Fires, that according to the latest information from cal fire. Here are some of the numbers, napa county to Sonoma County, 27,000 acres burned. The atlas fire moved into sonoma, napa and solano counties and has burned 25,000 acres and is growing. The fire in Sonoma County, the nuns fire has burned 5000 acres. No containment. There were more evacuations overnight. Im going to show you the areas being evacuated. The largest fire burn from napa into Sonoma County and spread to a northwest section. The two areas highlighted in red are the santa rosa evacuation zones. One portion covers highway 101, the Fountain Grove parkway and the other zone is along state route 12. Mandatory evacuations are in west llano county. This map is posted on the facebook page, the zone is inside the redlines near the napa county line. On its facebook post, Solano County sheriff wrote there is a mandatory evacuation order, this means evacuate now. The curfew in the mandatory evacuation zones remains in effect for a few more minutes. Officials imposed a curfew to prevent possible looting. And to keep people safe. That evacuation zone is wider than the burn area that leaves many homes sitting empty. They do not want leaders to take advantage of that after people had to leave their neighborhood. Some homes are still standing. Chief is not decided if there will be another dusk to dawn curfew ordered but we will keep you posted. We are in santa rosa this morning covering some of the damage. Many of the local landmarks we know were destroyed, the high school was damaged. With like now . Reporter you can see behind me what little is left of Cardinal Newman high school. When we drove up not long ago, it was dark. It should be daylight but the smoke and haze and ashes making it look more like late evening. This is what is left of Cardinal Newman high school. An emotional home to how many graduates. We know half the classrooms were destroyed. Specifically classrooms 28 through 35. Also destroyed were the main Office Building, the library, rooms 16 through 19, a humanities wing. Other buildings and areas on the campus. They are clearly no longer standing. As we show you pictures we took yesterday when we came to the site, school officials, trying to make sense of what they are able to do for students. Believe it or not there are about half of the classrooms still standing. I read on facebook from the head of Cardinal Newman that they are just trying to figure out what they can still provide for students. Perhaps still housing some here, others to another location, its all up in the air. What that depends on is what fire officials tell School Leaders what they are able to do at this site. Highway 101 up north. We try to get off a couple of exits but were blocked by Highway Patrol officers. We had to pull over and appeal to them, can we get into tell the story of whats happening. They said yes. They let us through and we drove in off of 101 to the east of 101 on ursuline road. I saw two small spot fires burning. I have not seen any firefighters in this area. You can tell its pretty much quiet except for us. When you think about whats going to happen to the school site, we know theres already a go fund me account, 775 with a goal of 5000. If you think of what a modern high school costs that is just a small drop in the bucket. But at least the sentiment of wanting to rebuild and reclaim what belongs here and let it grow and flourish for future generations, as well as previous graduates, that is much alive. Im so glad you were able to get through. We were all on the air yesterday getting conflicting information. It burned down, its safe, part of it burned. My daughter, one of her friends on the dance studio had moved up there recently and she sent out on social media, which im sure many students did, she said i lost my school and my house. While. Reporter imagine. We are all parents. We note school can be a bit of comfort in routine and regularity. The people who dont have homes dont have a school to come to. To see that favorite teacher or hang out at the one spot. A lot of devastation of Cardinal Newman high school. You see some rooftops standing. You see trees have burned a couple hundred feet behind me. Right up here, i photographer and i were asking ourselves, is this it . It was pitch black. Thankfully he saw a sign that said student drop off. This is it. We pulled in. I say the sun is coming up, the sun has been up but its so smoky and hazy it looks like evening. Im happy to say i am wearing a sweatshirt under this jacket because it is cold. Cold by my standards. Is good news. Reporter it is. I thought i was going to be that roasting he. Especially in the afternoon hours. Right now its a pleasant chill. I will be reporting for you throughout the morning. We will see if anyone else is here. Before you go, maybe you have heard are they setting up counseling to reach out to the kids i just have a daughter who went off to college, junior and senior year there so much change going on. Its emotional. They will need a lot of support. Reporter they are. Its too early to tell. Reaching out to the school and looking at social media, there is nothing organized. As i look up and look around, really, its just us. I will be honest, i am hoping or expecting some former graduates to come back to see in person with a have heard about on the news. Im hoping to have a chance to talk with anyone who went to Cardinal Newman or goes to Cardinal Newman. There is nothing organized happening here because frankly they dont have the electricity. The space. There is nothing. It will be a matter of weeks and months and likely years. So glad that you are up there and as you mentioned, reach out with stories and information to her. We will check in with you throughout the morning. The time is seven decks 08. We know more about two people who died. An elderly couple living on atlas peak road. They could not escape the flames. The granddaughter confirmed the victims were 100yearold Charles Rippey known as peach, and his 99yearold wife sara rippey. They celebrated their 75th anniversary. The atlas fire is still burning out of control. 25,000 acres have burned, destroyed 125 homes and buildings and it is threatening 5000 others. We have firefighters working across the fire ground in the perimeter and the central areas of the fire where there is still hot spots. There are hundreds of firefighters online. The winds have died down. The firefighters are dealing with rugged terrain, terrain they are not familiar with. There are 500 firefighters out there now. The wildfires also forced the closure of several different schools. Sonoma county Public Schools will be closed. Sonoma State University as well as santa rosa junior college. Schools in the Napa Valley Unified School district will also stay closed today. If you want to see a complete list of the composers go to our website. While the death toll is at 11, there is fear the number could be much worse. Authorities are looking for more than 100 people who are still listed as missing. Friends and family have been scrambling to try to locate loved ones. Cell phone service has been spotty making it more difficult to find people. Sonoma county says its possible many of the missing are actually safe but cannot be reached because of widespread loss of Cell Phone Service and other communications. We heard from some people who literally ran from their homes with nothing including cell phones. There are probably many people desperately trying to get word out. Now we are hearing about yet another fire late last night in santa rosa. That is still threatening homes and forcing more people to evacuate. We martinez is in santa rosa with an update. Reporter now that the sun has come up it appears that the conditions have improved here, the same thing it has come down a bit. It is cooler. We are not seen the tall flames we saw earlier joining us from cal fire. Am i seeing this right . Of the conditions better . All of these fires have been at the mercy of the weather. When the weather and wind pickup, we are getting some activity is overnight. Dings have calmed down. You can tell the unstable air is being bringing smoke to the ground. Conditions are more favorable at this point. Reporter i was going to ask about the plan of attack. Are you going out to attack it or have the cruise stay here . Guarding homes . Number 1 priority is to save lives. That we have been doing for 36 hours. The second priority is to get containment. A lot of firefighters overnight protecting structures. And now the next priority is to get lines constructed and containment. The contention we have right now is we have a sheer volume of fires in such a large area. We are prioritizing our resources for lives and property. As more resources come in from out from the state and are plans get put into place thats when will get lines in the ground and structures protected. Reporter when we talked earlier you said there were more homes or more structures lost overnight. In sonoma . Some of the things we are seeing, some structures with smoldering fires were flaring up overnight. Those are the structures we were seeing burning as a result of the fire. As far as the fire front, there isnt a large fire front like we saw 24 hours ago due to the wind. We are getting smoldering fires within the perimeter. Reporter can you tell me how many homes were lost . I dont have an exact number. Damage inspection teams are out there. They will do a methodical process and make sure it gets updated. Reporter how are we here in oakmont . Did we lose structures . The homes are being threatened. Anytime there is a fire and controlled on a hillside pushing into a community, we still consider homes threatened. Have resources on a lot of these structures appear protecting the structures. Which is favorable due to weather conditions. Anything can change in an instant with the winds. Are firefighters will be out here protecting homes. If you have any updates on the other fires like atlas peak . I believe it was 25,000 acres and 0 contained. Those numbers will be updated shortly as crews get in place. We should get better numbers in the future. For me, thank you for joining us. Again, if you want to take another look at this ridge, we are seeing a lot of smoke this morning. But the flames are not as visible. Its not just because the light has come, its because the fire has gone across the trees and the flames arent as high. We are not seeing the embers that were swirling earlier. The conditions have improved. Homes are still safe, being guarded by firefighters. Nothing has been lost. That is some good news. Thank you for the update. Steve is over here talking about the wind and the smoke. The smoke is making it back to San Francisco. Even though we have colder temperatures, 40 degrees. When she said its cold, upper 30s not far from her. Lets talk about the smoke. Its continuing to come back from napa county. We still have a little north northeast breeze the goes from napa county right back over San Pablo Bay over the Oakland Hills and right into San Francisco. People are saying why is it happening . Its a northeast breeze or and east breeze so its offshore. The onshore is up on the mendocino coast but hasnt made a here. Very unhealthy air. Its incredibly smoky here in phoenicia. Take a look at some of the observations. Atlas peak, sonoma north at 2, 78 humidity. American canyon, 52 degrees. 68 . Lets head to the Oakland Hills. Oakland south above the oakland zoo, northeast at 10. 38 . Had to San Francisco, there are a few locations that had an easterly breeze. 59, 70 . North of the sunset district. There are a couple showing a westerly direction. Enough of an easterly component that its bringing smoke back in. To the north, there is 37 degrees in geyserville. Hills berg north and 46. You can see the humidity, this will certainly help the firefighters in a big way. We have lost a lot of breeze. The humidity is up and temperatures are down. 20 degrees for some compared to yesterday at this time. Napa airport, north at six. We are not done with the offshore breeze yet. You can see we can see the fog moving in on the mendocino coast, its trying on the sonoma coast. The offshore continues. 21 degrees cooler in fairfield than yesterday. Fog is trying but until we reverse the breeze, the system should help to it later today. 60s and 70s on your temperatures with a few low 80s. The traffic is now moving through san rafael bridge. We had an overturned vehicle at the toll plaza. Its gone. The traffic is moving well as we drive through, as well as expected. There is a bigger backup coming out of richmond on the way to san rafael. We are looking at the bay bridge and other approaches. Macarthur maine is taking about one hour from vallejo to the maze and you are going to wait there another 25 minutes. Its jammed. The carpool lanes are moving well. This is a look at 280 in san jose. That is moving along well. I want to refresh you on the closures. If you are driving in sonoma and napa county, there will be plenty of closures. Highway 101, there are closures throughout especially after highway 12 in the main parts of the fire area. And see no bicentennial river hopper those offramps close. Also give yourself plenty of time to navigate these areas. 7 18. We are going to have a lot more on the wildfires in just a moment. Coming up we take you to napa where people were doing everything they can to save their homes. Were following other breaking news. Including an amber alert. Allegedly by her mother who does not have custody. Lease say sixyearold malayia davisbooker was abducted by her mother 34yearold Laquita Davis. Police describing Laquita Davis as homeless and acting with diminished capacity. Last seen wearing a brown jacket and blue jeans. Some people in napa and sonoma counties did not evacuate and stay behind to protect their homes will the neighborhood was in flames. This man risked his life, walked back into the fire zone to keep flames away from his home in napa. Armed with a garden hose and week water pressure he soaked what he could as he watched his neighbors house being destroyed. How do you grapple with that . Its frustrating. I get the fact that they have jobs to do and are doing them as fast as they can. Its so sad. Its so sad. Did you know your neighbors . Very well. We spoke with three times last night. Fire crews are stretched thin. There was a single fire truck working to save the entire street full of homes. This is one of many stories of those calls and bravery. Weve been following the atlas peak fire that is still burning out of control. It has burned into sonoma and solano counties. Some roads are closed in the green valley area west of there fairfield. What is the latest on that fire . Reporter atlas fire is burning in napa. Celano and sonoma. According to the commander, it is three separate fires in close proximity that have now been grouped into one. That is a way to better facilitate getting resources to the fire. Where we are is on rockville road. This is in vilano county. Up this road and over the hill, that is where the fire has been creeping over into Solano County. In preparation, they put evacuation orders into effect last night. This is three miles from a neighborhood near rockville. It has not reached the neighborhood but Solano County sheriffs have notified residence last night, going door to door to let the people know that they need to get packed up and ready to go. The primary concern is that there are only two ways in and out of the neighborhood with hundreds of homes. If the fire moves quickly downhill, there wouldnt be enough time to get everyone out. They want to give everyone advance notice overnight. Around midnight its hard to reach everyone. Some people may have been asleep. This morning there were a few homeowners who approached us and said they will come to discover they were now part of this new mandatory evacuation area. Its not wise to stay. I wouldve stayed i realized it was mandatory. We are very nervous and afraid. Reporter weve seen a lot of people with their horse trailers coming in and out of the area trying to move out the last of their animals including this woman who says she has eight horses, one goat and 12 chickens. She made about three trips during the overnight hours trying to move all of her animals safely. The latest update we have from cal fire is that, the latest numbers they have from 10 00 last night, the Incident Commander said they were working on getting new updated numbers, but the latest they have is 5000 homes are threatened by the atlas fire. Its burning in three counties. It started in napa but has spread to sonoma and Solano County. So far they have zero containment. Just to clarify where you are, is that including the green valley area where you are . This is very close to the green valley road which runs along here. There are several hundred homes i would say. We talked to a deputy who said he did not have an estimate of how many homes in this area and he said its easily thousands of people when you consider more than one person in every home. A lot of people are impacted. They wanted to give everyone advanced notice to get out so they dont have problems should the fire sp
