Reporter it just breaks your heart because this would be one thing if it was just one or two homes, and everybody had a neighbor or friend who could console each other. Take a look at this. This is just wiped out. This is hundreds of homes on the flats, and not up in the heels. The fire came so fast that the Fire Department had no option whatsoever to try do anything about this. In fact, just a few minutes ago , some Santa Rosa Police officers came here, and they were looking over your for something. What that something would have been was very likely missing person. They found nothing, and then they left. This is a situation where you have an entire neighborhood completely wiped out. How are these folks going to be able to manage . Every one of these people are going to have to have another home to live in while their home is being rebuilt. If you are a renter, then you have just jumped into one of the worst rental markets in the history of california. You can see some fire just coming out of the natural gas lines. There is nothing else going on here and they have not turned off the gas because it would go out for the other neighbors who still have a home here. That is a situation they would try to avoid. We will verify all of this information as we talked to the people in charge. This is the situation appear, it is completely destroyed. So many cars were left abandoned because people did not have time to figure out what car to take. Because of that, all of these cars and all of these homes, and virtually every tree here has been destroyed. So, when you take a look at this, you realize that this is one of the worst urban fires we have had in this company in a long time. It may rank up there when we find out how many buildings have actually been destroyed throughout Northern California in this series of firestorms. It is just plain awful. The situation is now getting to the point where people are coming back and looking at the property. They are hoping they can find something. If you take a look over here, here is a gentleman who is coming to try and stop this fire from burning. He has just turned off the gas. Tom baker in coffee park. Tom, how many holes would you estimate that were destroyed and is there any left . Sometimes with fires they can be so haphazard. When i look at those pictures, i do not see any homes standing at all. Reporter we are having a little trouble here with tom baker and our signal. Did i hear our producer say we have a press conference . Here we go. They are giving a update on the Current Situation, and lets go ahead and take a listen in. Last night at around 7 30 pm, we had multiple fires throughout the city, and it drained our resources very quickly. At this time, we had a fire marching toward santa rosa, and we realized early on that the wind that we was battling, and the fire would come into santa rosa. We did what we could and we ordered mutual aid early and established a unified command. We set up our staging area, and it became the parking lot in the city of santa rosa. It did not take long to realize that was not a good spot. Then we went to fire station three and we had three immediate strike teams and 25 other strike teams inbound. It was all we could do to put engines in the right place. We had every resource in the county, and we recalled every firefighter in the city of santa rosa. We used every resource to the best of our ability, but with that kind of wind, i am not sure when it started, we was overwhelmed. By morning time, the fire was about 25,000 up to 30,000 acres. It was very windy and a very dry wind. With that, i am going to turn it over to californias fire Incident Commander and he is going to talk about what they are going to do. Thank you. Good evening. I am the Incident Commander from the california fire incident command one. Our is the team was activated at approximately 1 00 a. M. We came down to support the incident in sonoma and napa county. Ultimately this morning, we were assigned the responsibility of command, and with Santa Rosie Rosa city fire to command the incident. The Current Situation is that 25,000 up to 30,000 acres are 0 contained. The fire has done a good amount of magnitude of damage, and we are still working to put our Damage Assessment teams together and get them out to accurately document the amount of damage that we have. We have had a great cooperative effort throughout the night from local and Fire Agencies in Sonoma County as well as local Law Enforcement agencies. Also, there has been a continuing effort from the local, state, and federal Fire Departments up and down the state of california. We would like to urge you and the public to help us with any new fire starts to be sure that we do not get any. Conditions are severe up and down the state, and resources are spread the end with all of the fires we have up and down the state. Thank you. Good evening. The shares offices role started late last night as we have been supporting fire evacuations. We had deputies pin down with civilians they could not get out, and the fire just went around them. It has been quite harrowing to them. What i really want to get out to the public is to please stay off the road. Please stay out of the evacuated areas, and we will be making arrests if we see looters. Bear with us. There is a lot of highly trained First Responders to keep everybody safe, and we are actively trying to rescue people right now. That is the state that we are in. We have seven confirmed this related to this fire so far, and that number is going to change. It is just too early, and we cannot even get into some of the spots. I do not expected to stay that way. Are there any questions i can answer . We are not going to let anybody into the barn areas. We are trying to keep everything safe, and frankly, most everything is still hot. When i left the main office 40 minutes ago, we were still doing evacuation down in south county. Phone calls and deputies knocking on doors. We are going to take questions afterwards. Good evening everybody. I am the commander for Sonoma County. I would just like to say that our hearts go out to the friends and families of those who lost their lives and their homes. It is a devastating thing to see what is going on out there. Last night, we started answering calls for service on the eastern side of the county near the highway 12 area. We have continued to do so for the morning hours, and we have brought in extra personnel from all over the bay area to help us assist with road closures and calls for service, evacuations, and medical aid and all of the various things you can think of. It has been difficult for everybody and our Agency Partners have both been outstanding, and i cannot thank them enough. They are true professionals. We are trying to do everything that we can to keep the roads safer everybody, but as the sheriff mentioned, if you do not have to be out on the road, then please do not get on the road. It is going to take a lot for everything to subside and thinks to become safe again. Closures are minimum at this point, but for a long time, we had major arteries closed. But again, there is still a lot going on, and please drive safe and within your means. Do not drive on the roads and less you absolutely have to. Thank you. I would like to introduce the acting chief for Santa Rosa Police department. Good evening. My name is greg swarts, and i am currently the acting chief. As the others have all said, this incident started for us about 17 hours ago. We first got a notice that the fires were moving rapidly into the city of santa rosa. Since that time, Santa Rosa Police department along with our fellow Police Department throughout the region as well as firefighters have been engaged in continual evacuations and rescue efforts. Those efforts are still ongoing. We do still have new fires flaring up within the city. Our officers are continuing to go around and evacuate people from the affected areas, and when those people are unable to get out of the area, we actually try to perform some rescues. It has been horrific and terrifying for a great many people. We ask that as we continue with these efforts, like the others have said, stay out of the mandatory evacuation areas for your own safety as well as the safety of the First Responders who have to go in and try and contain these fires and rescue people inside of the areas. To that end, the city of santa rosa under the Emergency Declaration authority has enacted a curfew for the mandatory evacuation zones from 6 45 pm until sunrise. Anybody who is out in those hours in the mandatory evacuation zones will be subject to be stopped and potentially arrested if they refuse to either go back inside or to leave the area. That is for the safety of the people in that area as well as the safety of the First Responders in allowing us to get through and try and get the situation under control. With that, i would like to introduce sean. Good evening. I would just like to take a chance to thank the citizens of the city of santa rosa for the resiliency they have shown in these very trying times. I would also like to a knowledge that smacked a knowledge the work that our Public Safety team acknowledged the work in our Public Safety team has done. When i stepped into the situation about 3 00 this morning, we had to declare a state of emergency shortly after the county declared a state of emergency. We had the governor declare a state of emergency for the county. I would just be remiss and also acknowledging the hard work and all of the support that we are getting from across the state as people come here and the ploy and assist us in this very, very difficult and trying times. But i will tell you that the men and women of santa rosa are committed to seeing this through and helping everyone they can. What i would say is that i would urge the citizens of santa rosa to go to our website and connect with us as we get information out about this dynamic and everchanging situation. Thank you. I would like to turn the podium over to the mayor. First of all, i want to a knowledge that i am as frustrated as all of you at about the security of information that we have at this point. I want to know how many people have died, how many people have been injured. The people have been evacuated also. I want to know also how many structures have been lost. It is frustrating. On the other hand, for the last 17 or 18 hours, our personnel have been out there doing the job of saving lives, and that has to come first. There will be time later on to measure up the damage and count the numbers. I want to say my heart goes out to everyone who has suffered loss in the last day or so. I am lucky in that my house and family are fine. My city is not. It is going to take a long time to recover what has happened today. I am really glad to have the support of our local, county, and state and federal partners. We are going to need you as we go through this difficult time. I also want to say that santa rosa is a strong city. We are a resilient city. We are a indivisible city, and we are going to need to hang together as we get through this. Thank you. We will now hear from our board of supervisors. Thank you. I want to assure our residents that it has been all hands on deck since about 3 am this morning when we opened and operated our Emergency Operation center. The amount of people that have come together to work on this is truly amazing. I would also tell you that i am busy but devastated in terms of what i have seen. It is the on billy. As the mayor said, i think a lot of us who are in elected office are frustrated right now because we so want to care and minister to the people that we love and serve. I did spend some time out of the evacuee centers today, this morning, and afternoon, and of special interest and concern to me is the many seniors who got evacuated from assistedliving who need medication and very fragile medical needs. I would still also tell you that i spoke with senator harriss office this morning about some of those needs. I am very encouraged that the state and federal government is here being represented, and they understand the devastation that we have experience. We are a resilient county, and we will come back from this. But right now, we need to agree because the loss is significant, and we promise you that we will try get you as much information as we can. I would like to now introduce my colleague supervisor. I just want to give a shout out to all of the brave men and women who are manning the lines out there and battling the flames. Also want to thank the Law Enforcement at all of the emergency technicians. The resiliency of this county is amazing. I was at some of the shelters and Evacuation Centers earlier today, and cars were lined up delivering goods. Peoples hearts are big in this county, and they want to step up. We are looking forward to moving forward with our state and federal partners and rebuilding. Thank you. I am mike thompson, and i represent part of Sonoma County. I just want everybody to know that your state and federal partners are going to be working overtime to make sure that we are there to help in any way in every way that we can. As you have already heard, the governor has declared a state of emergency, and that has been forwarded to the federal government. It rest with fema right now, and our office has been working with fema to push them to make the declaration. So far they have approved the federal fire assistant grants, which will help a great deal. As this progresses, i fully expect that we will be getting assistant from fema in the way of public assistance, which is going to be very important for our state and local government partners, and individual assistance that will help with individuals who have had a loss of property. I am assuming that low interest loans will be available. I was in a helicopter today in Sonoma County. The Sheriff Department took a number of photographs, and all of them have been sent both to fema and the white house to make sure that we know how serious this is and how devastated our community is. I look forward to continuing to work with the community and a special thanks to all of the firefighters and the sheriffs and Police Officers who have been doing a fantastic job along with all of the local Government Employees who have been working 24 seven on this. Thank you. We are going to take a few questions. The fire is still under investigation at this time, and once we get information we will get that out to you. We are less than 17 hours, and we have not fully investigated out there to determine what the cause of the fire is. I cannot tell you any more about the this. We have only recovered seven people in the hotspots of the fire. We have been getting reports of people in the neighborhood and a couple of a possible burglary calls, but we are just starting to hear about that. We have 200 people working for the Sheriffs Office and Law Enforcement right now. We have also 120 up to 150 officers from other Law Enforcement places. We are locking this neighborhood down so that we do not have this problem. We had just had a few calls in a few business and home areas. San francisco sent 100 officers, there is roughly 20 agency that sent people to us today. I just know they have found seven people, and i do not know any news about how they found them. We just have evacuations going on right now. I can cover some of that for you. Before we came up we are, we had officers conducting evacuations in the Fountain Grove parkway neighborhoods. We also had evacuations in Spring Lake Village on montgomery drive on the east end of town. Most of the evacuation and rescue efforts have been taking place later in the afternoon, and we are still in the Fountain Grove area. That is also the site of some of the most harrowing rescues last night. Officers were going in and reporting that they were surrounded by flames and having a hard time getting out. I do not know how they got out. I just know that they all got out, and medics got victims in their cars and transported them to either Evacuation Centers or hospitals. I cannot tell you for certain. I know in a few cases we believe that to be true, but i do not know about all of them. Issues me . Excuse me . Primarily in the Fountain Grove neighborhoods. We were doing evacuations recently over by spring lake, but most of them are still taking place in the hills around Fountain Grove parkway. Thank you. We have a number of shelters ope
