the trick as far as keeping violence from happening. now to the speech itself. reaction from those who watched.>> reporter: the main floor holds a little more than 1000 people. it was mostly full. some people said they came from as far away as san jose or sacramento. not everyone who was there was a fan. over all despite the differences of opinion the discourse was civil. >> ladies and gentlemen mr. ben shapiro.>> reporter: the speech started late. once he got started he spoke without being interrupted. except for cheers and applause. he made provocative statements.>> there are students that do want to hear differing abuse. don't want to be told they can only hear one of you. who don't believe the first amendment should die under the birkenstocks of a bunch of anarchist communist pieces of garbage.>> reporter: he was not a white supremacist. he says he is not a supporter of president trump. stephen and. he blasted the audit right and the left from what he calls campus thuggery that he says discriminates against white men. that everyone agreed with his views. a line formed the q&a session. he invited opponents to speak first. security was tight.>> it is hard to hold an event like this when there is so many strong opinions. they did a great job.>> reporter: the speech and questions lasted 90 minutes. some people agreed with him. others did not. most just wanted to hear the dialogue. >> we can get to a brighter moment if we stopped identifying as numbers and groups. and see each other's as individuals made in god's image. >> most of his political positions are well thought. i liked it. i was a little unhappy with ideological inefficiencies he had. generally i was happy with the level of unity and openness of conversation. >> people put in a lot of work to make this happen. we are happy all of that work has culminated in what has been a successful event.>> reporter: the security inside the hall was just as tight as it was on the perimeter that you saw earlier. we did not see any fights. no yelling or anything like that. certainly differences of opinion. it ended with people feeling like get exercise free speech without being persecuted. uc berkeley officials say they spent $600,000 on security just for tonight. they held a briefing after shapiro finished. they expressed satisfaction the security measures appeared to have paid off. pretty much all campus leaders -- was at the university tonight including the chancellor. i think it would be safe and accurate to say there was a sense of relief. and satisfaction the event border security. the president met -- wants to make sure it is a part of any deal. he is the ultimate dealmaker.>> trump says negotiation would not include funding for his planned wall along the mexican border. that will come later. he warned democrats not to obstruct him. president trump reportedly told attorney general jeff sessions to resign after the appointment of robert mueller. the new york times reports trump berated and humiliated sessions. during an oval office meeting in july. the president was reportedly outraged over his decision to recuse himself from the investigation into russia's meddling in the election. the new york times reports the president unleashed a string of insults at the attorney general calling him disloyal. and eight at a day care has been arrested for sexual assault. san jose police arrested the 18- year-old man at jumping up learning circles for touching a nine-year-old during an afterschool program. police have not released the name of the man. they believe he was a minor at the time. they are now working with the daycare to see if there could be more victims. oakland released a video today taken at the ghost ship warehouse two years before the fire that killed 86. police officer hector chavez was investigating a noise complaint in march 2015. he was told people were being charged me five dollars to get into an unpermitted party. he pushed the door on the officers leg. after 20 minutes the officer said he was going to take action. >> when i come back i'm going to give you a fine. it is going to be a very expensive fine. i'm still going to make sure the city knows about this place. i'm going to talk to the owner as well.>> the officer road an incident report but did not cite anyone. it is not clear if other departments were notified. police are now required to report any illegal parties they come across to their supervisor and to notify other city agencies. a homicide investigation that has been cold for 30 years. the responsible for the death of maria weed hopper. >> on november 15, 1990 232- year-old woman was jogging alone on the trail when she was raped and strangled. her truck was located park and inspiration point. her body was discovered a mile away along the trail. >> there were witnesses who recalled seeing a suspicious mail sitting on a bench and inspiration point. he was smoking cigarettes one after the other. those cigarette butts were collected in the dna matched the dna found on the victim. we knew the person was the suspect. this was the original schedule that was released said to be a white male in his 20s. for decades they tried matching the dna to a man fitting the description to no avail. recently they thought -- they sought a dna technology company and virginia. they specialize in phenotyping which enables them to predict physical appearance and and -- and ancestry from dna evidence. that help them narrow their suspect list. >> we do have persons of interest. one of the persons is dead. the other person no longer lives in the country. that is consistent with what our theory is.>> reporter: getting closure for her family is paramount. they are working to ensure the killer doesn't take another innocent life. they had profiled -- profilers examine the case in the crime. the suspect is likely to commit another heinous act. there is a possibility the suspect is either dead or in another country. police say they are having trouble tracking him down. coming of the bay area's homelessness crisis. why some say rent control laws on the books are contributing to the problem. >> landlords and tenants take the current housing law has contributed to at least the rental crisis.>> reporter: the cost of hawkins housing act which governs ordinance of. rent control laws prevent landlords from keeping up with the rising maintenance costs over time. he says eviction laws make landlords afraid to rent to low income tenants. the eviction process is so difficult. some tenants don't feel laws protect them enough.>> these are written two decades ago. they are written before we experience the intensity of this crisis. no one predicted there would be such intense activity with respect to evictions. and landlords and tenants fighting each other.>> reporter: developers are more equipped to survive and thrive under current laws. for small owners. >> you are risking homelessness if someone does not pay you rent. we have to update the laws. have to rewrite them. but also a good idea to bring in social workers and economies.>> we have activists on both sides but if
