Uncertainties. One uncertainty involves china. Its amajor u. S. Trading partner mired in its own tanking stock market. Cut backs on major spending projects are beginning to affect some major u. S. Businesses, such as caterpillar and john deere. Chinas Consumer Market could crater, impacting the likes of apple. Will the u. S. Federal reserve rate raise Interest Rates next month because the u. S. Economy is in the good and sustained recovery. One set of data says raise it and get it over with. Another set of data says you got to be out of your mind. Reporter plus, a plunge in oil prices particularly impacts Oil Companies. Worry about oil is compounded about concerns that a possible worldwide recession will decrease demand, harming Oil Companies even more. With morsellers of stock than buyers, prices fell off a cliff this week. Nobody wants to buy until they know the coin flip is going to turn out. Reporter now, before you consider panicking, consider this. The market tanked 13 in may of 2010 on worries about europe and reacted very negatively, almost 1000 points, when uncle sam announced tapering off the money that it was pouring into the economy back in 2013, only to see in both cases the market go on to set new records. Tom vacar, ktvu fox 2news. Tom, you touched on this in your piece. But can you explain the connection for people between what goes on in china and u. S. Markets . Reporter well, especially when you consider exports, we sell all kinds of stuff to china. Iphones. Cars. All kinds of materials, all kinds of materials to them. If suddenly that market goes soft, that affects u. S. Jobs, u. S. Income and affects the United States in general. And on the other way, if less products are coming over, then theres a scarcity in some of the products literally going up in price. It is a very complicated thing. But the bottom thing, it would be good for United States if china keeps humming along. For someone who owns stocks, stockbrokers say there will be ups and downs. Just hold tight. Everything will be fine in the long run. Agree or disagree . Reporter you have to agree with that. I remember back when the recession came. I did nothing with my 401 k , not a thing. Other than just keep adding money to it. And what happened was because i ignored it, i left it alone, what happened was it continued to grow, didnt make a whole lot of money, but didnt lose a whole lot of money. By the time the whole thing was over, i had all of my money and quite some. And most people for the long term will find thats exactly what happens. And this is by no means the beginning of a recession just yet. So lets not make it more than it really is, which right now is a correction well within the direction level. Bottom line here, dont panic. Tom vacar, thank you. The jobs picture in california is improving, as the Unemployment Rate declined slightly. The Unemployment Rate now stands at 6. 2 , down a tenth of a point. A year ago, it was at 7. 4 . The state is reporting that some 80,000 jobs were added in july. Thats the biggest increase in three years. The gains came in fields like construction, transportation, financial, and education. Here in the bay area, more than 24,000 jobs were added last month. New developments now in this Early Morning warehouse fire on merit island. The investigation has just begun. Firefighters say its too dangerous to go in there, so they will keep an eye on things. Hopefully the smoldering spots wilburn themselves out. It is nothing compared to the flames that ripped through here last night. Massive flames lit up the night sky for hours. Plumes of smoke filled the air and firefighters from various agencies worked nonstop to get a handle on this threealarm blaze. By sunrise, it was clear alco iron and metal was a total loss. Because of the size of this building, it could have been burning inside this building for a long time before it was noticed. Reporter the battalion chief says the fire covered 60,000 square feet. He says the smoke is not toxic to those nearby. We did have air quality out here, did sampling, deemed not to be hazardous. Reporter the wind quickly cleared out the smoke, carrying embers with it as far as a quarter mile away. This isnt the first time alco has had a fire. One year ago, their scrap yard lit up behind a building. Campbell says that fire was caused by a machine picking up metals and the heat generated by it caused a spark. There was particulating everywhere and it ignited all at one time. Reporter this fire has made the conditions too dangerous for firefighters. They wont know the cause likely until next week. The Security Guard heard a loud boom and saw the smoke and the fire. Thats pretty much all they gave us. Reporter fire inspectors say they wont be able to go inside the building to gather clues until monday. We also want to mention we reached out to solano county. They say they last inspected the building in january, but found no major violations. We also reached out to alco. A spokesperson sent me a statement saying they are thankful everyone was okay and they will set up a temporary location next week to serve their customers. Julie . But the site there was destroyed. What do they plan to do . Will they rebuild in the same location or do we know yet . Reporter we dont have an answer to that yet. They are still trying to gather information. Were not sure if they will come back to this location. We dont know where that temporary spot will be. Lot of Unanswered Questions at this point. Obviously, things they will work through in the coming days. Christina, thank you. Firefighters are gaining ground on that 2500acre fire in the hills east of livermore. Its been burning for two days through dry vegetation around tesla and coral hollow roads. Calfire says the blaze has stopped spreading and is now 70 contained. Most of the fire zone is just charred land, but there are still active fires out there. An unoccupied home that was going to be demolished was destroyed in the fire. Still no word on a cause. Another deadline for officials working to keep the raiders in oakland. Today, the main developer must submit a detailed plan to build a coliseum city. New at 5 00 tonight, ktvus john sasaki is live at raiders headquarters with the latest. Reporter julie, while there is optimism coming from city hall about the raiders staying in oakland, officials are still short on details about how they will make it happen. Were going to take all that material and analysis and be reviewing it. Reporter but she would share no financial details of the plan or what it will take to make the teams happy. Im not prepared to say anything else at this time. Thats proprietary. Reporter for the raiders, the problem is that both san diego and st. Louis have offered the chargers and rams respectively hundreds of millions of dollars to stay in those cities. What does oakland offer . Oakland is putting together its best package to keep the raiders in town. We are currently discussing that with the raiders. Do you feel like what youre offering can compete with 300 to 400 million . Im not prepared to say at this point. I think the trouble with the raiders, oakland issue is that both the city of oakland and the county of alameda are pretty close to broke. Reporter stanford economist roger knoll has studied stadiums and their Financial Impact on cities extensively and says theres just no way for an investment of hundreds of millions of dollars to pay off. Stadiums cost two or three times as much as would be justified by the amount of Economic Activity that goes on inside the stadium or even the amount of ancillary Economic Activity that they create. Reporter knoll adds that just as likely as the raiders moving to l. A. Is another surprising situation. So youre saying rams possibly to l. A. And raiders possibly to st. Louis . Yes. Thats a very likely outcome. Reporter but oakland city councilman told me by phone today last month he was almost convinced the raiders were ready to leave. Now he is much more optimistic they will stay. Julie . When are city and county leaders expected to review the latest plan . Reporter both the city council and the board of supervisors will be getting the plan sometime mid to late next month. Thats probably when well get a chance to look at the details as well. Ann rubin, ktvu fox 2news. Well, the weekend is just about here. Looks like we have pretty nice weather out there, with no major warmups or cooldowns out there. We still have lots of low clouds and fog. Im in the Weather Center and we have the fog out there, a big factor at the coast and near the bay. Temperatures have been capping off over the past few days. The key headline, no major heat in our forecast. Right now on the satellite maps, you can see the fog, the marine layer, i believe in fact, telling me we have the fog out there. You can see the low clouds still banked up near the immediate shoreline. A bit of a breeze with winds around 15 to 25 miles an hour. I believe we have bill martin standing by, tossing to him right now . There he is. Bill, the last update we had, you were off not on there, but right now you are on the president ial yacht. Must be quite a little visit and revisit of history out there. Reporter well, it is. Im a history nut, as you know. Glad you didnt call it a boat. Its a ship, right . So this is franklin delanors yacht, the potomac. Look at these bench seats here. In leather. Why do you think they are so long like this . Mark, are you still there . Tell me, tell me. Reporter okay. The reason, because of his handicap. His legs werent working well. So he didnt want to look weak around the press or around guests. So other people would sit with their legs out and it would give him the appearance that everything was business as usual. I want to come back. I got dominique here. Were going to come into this is the president s private quarters, right . Welcome to the president s bedroom. This was where president roosevelt stayed when he was on the potomac. Very small bed. Eleanor did not spend the night here. She did come a number of times, but it was more of a boys club kind of ship, for fishing and talking to heads of state. This was the president s bed. Reporter when you say heads of state, he would entertain serious heads of state out here . Oh, yes. He entertained king george and Queen Elizabeth on the first time that they ever came to the United States. He entertained the crown prince of denmark. And switzerland as well. Bill, look forward to that during the 6 00 hour. So much history, so much to learn. I was looking at the website. I read that Elvis Presley was one of the owners of that boat as well. Amazing history there. As far as the low clouds and fog, if you were to take bill off the boat, you would have a big deck of low clouds and fog over his head right now, because the fog is already pushing back into the bay. You can see over pacifica, over the golden gate bridge, basically socked in over the immediate coastline. Typical summertime weather pattern with no major heat in the forecast. Remember just last weekend we had tripledigit temperatures, forecasting that. Looking pretty mild heading into saturday and sunday. As far as current numbers out there, santa rosa checking in at 73. Concord right now at 80 degrees. Livermore, upper 70s. San jose, 74. San francisco, 61. Heres our live camera toward the oakland estuary. I was talking about the fog overhead. Basically already a solid deck out there. The marine layer has been expanding in depth. Basically over the past few days, up above 2000 feet, 2500 feet. That coupled with that pretty strong onshore breeze, probably already felt it, thats transporting that marine air inland at least for the morning hours. Overnight lows, first thing tomorrow morning, in the 50s and 60s, with a solid deck of overcast for your saturday morning near the coast and right around the bay. Were between this area of low pressure up here to our north, this area of High Pressure backing off over the past few days. So with that, no major changes. Mid60s
