The flames spread quickly and cars that were stopped for traffic were caught in the middle of that wildfire. Fire crews got everyone out of their vehicles in what turned out to be a frightening and chaotic scene. 20 cars were destroyed and two people suffered minor injuries. Reporter heather, Officials Say what happened in Southern California is an unusual occurrence, but you can never say never in terms of it being a possibility here. Fastmoving flames torched cars and sent people running. It started over at that end, i believe, and then it slowly started to move forward. Then it jumped the lane. Reporter the dramatic images coming from Southern California, a reminder of how the drought is creating some of the worst fire conditions. Could that happen here in the bay area . Well, certainly, especially considering the drought and dry conditions. Most of Northern California now is very dry. Reporter battalion chief of the Oakland Fire Department says every circumstance is different, depending on winds and vegetation. But areas like highway 13 in oakland and highway 1 on the coast have similar topography to highway 15, the main thoroughfare between los angeles and las vegas. Fridays fair raged uphill. The highway was caught in the middle, and those cars stopped due to slowed traffic. Trying to get closer. Just panic. Reporter for some, the incident has similarities to the Oakland Hills fire of 1991. Parts of highway 24 saw abandoned cars. Not because of traffic, but because people stopped and left their cars. Oakland hills fire had tremendous wind, very hot and very dry that day, much like in Southern California yesterday. Reporter he says if youre ever caught in a similar situation, what you should do all comes down to knowing your surroundings and knowing the quickest exit route. If youre beyond the emergency, keep moving for the sake of others behind you. If youre before it, avoid it. And if youre caught in the middle, do what you can to find safety. If you find yourself in an area where theres vegetation thats dry below you and vegetation thats dry above you, youre in an area where you wouldnt want to get caught by fire. Judging from what ive seen and read about the incident in the Southern California, they did the right thing because they got away from their vehicles, which were starting to catch fire, and i have heard of no injuries, certainly no fatalities. Reporter officials in california were concerned with the use of drones during yesterdays wildfire because it delayed water drops by 20 minutes. Officials say if you have a drone over wildfire, youre asked to land it safely so firefighters can do their jobs to protect the public and property. Good advice there. Boy, those pictures are certainly dramatic. Thank you. More than a hundred firefighters, meantime, are working on the pine fire in the Angeles National forest in arcadia. More than 300 people have now been evacuated. Almost half of them were deaf children at a campground. The flames broke out last night. The fire has burned more than 200 acres so far and its only about 5 contained. Severe weather in Southern California forced at least two flights to make Emergency Landings. Southwest flight from oakland to burbank made an Emergency Landing this afternoon at burbank after the plane was hit by lightning. An Alaska Airlines jet heading from lax to washington, dc turned back to the airport after that plane was also hit by lightning. Alaska airlines spokeswoman says passengers aboard didnt feel anything when the lightning hit and that commercial airlines are designed to withstand Lightning Strikes. Ken, very active today in Southern California. We have the flow tap into what is now a Tropical Storm, Tropical Storm dolores, at least the remnant moisture. You can see a good portion of Southern California, lots of coverage here on the radar and some thunderstorms. You get the idea here of the motion heading in this direction. So far, the bay area is dry, but this will be changing over the next 24 hours. Closer look at the radar, down to our south, closer to los angeles, look at the Lightning Strikes approaching Santa Barbara county, around Santa Barbara, thunderstorms going off here. In fact, in this region, take a look at this one grouping here and do a tally. Looks like we have about 67 Lightning Strikes with the one cell. As we expand the view once again on the radar, this moisture will be approaching the bay area over the next 24 hours. As a result, we will be talking about some shower chances here and the possibility of some thunderstorms and of course one lightning bolt can change the whole scene in terms of fire danger. The winchester 1873 rifle was discovered in the Great Basin National park, standing upright, propped against a tree. And no one knows how the rifle stayed standing for so long. The rifle was sent to the Cody Firearms Museum in wyoming. The guns wood was stabilized and the entire thing was even x rayed at a hospital under the patient name rifle. Museum workers determined it was made in 1882, but there are no records to show who owned it.
