The demonstrators were arrested tonight after taking over a vacant building in berkeley. They took over the building owned by the university of california campus yesterday. Kron fours dan thorn live in berkeley after police cleared that building. Dan. Yeah, thats right, ken, a number of Police Officers still on scene here blocking off the roads surrounding that building thats known as a. And ahead, its an abandoned building. The police here still setting up some barricades. They cleared those people out. They cleared the building out here. They were calling it a crime scene and they wanted this to end. Protesters facing off with Police Outside the end ahead building near uc berkeley. Officers cleared out the propalestinian protesters occupying the event in space thursday night. At least a dozen of those protesters were taken away in handcuffs. The now possibly facing charges of vandalism, trespassing and destruction property. Police called to take over vacant building a crime scene people beyond the Police Barriers chanted to free palestine. A recent graduate of uc berkeley says hes all for the protests but was not fully on board with the occupation. I mixed opinions about this, but im proposing, you know, i think theyre doing a good, good work here. Michael, the Investments Mission they have going at one point protesters did get close with officers trying to move the perimeter back, but it did not escalate from there. And as you can see, theres a lot fewer officers out here. Not any protesters. There were a number of them that were out here before. And just give you an idea as to where we are in terms of location and university of california Berkeley Sproul hall is a few blocks away. That encampment doesnt exist uc officials believe that the people that took over the and ahead building were not associated with the sprawl whole situation because there had been some sort of agreement between the administration and the protesters that encampment in terms of divesting from israel. They came to some sort of resolution. So its unclear exactly who these people were that took over this building. But again, it had been cleared out just a few hours ago. At sonoma state students and faculty are responding after that universitys president. Was placed on administrative leave for making an agreement with the protesters. There. The chancellor of the California State University system says president mike lees agreement was made without appropriate approvals. The agreement, including divesting from israel. Some students are now frustrated. Find out to agreement led to the president being placed on administrative leave. I support the president they green months against genocide. Kind of crazy. How a statement about lake ending genocide is like. Crazy, crazy thing that has put someone on leave. The agreement laid out in threepage letter was declared a win by student activists. But it also drew some backlash. The nature of the program being in southwest asia, north African Studies was made without consulting with subject matter. Experts in the middle east of whom i consider myself. One of them is done a really good job up until now as president. I think that he did not handle this this situation. Well, but i personally would hope youd be given another chance. No word tonight from the university on how long president lee will be placed on leave. Graduation is set for saturday after demonstrations and the ucla and uc irvine in violently, a Union Representing about 48 1000 academic workers in the uc system voted to authorize a strike. Now, the vote does not guarantee a strike, but it could happen. The man convicted of attacking paul pelosi, david de pap set to learn his fate in federal court. Federal prosecutors are asking a judge for a 40 year prison sentence. The path was convicted last year for the attempted kidnapping and assault of a federal official. This was in october of 2022. During the trial, pap admitted that he broke into the pelosi home with the full intent of Holding Nancy Pelosi hostage at the state capitol. An allclear has been given after the building known as the swing space was briefly evacuated due to a threat. The building is home to the offices of the governor and lawmakers in downtown sacramento. People were told to leave the building after they found a suspicious package that contained a threat claiming it included anthrax and hour after the evacuation. Investigators say that they tested the white powder and confirmed it was not dangerous. Governor gavin newsom was not in the building at the time. Hes on a trip out of the country in italy and investigation is underway to determine who sent that package. It was a busy day for lawmakers at the capitol today was known as suspense day. Thats where lawmakers look at more than 1000 bills and decided which ones are going to move forward and the legislative process. No. Well, vicki, 1009 bills were up for decision today, including some that would require the state to spend tens of thousands of dollars. 60 1 of the proposed bills made it through the assembly and Senate Appropriations committees. Among the advanced bills is a 10,000 per day fine on oil wells producing less than 15 barrels per day. While the bill does face opposition from the oil industry, the democratic lawmaker behind it says he is moving forward. But i talked to the oil industry, dont often do about the stripper wells. They told me the Environmental Impact is the same for low producing wells and high producing wells. So why are we allowing these low producing wells to even exist . That la Assembly Member had another bill advanced as well. The second one would enshrine the right to clean air and water into the california constitution on the republican side, a proposal to classify the solicitation of a child for as a felony advanced as well. Among the killed bills was one that would have created a medicare for all types system. In california. Another bill would have required employers to provide workers with a right to disconnect once theyre off the clock and another killed would have a limited fixed utility bill charges to reparations bills, including Housing Assistance and property tax assistance for descendants of slaves. Also failed. The area lawmaker buffy wicks says some tough decisions had to be made. Its a challenging budget time. And so we needed to be responsible, responsible taxpayers money. So thats why we had to make some tough calls today. It happened on in october on Market Street in the city. It led to the dmv to suspend cruises. Driverless permits. Investigators say the cruise car dragged a woman 20 feet after she was hit by another car. Fortune magazine reports the settlement is between 8 12 million dollars. Garbage and recycling rate and san jose may go up again. The city is proposing a 4 rate increase a month for singlefamily service and 2 for Multi Service family service. A spokesperson for the city says that the rate increases are up for the rising cost of living adjustments and operational fees, a public hearing and a vote on the matter set for next month. The mayor talked about the fact that in the latest count, homelessness grow by 9 in oakland. Those numbers released just this week, but at least the rate is slowing down. 9 does not sound as drastic when you consider the citys Homeless Population grew. 47 from 2017 to 2019. And 24 between 2019 and and so this 9 increase is actually a significant success shows that we are, you know, closing some of these homelessness issues. Of course, theres still so much to be done. I we can walk out the street still see encampments. And so thats our job is never done until everyone is brought inside in our streets. A and clear of encampments. She says oakland is working on making modular housing permanent and that federal housing help is coming in forms that are easier to when i advocate at the federal level for a voucher ys, were advocating for playspace voucher so that its easier for people to redo bc the section 8 vouchers that they dont have to go and find. A land where that would take it, that its attached to housing units. As for the improved crime numbers recently released one number not being celebrated is the fact that residential robbery is up 110 . That translates to 42 home robberies so far this year compared to 20 in the same period last year. You know, i know that its like its it sounds scary when you say 110 increase. But mind you, you know, you come from already a very small amount of numbers for you today. Well, a place thats already been pounded by heavy rain just a week or so ago. They had over 12 inches of rain in some parts of the eastern half of texas. And now you get all this rain on top of that. Theyre going to be dealing with here for days to come. You see the storm as it was dubbed really developing this afternoon pushing on through. There you go right afternoon hours. Very strong thunderstorms coming through and well, that was a dangerous storm setting itself up and now the damage has been done and theyre not quite done with the storm system just yet. You can see that track of damage, reports thunderstorms and even a tornado on the houston area. Even one new orleans tonight, as weve seen a more those storms continue to track on by behind that, weve had gusts of some of those storms producing gusts almost 60 miles per hour. Reports of hail as well. And theyre not done with it. Weve got flash flood warnings posted across a good part of a texas into louisiana as well. And that continues to be an issue is weve got all these rivers that are already swollen from previous storms. And now you have tremendous amounts of rain coming down on top of that. Theyre going to be dealing with flooding in those areas over the next few days. That doesnt even count storms that could be headed their way after norland still seeing some activity just pushing just to the east now. But that is a very strong storm. The deep south, again, going to see another round, possibly of Severe Weather for tomorrow. All right. Lets get you back out toward the west. Paying for the care and transportation was a big topic of discussion at todays board of supervisors meeting last month. Mayor breed asked supervisors to pass a resolution that would allow various city departments to begin raising money from private entities, candidate for mayor joseph. It argues that money going towards animals is less useful than funding programs that support youth and programs that help unhoused residents. So this is about prioritizing our future. This is about prioritizing our children. Over pandas. And if we can rally to fund a home for pandas, we certainly can rally to raise money for essential programs that impact every single corner of this city.
