe there will be at home, isn't it ultimately up to me to sit down with the agent and have an open dialogue and talking about replacement costs and how much, i'm i going to get a rebuild cost or part of it ? >> it comes down to the policyholder. you decide how much you want to pay a month. be forthcoming. be proactive, ask questions. what we found is that insurance companies all responsible to give you a fair and thorough accurate asked - - estimate. they don't know how much it cost to replace a home. put it in writing. i don't know how much in labor or - - they do. they give you that estimate and you are in charge whether you want to go with it. >> what about the small print in the policies that could put a stall in the process. >> the small print, if you go over it and you are overwhelmed, get a second opinion. if you don't understand, he should do his best job to explain it and go through the fine print. what if the fine print is overlooked? >> my friend in fourth grade said she was sexually assaulted i was 9 years old and he was shocking to hear. i knew that what happened was wrong and i went to - - and reported the incident to the police and it has taken me on this journey to discover my purpose and to become an advocate against sexual assault. >> you think we are doing ourselves the service women and in this country speaking about - - strangers in the bushes and more often than not it is someone we know.>> is women, we need to unite to use our voices to speak out about these instances and together we can make a difference. >> how do you empower the young women who are younger than you are who might be afraid to speak up because it's the most popular guy on campus. it's the uncle everyone loves in the family, what can you say to them to be strong >> you have a voice and you are absolutely allowed to use it. if something happens, you are not at fault. there's a support team around you. use your voice and you will get the help you win need. >> work that you are doing, are young girls and boys coming to you with stories? pretty good, fog in the morning, afternoon widespread 60s and mostly sunny, sunday evening cloud again, heatwave wants to move through and showers monday morning. that is in the end of sunday and the entire weekend looks good. for some headlines we have been working on, let's go to dave clark. >> here are some stories, police are searching for seven teenage boys in campbell accused of breaking into homes. surveillance video from october 30 shows teenagers an l patio court going down the street right after two homes were burglarized. the video is from security cameras from several homes in the area. take a look, if you recognize or have any information about the teenagers seen in the video , call campbell police. no charges were - - charges were filed after a high school student was shot and killed on monday. 20-year-old christian who seita of concord was charged with murder for the killing of lawrence janssen near olympic high school. no charges were filed against the second suspect, 18-year-old brian - - he was accused of hiding the gun. three juveniles were also detained. police saying janssen was targeted by the suspects but there's no word yet on the motive. california regulators say drivers of uber and lyft don't have to be fingerprinted before they are eligible to drive. they rejected the push by the taxi industry calling for tougher background checks on rideshare drivers. a spokesman for the taxi, limousine and paratransit called the decision a mistake. san francisco taxi drivers have to be fingerprinted. those fingerprints are checked by law enforcement before the cabdrivers can start driving. those are some of the morning headlines. john preston is a marine veteran making a name for himself in the music industry. the latest single is called before i'm gone. it tells the story of a female veteran battling ptsd. >> ♪ i'm helpless i'm screaming no one can hear what i say ♪ >> proceeds of the music and if it's a stop soldier suicide, john joins us live. welcome back. great to have you. you have been busy. >> very busy. >> is powerful to see. according to the va, women vets are more at risk double number of suicide. >> why are you focusing on female vets? >> thank you for finally talking about us. >> is there a reason - - did they have the same reason of not speaking up as men do question mark >> you are trying to keep your mouth shut. >> you need to be strong and get it together and i can do this.>> we want to highlight it and highlighting veterans suicide in general. 22 a day is way too many. i want to say a different number. i want that to happen. that's why we are releasing the way we are and doing the work they are doing. we charted the single, we are in the charts in the european radio. we are working this to get it to the entire world. is there something you wish those of us who did not serve would understand and we don't get? will add that there's the m forces medley, when you hear it played, they asked members of each branch of the military to stand up. sometimes you see men and women in uniform stand up and you see people dressed like you and me and they stand up when you realize that veterans are everywhere. we say thank you to them. we should do it every day not just on veterans day. i'm excited about our interview later with john preston firefighter who has become a musician, he is a vet and all his work that he does to raise awareness and action. we will talk to him about women and female vets who are taking their own lives after coming home from overseas and battling - - >> i believe we are going to a barbecue where they are giving away free food to veterans. >> good things happening in south city and all around the bay area. great things in san francisco last night where 40,000 people packed at&t park to see the band together bay area concert supporting victims of the north bay fires. work together to help people out and i am grateful to be in this great place in this state. that's dave matthews, he was one of the big names who performed. organizers say 100% of proceeds will go to our relief fund. $15 million raised through ticket sales and sponsors. to get out of town and have a nice nice - - night out and enjoy the family. recognition is difficult at times. something like this is amazing. we are happy they are doing something. it honors first responders and fire survivors. 6500 receive complimentary tickets. five hour show that ended with a bay area band metallica. buldozers starting to clear - - in sonoma and napa where homes once stood. the second phase launched in santa rosa neighborhood, the epa wrapped up most of its work of removing hazardous waste and heavy equipment starting to move in. a spokesman says soil samples will be tested for contaminants. such as asbestos and the agency is sampling the air and water runoff. following the fire in san diego county, insurance companies were accused of - - lowballing policyholders. candace you nguyen looked into the problems who are plaguing fire victims. in an instant, thousands of north bay residents lost their homes.>> the hardest thing to process and what will be a longer and painful process, some will learn in a way and they will lose of them again. underinsured, is that a problem? >> a huge problem. it shows up after disasters. amy bach is the director of policyholders - - and nonprofit that surveyed the terms of several major medical disasters. we obtained the data in 2015, lake county valley fair 52% of fire victims told volunteers their homes were underinsured. in amador county butte fire, 65 %. in the sun but - - san bruno explosion, 50% and in doubt wildfires, united policyholders says 66% of the dems reported their insurance policy did not cover the full cost of replacing the house. >> fox says she put a lot of that responsibility on insurers. >> they know how much it cost to put homes back. >> do you think they are being deceptive? >> absolutely. they use words like replacement value, put you back where you were in their advertising. and then the fine print in their policies are written by lawyers say something else. in november, the organization cohosted a home insurance workshop in santa rosa where church pews and isles overflowed with north fate - - north bay fire victims. overwhelmed and confused. you think you are underinsured ? >> there's a good possibility we are underinsured. >> i feel i may be underinsured.>> do you expect a significant number of underinsured victims coming out of the north bay fires question mark >> too early to say. >> david jones who in october announced insured losses from the wind country fires topped $3.3 billion. the industry sued him after he adopted regulations requiring insurers to provide complete estimates to homeowners wondering how much it cost to replace their homes. >> insurers were leading out the portion of the estimates and giving people a lower replacement cost estimates and people had less insurance they needed. why do companies do that? one possibility is they want to make a sale. >> they don't know they are underinsured. the only time it comes out is one everything dawns and everything but the pilot - - you need every dollar. like this victim, where some 5000 homes stood, now leveled. to get answers, we went to sacramento to speak with the association of california insurance companies. the same association that sued commissioner jones. >> why should the public trust the companies if they sued the commissioner for the regulations? >> the lawsuit is about the  authority.>> there are strong critics who say the insurance advertisements are deceptive.>> insurers are trying to sell a product they prepare for this. they have written policies and they are going to make good on the policies they have written with their customers. >> to make sure victims are not victimized again, fox said that groups like hers will be watching. >> i am fully expecting to see the wild fire survivors have the same under insurance statistics as we saw after the san diego fires and the - - oakland fires. >> candace joins us live in the studio. how much? by 5%, 25% is there a dollar figure? >> an average of past disasters has been in the hundreds of thousands. it depends on how much your house goes. average 800 $900,000 house, 1 to 200 average 800 $900,000 house, one to $200,000. the big question is how do i know if my home is underinsured, it takes math but it's easy, take how much your home is insured for, square footage divide that to find how much you are insured per square foot, if it's less than $200, there's a good chance you are underinsured and we have that equation on our website. pretty easy. >> insurance companies are not in business to give out money without having you jump through some hoops, are they going to raise the bar and make these people jump through more hoops? >> right now they are telling me that they are working together to help expedite the process. insurance represent going on site and expediting process through the commissioner and there's a lot of talk and we want to see action. the reason why we're talking - - they say all these things and are you really doing that and we are watching for the moment. >> i am rooting to all the folks who lost their homes. they have been going from place to place trying to get back on their feet and to have a prolonged discussion about insurance and negotiation, that can be exhausting. is there a sense of people taking what they can and suddenly and prepared to fight? >> right now the biggest suggestion and piece of advice don't make a rash decision, either which way you may think i don't want to rebuild it's too painful and then months go along and you see your neighbors rebuild and see plans a goal growing back and it's thinking about a - - coming itself - - feeling emotions and making decisions when calm and mentally - - a >> it's not a good thing. - - maybe not in this magnitude maybe there will be at home, isn't it ultimately up to me to sit down with the agent and have an open dialogue and talking about replacement costs and how much, i'm i going to get a rebuild cost or part of it ? >> it comes down to the policyholder. you decide how much you want to pay a month. be forthcoming. be proactive, ask questions. what we found is that insurance companies all responsible to give you a fair and thorough accurate asked - - estimate. they don't know how much it cost to replace a home. put it in writing. i don't know how much in labor or - - they do. they give you that estimate and you are in charge whether you want to go with it. >> what about the small print in the policies that could put a stall in the process. >> the small print, if you go over it and you are overwhelmed, get a second opinion. if you don't understand, he should do his best job to explain it and go through the fine print. what if the fine print is overlooked? i'm tom steyer, and like you, i'm a citizen who knows it's up to us to do something. it's why i'm funding this effort to raise our voices together and demand that elected officials take a stand on impeachment. a republican congress once impeached a president for far less. yet today people in congress and his own administration know that this president is a clear and present danger who's mentally unstable and armed with nuclear weapons. and they do nothing. join us and tell your member of congress that they have a moral responsibility to stop doing what's political and start doing what's right. our country depends on it. she's a high school senior who recently developed and produce a psa about sexual assault and consent. there's only one way to get it. it's not taken. you can't buy it. it has to be given. consent. learning how to ask for it. this psa led to a meeting with the peer to peer counsel about developing a curriculum for students dealing with these very difficult issues happy to join us this morning, thanks for being here. this is a very delicate topic even for some adults. how did you choose to take this on. >> because i think consent need to be incorporated to education classes. it's a sensitive and provocative topic but something that needs to be taught. the students - - >> tell me what you learned >> in my education class, what i learned about his sexual assault. i remember - - i don't remember what consent, what it means, like - - so it's important that students learn what it is and what it isn't. what it means to give and accept consent. >> you think adults are reluctant to talk about teenagers giving consent because adults prefer that they don't engage in sexual acts, that's why we are afraid to tell you how to say yes, i just wanted to say no. >> consent is critical in anything. and parents need to be engaged and open to having these provocative topics with their students so they can be safe in life. >> had a friend come to you about a disturbing story and you took it to the police. how were you the advocate when she had no other? >> my friend in fourth grade said she was sexually assaulted i was 9 years old and he was shocking to hear. i knew that what happened was wrong and i went to - - and reported the incident to the police and it has taken me on this journey to discover my purpose and to become an advocate against sexual assault. >> you think we are doing ourselves the service women and in this country speaking about - - strangers in the bushes and more often than not it is someone we know.>> is women, we need to unite to use our voices to speak out about these instances and together we can make a difference. >> how do you empower the young women who are younger than you are who might be afraid to speak up because it's the most popular guy on campus. it's the uncle everyone loves in the family, what can you say to them to be strong >> you have a voice and you are absolutely allowed to use it. if something happens, you are not at fault. there's a support team around you. use your voice and you will get the help you win need. >> work that you are doing, are young girls and boys coming to you with stories? pretty good, fog in the morning, afternoon widespread 60s and mostly sunny, sunday evening cloud again, heatwave wants to move through and showers monday morning. that is in the end of sunday and the entire weekend looks good. for some headlines we have been working on, let's go to dave clark. >> here are some stories, police are searching for seven teenage boys in campbell accused of breaking into homes. surveillance video from october 30 shows teenagers an l patio court going down the street right after two homes were burglarized. the video is from security cameras from several homes in the area. take a look, if you recognize or have any information about the teenagers seen in the video , call campbell police. no charges were - - charges were filed after a high school student was shot and killed on monday. 20-year-old christian who seita of concord was charged with murder for the killing of lawrence janssen near olympic high school. no charges were filed against the second suspect, 18-year-old brian - - he was accused of hiding the gun. three juveniles were also detained. police saying janssen was targeted by the suspects but there's no word yet on the motive. california regulators say drivers of uber and lyft don't have to be fingerprinted before they are eligible to drive. they rejected the push by the taxi industry calling for tougher background checks on rideshare drivers. a spokesman for the taxi, limousine and paratransit called the decision a mistake. san francisco taxi drivers have to be fingerprinted. those fingerprints are checked by law enforcement before the cabdrivers can start driving. those are some of the morning headlines. john preston is a marine veteran making a name for himself in the music industry. the latest single is called before i'm gone. it tells the story of a female veteran battling ptsd. >> ♪ i'm helpless i'm screaming no one can hear what i say ♪ >> proceeds of the music and if it's a stop soldier suicide, john joins us live. welcome back. great to have you. you have been busy. >> very busy. >> is powerful to see. according to the va, women vets are more at risk double number of suicide. >> why are you focusing on female vets? >> the song is written about my personal battle. after losing my brother to us - - to suicide, things change quite tremendously for me. we wanted to include female veterans into it. when we looked at the statistics, - - we had to do something about it. it's unbelievable to see that - - what are they saying? >> thank you for finally talking about us. >> is there a reason - - did they have the same reason of not speaking up as men do question mark >> you are trying to keep your mouth shut. >> you need to be strong and get it together and i can do this.>> we want to highlight it and highlighting veterans suicide in general. 22 a day is way too many. i want to say a different number. i want that to happen. that's why we are releasing the way we are and doing the work they are doing. we charted the single, we are in the charts in the european radio. we are working this to get it to the entire world. is there something you wish those of us who did not serve would understand and we don't get? >> no. on the family side of things is the hardest part because we don't know what's wrong and we don't understand what they're going through and we don't want to speak about it. it took me years to realize was - - what i was going through. we want to bring change and want people to say hey we understand we are here. we put a video out that is a veterans day message from some huge people in the community, they have a movie coming out this weekend. these guys are talking about it. we want the community to hear it and say life - - is not better without you. >> when vietnam wars war was over, they came back and they - - here we are and you think we made enough progress question mark >> no. until the number changes absolutely not. every making progress, yes. we're doing what we need to do. there are guys in the community reaching the entire world. that's our plan. >> you are not done with awareness, but you are putting it on the side, you are tired of it because you are talking about numbers you are here to save lives. other people can do the awareness thing in my music and i am here to save lives.>> i get messages - - i heard your son and i did not take my life today. i get on the phone with people message me that. i want to talk to them. we run our messages as much as possible to be in touch and help individual people. >> when you write the song is it therapy for you question mark >> very. >> is it difficult? >> i have never gone through therapy a ham so for now - - i am sober now. and i tell veterans, sobriety. know who you really are, don't put it behind bottles and pills.>> you see that in the video. >> i am feeding each thing including the loaded gun. >> we need you are struggling from ptsd, did anybody say, you are not the john i know, is there anything i can do, did anybody reach out to you? >> it's who i became. >> did it make you defensive? >> why did you not reach out to hold a hand? >> i did not know i had a problem. i was telling everyone else to fix yourself. >> i'm okay i got this. i am good i can handle it, but you need to fix yours. allied of my life - - a lot in my life happen. i lost my brother and my father.>> would you do it again knowing where you are today?
