Reporter a young man next to her, a friend, also went down. We had lost one of our friends. My friends boyfriend actually. Reporter she made her way to the nearby mgm and finally found an ambulance where three other gunshot victims were already inside. One man was shot in the butt. I felt so bad. I was laying on his lap. I said, im so sorry this must be super uncomfortable for you right now. His wife was in the front seat. She was shot in the foot. Next to me in a gurney was a person who was being resuscitated. By the time we got to the hospital, he didnt make it. Um reporter the hospital was so crowded, she was put on a gurney and had to stay in the hallway where the scope of what happened began to sink in. I heard people screaming and crying. Thats when it hit me. But not what was really going on. Reporter her friend didnt survive. Were all trying to be as okay as we can. Reporter she leaves las vegas with a friend gone, a bullet in her back and insight uncommon for anyone, let alone a 20yearold. I see the mgm through the window and get anxious because thats where i ran to but im not gonna not come back here. Im not gonna be fearful of what this is or what happened. Its not you know, you just cant let the fear become you. You need to be stronger than that and stand tall. Reporter back again live on las vegas boulevard, you can see a lot of the flowers, balloons, candles that have been left behind by mourners and wellwishers for the victims of this terrible shooting that took place just a few hundred feet away from where im standing. For her, for savannah, theres a long road to recovery. She is on the road right now driving back from las vegas to sonoma county. She is studying to become a teach you but taking a break from the studies because of her medical situation and she hopes to be able to return to school soon. As for the bullet in her back, she doesnt even know if thats going to be removed or not. She has to see a specialist when she gets back to the bay area to determine the risk it could pose to her spine. If there is no risk, doctors may determine, she tells me, that it simply is better to leave it in her body. But she will have to be checked periodically over the course of the rest of her life to see if that bullet moves and presents further risks. So she has a long uncertain future ahead with her injury. Ken, im just wondering your thoughts there being down on the Las Vegas Strip with the mandalay bay behind you and the streets closed off and and and the the makeshift memorial if you will right at your feet. What are your thoughts . Reporter my thoughts are, most people are good. Most people are really good. And youre seeing it here. You look up there and this is really striking. And give credit to our photographer greg for going with me on this. But you can see one of the shattered windows. And it gives you a sense of perspective on where the gunman was and how far away it was to shoot entirely across las vegas boulevard across the street over to the area right over here where this concert with 22,000 people was taking place. So he didnt have to be particularly accurate even though were hearing now that he had three different rifles mounted on tripods to steady his shot. With that many people firing into that crowd, he is bound to strike someone and unfortunately, um, you know, people we know from the bay area, people we know were hurt and people we know from the bay area were killed in this. And it just shows theres six degrees of separation. We all know somebody who knows somebody. And so we are personally touched by this. But again, getting back to my point, being here in las vegas with the residents and visitors both alike are showing compassion and real humanity and thats important to remember. Now we have a police car coming by and here he goes. Ken, one of the stories that struck me, you were talking about, is just like where the good thats coming out in the sheer panic of everything on sunday night when people were running for cover and trying to get out of that concert venue, they were losing their wallets, their cell phones, people had to leave their cars behind. Were you talking about the story about a you were talking about a story about a man who found cell phones and getting them back to their owners. Tell us about that. Reporter right. Savannah was running and lost her cell phone in the chaos that was happening. So she found out later that somebody had found her phone and collected other phones that had been dropped and lost in the panic as people were leaving. And kept them. And as people called those phones, he would answer them. He would keep them charged and tell them, i have that persons phone. And i will get it back to you if you want to come pick it up or ill take it to you or to the hospital or wherever and he kept everyones phone and returned them. And i understand there were a number of phones, i dont have the exact number, but savannah told her father i have your daughters phone, im ready to give it back. When she got her phone back and looked at her messages, she had 180 messages from people who were trying to find out what happened to her and how she was doing. So again, another sign that, you know, for the most part, people are good. Well, and speaking of good, talk a little bit more about what airlines and the hotels are doing for the families of the victims. Reporter we told you yesterday we knew that the bellagio and a couple of other the station hotels here in las vegas and i think greg has that look like he wants to turn around so well show you more of the strip, the excalibur, the new york, new york and all the way down looking north towards the heart of the strip, but now that number of hotels has really grown. There are probably at least a dozen if not more hotels that have jumped into it and are now offering free rooms to family members of victims of this shooting. So anyone who comes to las vegas and needs help finding a loved one, reconnecting with a loved one, they will put you up at no cost. And also, a number of airlines are doing the same thing. So for those people who need travel accommodations, Airlines Offering flights to the families of the victims. So this town is really coming together and, you know, i have been watching the local news reports here, as well. And theres a genuine concern among the folks of las vegas that they are going to be stained and tarnished by this shooting and they are trying to do everything they can to make sure that people feel safe and feel welcome when they come to las vegas. They dont want anything like this to happen again. Nobody does anywhere. But in a city that depends so heavily on tourism, for people to feel like they cant come here and be safe, that could destroy the entire economy here so people in las vegas want people outside to know that theyre doing everything they can to make the [ technical difficulties ] ken wayne, thank you so much. Happening now, people are gathering in concord tonight for a prayer vigil on gun violence. These are live pictures from that vigil which was organized by the mount diablo peace and justice center. Organizers said the event is not just an opportunity to pray for the victims families. Its also an opportunity to resolve to act in the fight to prevent Mass Shootings such as the massacre in las vegas. [ music ] 89 of republicans and democrats are in favor of restricting gun ownership for the mentally ill. But not this gang. They voted against both of those things. So with all due respect that was jimmy kimmel calling out the 56 u. S. Senators who days after the pulse nightclub shooting in orlando voted against a bill to expand background checks for gun purchases. From late night tv to social media to capitol hill, the debate over gun control is once again part of the national conversation. Reporter the almost ancient debate sparked by sundays mass shooting on the vegas strip is over gun control and how it relates to the Second Amendment. Santa Clara University law professor [ nonenglish language ] what the Second Amendment protects is a core right to possess a firearm for self defense. Reporter but Stephen Paddock had a hotel room filled with high power assault rifles, some firing hundreds of rounds per minute. The scene of carnage on tv much of monday has some gun owners saying existing laws need to be toughened. Need to be more gun control laws in other states, not california. California is very strict. Other states like nevada and utah, they are not strict. The Second Amendment doesnt protect the ability to have guns that have significant killing power large magazines or semi automatic capabilities. There was a mad man behind a firearm. Reporter these two men say they see and feel an antigun surge after every mass shooting incident. Friends since their teens, the pair adds personal flair to firearms from pistols to assault rifles. Both say more laws for appealing or amounting the Second Amendment isnt the answer. If you take the weapons they still are going to do what they want to do. If they take a knife start stabbing people in the crowd, are you going to ban knives . I worry that our infringement on our rights comes into play against firearm owners. Reporter congress has banned assault weapons before. But that law lapsed several years ago. Now vendors and users of the product will wait to see what happens. In the san jose studio, jesse gary, ktvu fox 2 news. We want to go back and show you some of the incredibly compelling Police Body Cam footage from the shooting in las vegas. The Police Department just released this composite in the last 20 minutes. Go that way at this point they are still trying to figure out where the rounds are coming from. [ gunfire ] once again, what youre looking at here is the first body camera footage from sunday nights massacre that left 58 people dead and more than 500 others wounded. It was just released about 30 minutes ago from authorities in las vegas. It just gives you some idea of the chaos that was unfolding as officers there outside the mandalay bay [ crosstalk ] one of our officers gets shot. That was the undersheriff narrating what were seeing here. As you heard, at this point the police still arent sure where the gunshots are coming from. These are just several clips that they strung together and released for the first time tonight. There are hours and hours of body camera footage that will presumably be released in the coming days. It shows people coming up not knowing what to do and the officers yelling at them to get down and some cases this is what we are looking at here was an officer standing over a woman to protect her. One of the officers was shot. So it shows you the chaos and panic from when the shooting started at 10 08 p. M. Sunday night. It shows you once again police running to danger while everyone else runs away from danger. Thats what authorities do. And they did a great job in las vegas. Well be right back.
