I look up and softball sized embers were coming down our street. It looked like something out of an armageddon movie. I was knocking on doors and ringing bells. You can only hope. It came on quick, didnt . I said im sorry to wake you up in case theres a fire i needed to wake you up. With these fires its unpredictable. Sometimes you think you have five minutes and then you have no minutes. We had no time. There was not really an evacuation, it was that fast. People had to get in their cars and go. Its just so scary. Its one of those things that you think would never happen. This is my childhood home. Its unbelievable standing care looking at all this ash. My bicycles, everything is completely gone. This is unreal. Its devastating. All i can say is devastating. I have my life. My wife and my family and my kids. My neighbors house broke down but it saved mine. Im pretty thankful. I dont know. Im starting to let it sink in right now. Its not good. We bought all the cases of water they had. We are very low on supplies right now. This is a horrific fire. I would want someone to do it for me. We have the ability and the resources to do it. We all have to pitch in and do what we can, if we can. I have friends who have lost their homes and everything. This is very devastating. I am lucky. My house is fine. My family is fine. My city is not. Its going to take a long time for us to recover what happened today. That says it all. There is a desperate plea for both volunteers and supplies. Join Energy Upgrade california and do your thing. Welcome back. When the fire started sunday, many found themselves trapped. Frank somerville and Heather Holmes spoke with a chp officer about some of the rescues they carried out. Tell us about the chp helicopter rescues. They started early this morning with people trapped on atlas peak. That was very dangerous for those pilots. Yes it was. It started when the fire took place. We had an aircraft get airborne and surveilled the area and they found people trapped by the flames. Our helicopter landed several times to pick people up who were trapped and put them in the aircraft and flew them to safety. Even the other helicopters, the firefighting helicopters, they will not fly at night because of the danger. These pilots really saved some lives yes. We have rescued 44 people so far since the fire started. Some were ambulatory in the mid 90s and some were as young as five years old. Embers were bouncing off the aircraft as they rescued the parties last night. Is this all related to the tubbs fire or the altas peak fire . This is mainly the atlas road fire. Thats the main one we have been doing a majority of the rescues for. Im sorry. Atlas peak fire. The pilots literally put the helicopter down in the middle of the roads with embers flying all over . Yes, sir. Thats what we do. We are here to protect lives and environment and property. They were out there last night helping people. Did you do any bucket rescues where you would lower the rope or wasnt always coming down and landing . Every rescue we did we put skids on the ground and rescue that way. We do not do bucket drops. That is remarkable. Are there still any of these rescues going on now . Are there people that need to be rescued . There is a little issue where some people do not know if there is mandatory evacuations. The ones we did this afternoon, cell phones and land lines were inoperative. The did not know people needed to be rescued. We have three aircraft ready for rescue and we have one about ready to take flight. Have you spoke to any of the pilots and what did they say about landing in the middle of all of these flames . One of my pilots i spoke with said it was the most adrenaline rush hes had with the department. There are people in harms way. They went back later and one of the landing zones was burnt over. With a helicopters damaged or are they okay . The helicopters are perfectly fine. They are more worried about getting the civilians out of harms way. You said some of those rescued were children, a five yearold, im guessing this was a family that needed to be brought to safety . Yes. One of the family members, the father was driving a vehicle and the road was blocked by flames. The helicopter landed and his wife and child were put into the aircraft. He stayed behind so they could get out first. A second aircraft came in to rescue the father at a later time. Im curious, how did you know . They were on the road driving . How did you know they needed to be rescued . The helicopter crew started flying around looking for people who appeared to be trapped. They could tell which roads were blocked. They would sit down and rescue them. There was no radio communication. They did it visually by flying around. That is just remarkable. It really is. As you mentioned, they saved 44 45 people . 44 people at this point. They also landed in yards and used the public addressed system and spotless to get people to evacuate background as well. That could be in the hundreds. Warning people who were basically inaccessible, telling them to get to safety and physically removing people who were in harms way. Have your pilots done this before . We have been talking about the fact that this is a fire unlike anything we have seen. Im guessing they have some experience in this but it strikes me that they would not have a lot of experience when it comes to actually landing in an area surrounded by flames. We dont normally land in areas surrounded by flames. We leave that to cal fire. The last time our pilots did this was two years ago during the lake county fire is. Its something we do but not as frequently as other rescues. Can you take us through last night . How did you first get the call . Was there any hesitation saying this is really dangerous . How did that process work . Last night one of our airplanes was on patrol over vallejo and saw a glow in the distance. They focused on the globe. We were one of the first people to report the fire. As they were putting or reporting the fire, then notified the helicopter on the ground. Our airplane and helicopter, from the time the fire started, went into rescue operation mode. It was the most harrowing thing theyve seen. They have never seen anything like this. Our pilots have been flying for over 20 years. You have heard that so many times from so many people. Weve never seen anything like this before. We are so grateful for those people who are out rescuing people. 4 49 am. Sal is covering i know youve spoken to many chp officers they go right in and help the police and fire. Thats right. This morning when it comes to the roads, they are better than they were yesterday. Highway 101 is open. 37 is open. When the fire first started we had a lot of closures. Right now we have a lot of local closures where the fire is. The major roads, 37 and 101 are open. There are still a lot of closures for highway 128. We are looking at the commute on the altamont pass. 580 is slow and so is 205. Some people did have the day off yesterday but today it seems like it is back to normal. Livermore, pleasanton into hayward. Interstate 88 north and southbound. Traffic is moving along well as you drive through. There have been no major issues. At the bay bridge, it is light for so far. We have much better conditions even though windsor from the north and east slightly. Nothing like yesterday. Humidity is up. Look at all the fires. These are the technical names by cal fire. Look how many there are. The redwood complex, sulphur in lake county and the numerous fires around sonoma and napa county. The wind speeds have slowed. The red flag warning just ended at 5 00. There will occasionally be gusts up to 15 or 20. At the surface it is very quiet. There is still an east wind toward lake county. At least its not all north and northeast. One observation in cloverdale shows a bout southwind. 41 versus 73 humidity. We lost a few sites in napa. Atlas peak has a northeast wind but its less than 10. 32 humidity. American canyon, 53 within northeast wind. Napa, east wind and 48 . 40 degrees and 66 humidity. Right now theres not much of a breeze, southerly at concord. North and fearful. There was fog moving up the coast. Its going south to north. A system in the Pacific Northwest will move towards us. That will usher in cooler temperatures and higher humidity. Temperatures are noticeably cooler. Between 11 and 20 degrees compared to 24 hours ago. Yesterday at this time we had gusts at 44 in vacaville. Things are calming down and temperatures will be cooler. 60s, 70s and a few low 80s. Nothing like yesterday. Cooler weather will move in and i think we get fog late tonight into tomorrow. The breeze will turn northerly after thursday into friday. It will be cooler and wind will not be a strong. Much better. We will continue our coverage of the wildfires.
