baptist church in sutherland springs. the gunman threat text messages to his mother-in-law and his mother in law attended the church. she was not a there yesterday when the gunman walked in with an assault rifle and started shooting people. 26 people died and 20 others were injured. 10 of them are in critical condition. fewer than 500 lived there in sutherland springs. almost all of them say they cannot believe what happened. >> there are no words. this happened in new york or any big city. >>.com the sheriff says the gunman walked down the aisle of the church and left no way for people to escape. a man nearby heard the gunfire grabbed his own rifle and began to shoot at the attacker. the attacker dropped his rifle jumped in a car and drove away. the man flagged down another man in a pickup truck and they chased the attacker. the attacker ended up crashing his own car. he was found dead inside. it does appear the gunman shot and killed himself. >> the two men are being called heroes. the driver says he went on automatic pilot when he heard. >> we just take pursuit. we sped through traffic and we hit about 95 miles per hour trying to catch him. until he eventually lost control and went into the ditch.. he heard some of people and affected so many people's lives. why wouldn't you want to take him down?>> the driver says he was on the phone with police throughout the chase that lasted 10 minutes. they help police find him when the vehicle overturned. president trump is in asia this week and he reacted to the news offering his deepest condolences. >> this act of evil occurred as the victims and their families were in their place of sacred worship. we cannot put into words the pain and grief that we all feel and we cannot begin to imagine the suffering of those who lost the ones they so dearly loved. >> the president said his thoughts and prayers are with the victims and the families and once again america must stand strong. former president obama expressing condolences and calling for change. on twitter he says we grieve with all the families and will stand with the survivors as they recover. he says may god grant all of us the wisdom to ask what steps we can take to reduce violence. >> after the shooting many democrats are calling for more gun reform. nancy pelosi released a statement that says as we mourn the lives that were cut short we must respond not only with prayer and unwavering love but with action. she says much more needs to be done to ensure no other families are forced to endure such unimaginable tragedy.>> caroline shively live from sutherland springs with more on what we are learning about the gunman.>> reporter: some important information coming out at a news conference that is just wrapping up. devin kelley the suspect in this case called his father from his cell phone as he was being pursued to tell them -- him he had been shot. minutes later he shot himself ending the life -- chase and his life. there were three guns found in the case, a nine millimeter, a ruger and a rifle. as for the motive, they do not have a motive yet but refer to this as a domestic situation going on with the family. the suspects mother-in-law attended the first baptist church. >> parishioners at first baptist are in disbelief. one day after devin kelley opened fire in the middle of sunday services. the sheriff says he is trying to figure out what caused kelley to do this. nobody was targeted it appeared he was firing randomly. >> he went in there and he was shooting on the way in and out.>> kelley was confronted on his way out by an armed civilian. he was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. officials believe his in-laws attended the church. >> i don't think the church was randomly attacked. there was a reason why the shooter chose this church. >> kelley received a bad conduct discharge from the air force after assaulting his wife and child. president trump says kelley was deranged and no gun control could have prevented this. >> we have a lot of mental health problems in our country but this is not a guns situation. >> reporter: police confirmed that kelley was able to purchase these guns but in general a dishonorable discharge would generally preclude you from allowing you to purchase a firearm. those are some of the things they will be looking into. there are plenty of questions happening currently more than 24 hours after the shooting. back to you. >> i want to ask, there are reports the gunman was wearing body armor. did they say anything about that? >> reporter: last night they said he was in tactical gear but they did not go into specifics. i think one of the interesting parts is that this man who heard the gunshots grabbed his own gun and ran there he had nothing but one gun. he was taken on by a man with no gear. he was being called a hero today. him and another man who chased him down. >> caroline shively, thank you. now to the question of the day, do you think stronger gun control laws could stop mass shootings? 61% say yes, 39% say no. many comments on this. ernie chavez says nothing will change the extreme but it could reduce the number of attacks. >> pamela riddle says no. we need better education on mental illness. >> alicia roberts says nothing can completely end mass shootings but the statistics are not acceptable. >> we will check more responses coming up at 9:30. just use our hashtag to reach us. authorities are searching for guns and ammunition and other law enforcement equipment in the bay area which were stolen from a car in san francisco on friday. >> alex savidge is live from redwood city with more on the investigation. >> reporter: good morning, a spokesman for the sheriff's office told me this theft is very concerning to the department. they are hoping these weapons are recovered soon. the sergeant at the center of the investigation works for the fbi joint terrorism task force. he was attending a meeting in san francisco on friday, when he returned to his car he found someone had broken in and stolen two a guns, ammunition and his fbi jacket. >> there is a shotgun, 12gauge pump action. the second firearm is a cold ar 4. there were also 20 rounds of ammunition stolen. >> reporter: you can hear the police officer describing the stolen guns. this is part of a radio call from the break in which happened at 10:00 friday night on jones street. a 12gauge shotgun and rifle were stolen along with quite a bit of ammunition. also taken was a bulletproof vest and fbi jacket. the san mateo county sheriff's sergeant immediately reported the theft to police and to his superiors. we were told this was not the sergeant's personal car. it is unclear if the guns had been secured in the car which is required by department rules. guns stolen from law enforcement has been a recurring problem in the bay area. we have seen this happen a number of times. member the gun used to kill kate steinle in san francisco had been stolen from the vehicle of a bureau of land management agent. >> it is likely too early to hear if the deputy might face disciplinary action for what happened? >> reporter: nobody has said what the consequences might be for the deputy. obviously we need the facts to play out and figure out what took place, if the weapons were secured in the car or if he was following protocol when he parked his car and left the guns inside. we will wait and see if he followed particle and then find out the consequences.>> thank you, alex savidge. the case will be presented to the jury today. on thursday prosecutors rested their case. they argued the immigrant josi garcias zarate intentionally fired a shot that it kate steinle two years ago near the waterfront. the defense maintains the bullet ricocheted and the shooting was an accident. in this case, the gun used by garcias zarate had been stolen from the personal car of a blm ranger. >> in response to the killing a law was passed in california requiring gun owners to leave firearms in their vehicles to lock them in a safe box or in a trunk. the law took effect in january. coming up, continuing coverage up for the program between now and november 13. the county will help remove hazardous waste from some properties that are destroyed or damaged in the wildfires. homeowners can learn more during a meeting that begins at 6:00 tonight at santa rosa veterans memorial building. another program to help wildfire victims is getting underway in sonoma county. teams of appraisers will be sent to expect -- inspect homes damaged in the fire. fema will provide temporary homes for north bay fire victims at the sonoma county fairgrounds. the board of supervisors approves the lease of 80 recreational buildings for fema housing. 120 more spaces will be developed and at least. people will build to stay in the transitional housing for at least the next 18 months. anyone interested in applying should go to the local assistance center in santa rosa. as the north bay begins to heal community members took time to say thank you to first responders. jesse gary has more on the music and the message people the master tenant of the ghost ship warehouse is talking about the tragedy. it is the first time he has spoken publicly since his arrest. he sat down with us and talked about the case, his family and the deadly fire. he has been charged with 36 counts of manslaughter. one for each person who died in the fire. he says that the warehouse was not up to safety standards and he says he should not bear the full responsibility of the deaths.>> i thought, if you are renting a building to a group of artists that as the owner of the building you need to tell the city i will be collecting money every month and there will be humans coming in and out of the building. what do i have to do to collect that money legally? it was never inspected right? it was listed and in all the newspapers it says it was rented as a dry goods warehouse and changed on his own without telling anybody. he rented it as a storage warehouse. that is the story. that is not the story. it was rented as a arch community center. do i give that to the city? i have never done that. i never moved into a place and told the city what i wanted to do. i told the landlord. the landlord owns the building and has to go to the city to say i think this and then the question is what do i think of the landlord. deceitful and greedy. >> do you think they rented you an unsafe building?>> definitely. they rented francisco police union may push to get tasers issued to police faster. the police commissioner approved the use of tasers friday but they may not be able to implement the tasers into -- until next december. the president of the police association commends the action but told us that he wants use policy drafted in 30 days. if not he is prepared to put a proposal on the june 2018 ballot. >> our polling numbers indicate over 78% of residents in san francisco want officers to be equipped with state-of-the-art equipment which is tasers. tasers will reduce injuries to the public, to the police officers and it will save lives. >> activists and police critics have pushed back against tasers raising concern about abuses. san francisco is one of the last major cities in the country not to have news conference giving more information. >> allie rasmus is live with the latest. >> we are learning more about the motive and his background and why he should not have been able to purchase these weapons. 26 people were killed in the church in sutherland springs yesterday. officials say the youngest of them was 18 months old. the oldest 77. 10 people remain in critical condition. state and federal investigators believe devin kelley was angry at his mother-in-law and he sent her a threatening text. he had a conflict with his ex- wife's parents. investigators say his in-laws occasionally attended the church in sutherland springs although they were not at the church yesterday. the gunman is a veteran of the air force who was court- martialed on charges for assaulting his wife and child. he was sentenced to 12 months of confinement. he received a bad conduct discharge in 2014 and because of his record he should not have been able to purchase the guns in texas and colorado that he had over the past four years. two men who lived near the church try to stop the gunman. one of them saw the gunman walk out of the church and he exchanged gunfire with him. when the gunman took off the good samaritan flagged down another man for help and the two of them pursued the gunman. officials believe the good samaritan may have hit the gunman during the exchange because when he was driving away the fbi called his father on a cell phone to tell him he wasn't going to make it. shortly after that the vehicle veered off the road into a ditch and when police arrived they discovered he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. investigators are going through the scene at the church collecting evidence. that have not released the names of all the victims because they are in the process of notifying family. >> question of the day is about this report. do you think stronger gun control laws can't stop mass shootings? 50% say yes, 40% say no. we had a lot of responses. aaron paul says it can't hurt but karen bates says no if a person wants to commit a mass shooting that will get a gun. >> another viewer says only law- abiding citizens will follow the laws anyway.>> facebook. now for today's weather. it will be nice this afternoon. >> nice november weather. we have changes coming wednesday but we did have cloudy skies this morning with a system stalling out over the top. we have a mix of sun and clouds. a lot of 60s but slightly below average for temperatures. the rain likely coming wednesday and early thursday. there will not be a lot of rain from san jose to moderate but there could be decent amounts in santa rosa and lake county. this system eventually will make it into san jose but we have a stronger system this time next week producing good rain and snow toward shasta and tahoe truckee. the pattern is looking favorable under mostly sunny skies with a lot of cloud coverage in southern california. a lot of that has pushed out of the area. 50s on the temperatures for most right now and overall the cloud coverage giving way to mostly sunny skies with cooler temperatures tomorrow morning after this system comes through. we have a very active pattern until the middle of the month so partly to mostly sunny with cooler nights mild days with temperatures falling toward wednesday and thursday. 60s on the temperatures for today and i would not expect much change except for the breeze warming us up in the south bay wednesday. rain wednesday morning and some hit or miss showers thursday and friday. november is looking good. many parts of the yes, there was a storm that brought 6 to 8 inches. it is a great start to the season although we have cold temperatures at 6200 feet. 33 degrees, but in the upper mountains we have mid-20s. thus no systems are up and running so this is a really good start. it is a good feeling for a normal winter.>> i know this is the time of year when things start to change. you for sure leave behind summertime activities and you start to see people with their boards or their skis. what does it feel like to be up there at this time of year during the transition? >> we are getting ready to go. we have people getting fired up you know, it is all about the first 30. what do you do when the first 30 days of the season? of you get ready? are you in shape and ready to go? for all of us we have locals out running on cross-country skis getting ready for the first day. so we are super excited. >> a lot of us with children are trying to figure out vacation request so we can go to tahoe. are there any secret quiet times , anyway you can help guide us because i don't want to be there when everybody else is there. >> that is a great question. right after the holiday, right after christmas before new year and ready for presidents' day and then right before martin luther king. those are the big popular weekends. or come in the middle of the week, monday tuesday and wednesday. work on the mountain if you can, do your emails and then go ride. >> it is hard to back that up what you guys have up there so do you have any sense we will reach the amount of snow from last year? >> that is a great question but i'm sure steve knows. we are looking at a weak system. we just came out of october and it was very dry. last year being 400% above normal. i had to go back and look at the facts, 1959 was 550 inches which was normal and then we had one of the largest of 980 inches. so i am feeling confident for a normal winter but i am not sure if we will get 758. >> it is so good to talk to you. this president will be visiting south korea, china, vietnam and the philippines. he is expected to cross paths with vladimir putin. congress is working on their tax plan, the bill will go before the house committee and they are committed to getting a bill passed by the end of the year but democrats and some republicans are not happy with the elimination of some popular deductions such as those for state taxes. paul ryan defends mr. -- the changes and says the goal is to lead americans keep their money. >> the difference is that instead of using a tax deduction to lower your liability we will make it easier so you don't pay in the first place.>> they are taking this deeper into debt. they are adding $3 trillion to the deficit. that is very hard to come back for. the next 10 years will be hemorrhaging of the national debt. >> republicans plan to pass the bill by thanksgiving. a lot of people eagerly awaiting the start of recreational marijuana sales in california on january 1 but be prepared for sticker shock. several new taxes will be attached to recreational marijuana sales which is expected to drive up prices. some fear that bargain-hunting consumers will turn to the black district confirms that michael bartel a science teacher at walnut creek intermediate was put on leave following his arrest by martinez police. this involves an incident at a school where he was previously a substitute teacher. the district performed thorough background checks including a background history and fingerprint check. anthony weiner has just surrendered to authorities. he is now on his way to prison outside of boston. in september he was sentenced to 21 months in prison after being convicted of sending sexually explicit messages to a 15-year-old. investigators in new york are trying to make sure the man charged in the deadly terror attack where eight died really was a lone wolf and acted alone. the immigrant from uzbekistan drove the truck into the victim's. he was yet of iphones in san francisco. $300,000 worth of iphones stolen wednesday morning while a ups driver was delivering them. >> there will be a lot on different websites but a lot of them will trickle to the street. >> captain joe mcfadden is the head of the new crimes unit. they hope to find the iphones before they hit ebay. >> when they reach the consumer's they will realize it is not a great deal. when we find them they will have to be taken as evidence. >> every iphone has an electronic serial number. if your phone is stolen it would be disabled. if you are able to get it up and running
