Two major groups representing the Health Insurance industry came out today against a lastditch attempt by republicans to repeal and replace obamacare. Insurers are warning that the grahamcassidy named for the authors in the senate, they say that the bill would create chaos and uncertainty in the insurance market. A short time ago Heather Holmes spoke to a prominent bay area republican who disagrees. She is in our newsroom with the details. Reporter frank and julie, as he sees it the former chairman of the Republican Party in california Tom Del Beccaro says the Graham Cassidy bill is the best option we have because it gives power back to individual states but as you said the number of groups opposed to the bill is growing. Take a look. Today two trade groups representing the insurance market, the Blue Cross Blue Shield association, and americas Health Insurance plans, said they oppose the bill. Already the American Medical Association and the American Hospital association as well as a Bipartisan Group of 11 governors oppose this last ditch republican attempt to repeal the Affordable Care act. Now, the bill undoes the Medicaid Expansion which is at the heart of obamacare, providing subsidies to help people afford insurance. Under this new bill, states would have to formulate their own plan. Also, despite assurances from the president and others that this bill maintains protections for those with pre existing conditions, states could also apply for waivers allowing insurers to charge more to people with pre existing conditions. Now, he said there are three options before us, single payer plan, which Bernie Sanders proposed which is supported by senator Kamala Harris of california. Second to do nothing. Or third, the grahamcassidy bill. It allows the smaller states to do what they would like to do, mostly red states that dont want obamacare, and it allows the large states like california and new york to continue on their current path to single payer. But the big unknown is how many people would be priced out of the market. The reason thats unknown is that the Congressional Budget Office has not yet issued its report on how many people would be affected or would lose their insurance under this plan. And the cbo doesnt intend to have the numbers before next week when congress would vote on the bill. Republicans are racing against a september 30th deadline it pass the bill during this fiscal year under a budget procedure which enables them to get through the legislation through with a simple majority 51 votes. Heather, speaking about that vote, do republicans have the votes to pass the bill . Reporter not just yet. But it is still very possible. The same senators are in play as last time. Lisa murkowski of alaska and Susan Collins of maine are up in the air. John mccain of arizona is leaning towards a yes vote. You will recall he cast the deciding vote last time but is also Close Friends with one of the authors of the bill lindsay graham. But this time rand paul of kentucky is voting no. He says it just redistributes obamacare spending and isnt a true repeal. So there is a path to 51 votes. Its just still unclear if they can get there. All right. Heather holmes in our newsroom tonight, thank you. The university of california says it will provide the Berkeley Campus with 300,000 for Security Associated with the planned free speech week event starting sunday. Organizers from a group called berkeley patriot have invited a number of speakers including right wing author milo yiannopoulos. All the events will take place at outdoors at sproul plaza. A cal spokesman told fox news today that depending on whether the speakers actually show up, the cost for security could far exceed 300,000.
