Oakland this morning happened just before 8 right near 98th and cherokee avenues about a block away from Bishop Odowd High School kron. 4 s Charles Clifford has the latest. Well, here in oakland on thursday, 2 people were taken to the hospital after their vehicle was caught in an exchange of gunfire. Around 7. 45. Thursday morning, a woman driving her daughter to school was caught in the exchange of gunfire here near 98 and cherokee. According to her husband, the woman tried to drive away, but their suv was struck by another car and flipped onto its side. The woman and her daughter managed to crawl away from their car. The driver of the other vehicle flat. Pretty scary knowing that she was in his accident. Everything according to the womans husband who drove to the scene, she and their daughter going to be ok, but were taken to the hospital just as a precaution or my daughter actually in the car. While the gunfire was going. Yeah. From what i was told, the other people jump to another vehicle and drove at this point. Its unclear why shots were fired or by whom. Oakland Police Department is investigating but so far have not identified any suspects or motive. Now, this incident did occur near Bishop Odowd High School, but the school was not impacted in any way. Anyone with information is asked to reach out to the oakland Police Department. But for now in the east bay, Charles Clifford kron, d news. And the city of oakland is embracing some positive trends when it comes to crime. The most recent Police Statistics are showing Violent Crime has dropped in several key categories. Notably homicides and assaults kron fours terisa stasio tells us what the city is crediting for this drop and also what areas the city hall wants to continue to improve on. Violent crime down in the city of oakland, i think its definitely too early for us to be celebrating where were not resting on these early numbers. Were feeling encouraged by the numbers. Doctor holly joshi is the chief of violence prevention of the city of oakland. Take a look at the latest data released by the city. The chart shows homicides are down by 17 in 2024. Compared to 2023. Assaults dropped by 4 and assault with firearms dropped 21 . Wright was down. 21 overall Violent Crime is down in oakland by 33 . Definitely attributing to implementation of the ceasefire strategy, which is not new to a client. We successfully implemented to strategy from 2012 to 2019 and had significant reductions in Violent Crime across the city. Doctor joshi credit, several programs including ceasefire coming back into the fold. The Police Departments side of that relentless 13 looks like enforcement. But the department of violence preventions relentless pursuit of those individuals looks like getting them on track. Inspiring the Behavioral Changes needed to prevent further victimization engagement in violence and incarceration and essentially offering them a second choice to a second option. And the opportunity to actually get out of the cycle of violence that many of them feel trapped into. The data is not all positive, though. Robberies are ticking upward since the beginning of the year. Robbers have climbed 11 and residential robberies up 100 and 18 . The reality is is its where the people live. Police responding to a report of a shooting at the laquinta inn on south front road near 5. 80, they found a 26 yearold woman and a 21 yearold man who had been shot inside of a room both they say were dead. It was determined that vazquez new one of the victims, Officials Say he should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information should call police. And thats a big story weve been following the nationwide propalestinian, palestinian protests, students at the university of San Francisco have now joined in the demonstrations. They have launched an encampment on campus at welsh field. The demonstrators are demanding that the school disclose all Financial Investments in israels military and pull those investments. Also a propalestine encampment at White Memorial Plaza on the stanford campus now in its second week, some students that we spoke with say they have noticed additional security measures around the campus. Kron 4 did reach out to pull off to police. They say they have not provided any assistance to the university at this time regarding the safety of students already plans to possibly remove this encampment. And we do know of at least 2 injuries after an aggravated assault encampment on the uc berkeley campus. This is video now of upper sproul plaza was from yesterday afternoon hours after police say there was a physical altercation between 2 opposing groups. One group is attempting to steal the other groups. Flag medical personnel called in to treat the people who are hurt. We do not know how bad the injuries are. At least 200 people were arrested overnight, though, at ucla. That brings the nationwide total of arrest to more than 2000 since midapril. There were some chaotic scenes playing out earlier this morning with officers in riot gear. Workers cleaning up this encampment had to haul away sheets of plywood that were used as a barricade. They has been sweeping trash from the graffiti covered steps. Governor gavin newsom releasing a statement condemning the violence at ucla. It reads here, the law is clear the right to free speech does not extend. To inciting violence. Vandalism or lawlessness on campus. Those who engage in illegal behavior must be held accountable for their action, including through criminal prosecution suspension or expulsion. And the california legislative jewish caucus is expressing their disappointment with how ucla leadership is handling the demonstrations. The cochairs Assembly MemberJesse Gabriel and San Francisco.
