Chp was on scene, they just now towed the two pickup trucks that were involved out of the area and it is a reminder to take it easy out there this morning. Meanwhile, chp also investigating that overnight fatal collision, that fatal crash. At this point chp has not confirmed rain was a factor in that crash either. Here are the details on that. A big rig crashed here after 10 00 last night on highway 101 just north of san pedro road. The chp says the big rig slammed into the Center Divide and then caught fire. Chp reported that fire was coming from the front and rear of that big rig, by 10 35 a sigalert had been issued because all northbound lanes were blocked along with three southbound lanes. Now, at this point no word on the identity of the person who was killed in that crash. That sigalert cancelled at 3 30 as all lanes of 101 were reopened. Now, we are hearing that a caltrans crew is expected out here between 7 00 and 9 30 this morning to begin repair work on that Center Divide. By that time it should be light out so should get a better idea of how much damage was left by that fatal big rig crash. Meanwhile all of this last night fatal crash and this mornings new crash that we witnessed, a warning to drivers out there that roads are slick, they are wet, take it slow and be careful on this mornings commute. Back to you. Christien, while we have you here, is it raining where you are right now . Reporter yeah, no, dave, its not raining right now, we do have wet roads here and we have had some light rain off and on, but no downpours and, again, right now its not raining but check with mark tamayo, you know its going to be spotty, the rain is going to be hit and miss depending on where you are so you cant depend on dry roads if you are driving in this morning. Just anticipate that the roads are going to be wet and build a little extra time into your morning commute. Yeah, thank you, christien. We are going to check in with mark right now. Yep. I was driving in from marin county this morning and it was fine, intermittent and all of a sudden, boom, i was hit by a cell so thats the dangerous part. And thats probably the perfect way to put it, yeah, you think youre outside, youre in the clear and all of a sudden things develop rapidly and youre in a sudden downpour. We have been noticing that happening this morning, especially in portions of the east bay over the past hour or so but the main front that produced the rainfall last night into early this morning is moving out to the east and theres not a lot of coverage up in the north bay there, you can pick out some development closer to novato and then moving the maps closer to the east bay, so looks like right around san ramon out toward lafayette and concord and hercules as well so these areas we have noticed an increase in the rainfall rates over the past hour or so. At least an increase in some of the coverage closer to the walnut creek and concord. So wet roadways for this portion of the bay area. As we move the maps closer to san mateo, looks like the main action right now is actually moved a little bit to the south closer to belmont, a few showers around palo alto and then in the south bay san jose reporting some light rain about an hour ago, right now you can see the coverage closer to morgan hill and gilroy. Current numbers are in the 50s to right around 60 degrees and the rainfall pretty impressive amounts of this system, especially for the coastal hills, that was advertised, ben lomond in the Santa Cruz Mountains over 2 inches of rain, venado over 3 inches of rainfall and some more reports for you, santa rosa over an inch, napa. 80, san rafael just over three quarters inch and San Francisco two tenths of an inch but we are adding to these totals right now, especially in portions of the east bay. Now, heres the deal for this morning, mostly cloudy skies, some showers could be quickly rolling through your neighborhood, and then this afternoon we begin to scale back on the chance but still a chance of a shower this afternoon. Forecast highs will be in the 60s later on today by about 4 00. We will check in with sal right now, of course, weather and traffic always linked but especially this morning, some wet roadways out there. Good morning to you, sal. Good morning to you, mark. Lets talk about marin county, you just heard christien talking about it and now that that crash is cleared, the traffic on southbound 101 is Getting Better and by the way, in case youre wondering, where is christien . Hes around there, off camera view, thats where his crew is looking at southbound 101, they are going to be checking out the commute there because of some earlier issues we had on 101 as you heard him say. This is a look at the macarthur maze across the bay and you can see traffic is already slowing coming around the corner, a little bit more of a delay on this wet thursday. You can see traffic is going to be slow as well at the bay bridge toll plaza. Once you get to the city, its fine. Look at highway 4 where our road sensors are showing traffic. 6 05. Go back to the desk. Thank you, sal. The latest rain created the possibility of new problems for people who were burned out of their homes in napa and sonoma counties. The concern is over mudslides and toxic ash from higher elevations. It could end up on property that was just cleaned up but one Business Owner sees this as a chance to help this community by offering the supplied barriers that can help keep the ground in place and also absorb toxins. Nobody else is doing this. I cant believe it. But we just wanted to protect our property and make sure everything is okay. This keeps us busy and i even told some of our neighbors today if they start to feel down and a little bit depressed, come up here and drag wattels for a while and you will forget about it. The waddles are being created in the neighborhood where they need it. The Company Owner says he knows how important this can be because he lost his house in the fires. We have lived here for five years, we didnt meet many of our neighbors. Guess what . I have met most of them now and its great. And this will make the Community Even stronger, which is really what its all about. Now he says although hes a fire victim himself, he is also grateful for people hes never met. He was surprised to find while his house was burning, fire crews managed to pull a few things including artwork, some wine and even a ring that belonged to his late mother out of the flames. Wow. Wow. Thats really nice. Yeah. Time 6 07. Well, tonight some big names in music will be performing lending their talents for a benefit concert right here in the bay area. Yeah. The senate bill will reportedly include seven tax brackets instead of the four that are in the house bill. Another difference in the senate bill, it would eliminate instead of just limit the deduction for state and local taxes. Democrats say thats something that will not go over well with suburban voters. So we say to our republican friends on this tax bill, as Clint Eastwood said, you want to pass this tax bill, you want to hurt the suburbs, make our day. We can cut taxes for people in a way they feel it, if we can repair broken Healthcare System that does a better job taking care of people, then we will get rewarded. Political analysts say since there are no Republican Senate seats in areas where the state and local Tax Deduction is popular, like california and new york, republicans are not worried about voter backlash for eliminating that deduction. Time is now 6 11. The trial against the man accused of killing kate steinle continues. Coming up in minutes, what a weapons expert said about the shooting and the possibility that it was an accident. Attorneys representing jose sa raitt, the man zarate, the man accused of killing kate stine lay in San Francisco say they will not call him to the witness stand. The defense expects to wrap up its case today with closing arguments scheduled for monday. The defense claims the Fatal Shooting of kate steinle in 2015 was an accident. The lawyers called a weapons expert who served 33 years with the Royal Canadian mounted police. He told the jury because Garcia Zarate did not have weapons training, did not have a motive to kill kate steinle and there was only a single gunshot and a ricochet, the shooting was most likely unintentional. Under the law an accident is a complete defense to a criminal charge and so if there is reasonable doubt that a crime was committed, that this was accidental, that he would be acquitted on all charges. Now, the defense argues Police Interrogators coerced zarate to confess to things that were not true like saying he was only 5 feet away from steinle when he gun went off. The video shows him being much further away. Prosecutors say he pointed the gun towards steinle, pulled the trigger and then threw the gun into the water later. They argue these actions were intentional. 16 minutes after 6 00. Lets check in with sal. What are you keeping an eye on, sal . Its getting busy out there and i think the wet weather is going to make it a little bit more crowded, people getting on the road a little earlier. I think you should too even though its not raining in most areas. You have heard mark tamayo say you could hit some cells and it could slow you down. Go out to the macarthur maze and show you westbound 80 coming around the corner, this is a pretty big delay already, the metering lights went on just about half an hour to 45 minutes ago and you can see traffic is already slow at the bay bridge toll plaza, you will see slow traffic as well, this morning as you get onto the bridge. Nothing unusual there as you can see traffic looks good. This is a look at highway 4 westbound, you can see some slowing here as you drive through. Highway 4 is slow, so is 680 which is a little bit slower than usual for this early hour but its going to get there anyway. 80 westbound we saw slow. San mateo bridge is already slow getting onto the span, dunbarton bridge, still have an opportunity to get on it before we have major slowing. 6 17. Lets bring mark tamayo in for steve. Good morning to you. Still tracking scattered rain across portions of the bay area, so we had the main system move in last night into early this morning. That is now scooting out, out to the east, in fact, out toward the sierra, falling in the form of rainfall out towards South Lake Tahoe so snow levels there up above 8000 feet. Here we have more dedevelopment of showers behind redevelopment of showers behind the main system. Right around novato, around 37, looks like we have scattered showers here popping up to the 6 00 hour, so some downpours closer to sears point and then moving the maps closer to the east bay, the coverage beginning to back off a little bit but still out towards san ramon, out towards concord as well we have this one cell popping up for this portion of the area, closer to, as you can pick out just outside to the east of 680, and then moving the maps around oakland and berkeley, not as much coverage here, and then down toward the peninsula we have a few scattered showers redeveloping closer to san mateo and then in the south bay for san jose reporting mostly cloudy skies, looks like we have some showers in the Santa Cruz Mountains and closer to 101 right around morgan hill, some wet roadways there so keep that in mind. Current numbers are in the 50s to the 60s, towards San Francisco, mild, checking in 60 degrees, santa rosa 53, take a look at at some of the look at some of the rainfall totals, Santa Cruz Mountains over 2 inches for the Sonoma County hills over 3 inches of rainfall. We will show you some more totals for santa rosa at the airport just over an inch of rain, napa. 80, san rafael over three quarters inch and theres walnut creek at. 43. San francisco and redwood city close to point 20 and san jose, only two hundredths of an inch at the airport. The focus of the rainfall with this system as anticipated was up in the north bay, guerneville and healdsburg around 1. 60 and sebastopol 1. 38. A lot more than just a few sprinkles. We had the downpours yesterday. Today we have scattered showers primarily for the Morning Hours, we still have to hold onto a chance for this afternoon and then friday another system kind of moves in, that will kind of increase or boot the chances once again first thing friday. Friday morning. Out toward at t park for this evening, for band together bay area we are expecting mostly cloudy skies, we cannot rule out the chance of an isolated shower and temperatures will be close to 60 degrees and im thinking the bulk of the shower activity will be before that time frame, especially for this morning. So here we are this morning, 9 00, youre not seeing a lot of coverage here but still a chance of an isolated shower throughout the day for your thursday and then look what happens into your friday. Some more Development First thing friday morning so this could be a factor once again for the friday morning commute and then later in the day friday we should have partly cloudy skies. Forecast highs for today, mainly in the 60s with a chance of showers, keep the umbrella closeby. And then saturday starts out dry, sunday another chance of rain showers, especially by sunday afternoon up in the north bay. So on again, off again rainfall. I know i have made the mistake of going outside thinking its going to be okay to go for a five minute walk and all of a sudden a
