Malcolm x academy and Elementary School you see behind me is just one of the three schools impacted. The School District says they want to make sure parents know its not the water that contains lead. Its the fixtures that might be aging or corroded. And were learning this isnt the first time. 20 years ago back in 1997, the department of health actually found alarming lead levels in five schools and ktvu did our own testing 20 years ago in 10 schools. So we are also finding out tonight from the district that it wont be the last time we see these results in the state. Every morning, before students flood the front entrances of schools, the flushing begins. All School Janitors are required to let the water run from the faucets and fountains for at least 30 seconds. When the water has been sitting overnight and not in use, the chances of it having higher lead levels are greater. Reporter in arena the San Francisco unified School District in april, the San Francisco unified School District tested too testing testing. Now its mandated. 73 schools were tested 3 positive with elevated lead levels, Malcolm X Academy, west portal Elementary School and San Francisco International High school. No school had come back with all fixture testing above levels. Its in each case a handful or one in one case. So we are looking at all of the six or seven shut down. Reporter at Malcolm X Academy one of those fixtures is the fountain that most kids use when they come in and out of recess but schools arent the only place children are being exposed to lead. According to the department of public health, 83 of San Francisco homes are old enough to have leadbased paint. The homes with the most violations for lead contaminants are in the potrero hill neighborhood where San Francisco international is and Hunters Point where Malcolm X Academy is located not to mention this map shows that the majority of the children exposed to lead live in Hunters Point. This is like the only side of San Francisco that always has a lead problem in water and no other part. Reporter the School District says they havent pinpointed a pattern yet but says with the new state mandate we can expect more schools to test positive for lead in the future. The district says remediation wont begin until the completion of further testing and, of course, those results, and we are also learning that the school is also going to be testing other fixtures. 74 schools of 124 have been tested so far. There are plenty of other schools to be tested. In the meantime, though, parents are urged to have their pediatrician test their children for lead. Im told it is covered under insurance. A new lawsuit accuses uc davis of being responsible for the suicide of a University Official accused of Sexual Harassment. The Sacramento Bee reports the lawsuit was filed on matter of of the widow of colonel christopher day loss santos. He was a scientific researcher. The suit claims the man was notified by email of the Sexual Harassment accusations. He was told he was suspended and to stay away from campus. The suit says other University Employees accused of Sexual Harassment were not barred from campus pending an investigation. Ucdavis denies any wrongdoing. The San Francisco 49ers today along with several local Police Unions announced an effort to foster better relations within communities while also reducing gun violence.
