The police are looking for the individual driver of the silver sedan that hit and killed the wellknown Grocery Store owner in the city. It happened at 2 am this morning outside of the San Francisco wholesale Produce Market on jerrold avenue off of interstate 280 along the waterfront. Alex savidge is reporting from one of the stores that the victim owned. Reporter friends and colleagues say he was a hard working and wellliked grocer in San Francisco, a husband and father of two, and Gus Vardakastanis has own this Guss Community Market at 17th street and harrison and also owned two other neighborhood markets in San Francisco. He was killed in the hitand run crash that happened around 2 am outside of the San Francisco wholesale Produce Market and he was purchasing produce this morning from the wholesalers. He was crossing jerrold avenue and was struck and killed by speeding car. The driver of the car drove away according to the police and the driver remains on the run this morning. Reporter the police are investigating whether the police in the car that hit Gus Vardakastanis were running from the scene of a shooting that happened a few blocks away around the same time this morning. The Police Believe the car involved in the deadly crash is thought to be a silver four door sedan with likely front end damage, and likely a damaged windshield as well. In the hospital. One person was able to escape the fire on their own and calls of the fire is under investigation. The coast guard will be sending divers into the beta to investigate how the containers fell off of the cargo ship. Six of them sank and the water is at least 50 foot deep in the area. Bylaw people in the field must physically check on the clients at least once a year. Reporter have you been able to do that with all of your clients . No. It is impossible. Reporter the Contra Costa County is significantly backlogged even though it has far fewer cases than the neighboring counties, more than one third of the reassessments are behind schedule. Reporter is that acceptable . Absolutely not. Reporter the director overseas the ihss program. We dont have enough social workers to do the assessments necessary. Reporter the Public Programs have been hit hard by the bay area crisis and the boom they were not prepared for. Several years ago the state gave contra costa and other counties a chance to hire more staff. Alameda took advantage but this county did not feel the staff in the same white. Reporter was it a mistake to not approach the staffing when you could . I am not sure about that now. Hindsight is 2020 we cannot roll back the clock. They say they cannot. You are responsible to help these families. We do a lot of extra work. Every day or month that goes by that person is living unsafely in their home. Reporter ihss is the largest taxpayerfunded program and it appears that contra costa is particularly failing. Contra costa appears to be falling further and further behind. Reporter are peoples lives at risk due to the problem . Yes. People sometimes hurt themselves, or fall because they dont get the care that they need. I think this is a dangerous situation. The issues facing Contra Costa County, other counties are not far behind. Reporter it is impacting families that say they cannot wait any longer. This father had something to say. It appears the county missed out on the chance to increase the staff when they were supposed to. Understand one woman says you cannot roll back the clock but sometimes you have to learn from your mistakes but how with a help these people looking forward . Contra costa has to go to the state to propose a new way to run a pilot program. They say the way the state is having them run it, and they say they have been particularly hit hard by this. They want to propose to the state to run Apollo Program because the way the state makes them run it is not working for them and they say they cannot afford it. So they are pointing fingers. I asked the director point blank if it was a mistake that contra costa did not staff up when they could but she said of course hindsight is 2020. She said she was not in a position to take on the program because what if the government rollback the program and suddenly they cannot continue to pay the extra people they had hired.
