Now at 5, a man in jail tonight, arrested accused of assaulting a plainclothes San Jose Police officer who was providing security for the san jose mayor at the time. As one of our reporters was interviewing a san jose mayor matt mahan in downtown san jose kron fours dan kerman reports. San jose police say this man. 35 yearold Wesley Pollard has been arrested for battering a Police Officer and resisting arrest with violence. The incident was caught by kron 4 cameras during a tuesday evening interview with san jose mayor matt mahan at first in san fernando as steps right next to the mayor. Both he and the plainclothes San Jose Police officer providing security for the mayor inform pollard. That interview is under way do it. Were moving talking for mark. Pollard uses profanity and tells the officer to mind his own business. What happens next is off camera. Its unclear who touches who first. But pollard is heard saying hall smack you right right now 9 seconds later, he does just that hitting the officer in the face and head at least twice at that point. A scuffle ensues and police are called witnesses say at some point pollard begins shaking and the officers tie after 2 more minutes and police nowhere in sight. A customer from a nearby business comes to the offices. Rescue removing pollards hands from the officers tie and allowing the officer to handcuff him. Police eventually arrived and took pollard into custody. One person who witnessed the confrontation but didnt want to go on camera says hes not even sure that the suspect knew the mayor was even involved in all of this and was definitely clear that the person did not know that the security person protecting the mayor was actually a San Jose Police officer in a statement sent as a police say the officer did identify himself and made many attempts to deescalate the situation and avoid using force or taking any enforcement action. Police confirm pollard has an outstanding arrest warrant out of georgia for resisting arrest with violence. The officer hospitalized overnight with head and neck pain. But hes now been released. Demonstrators have created. A tent city of sorts in front of sproul hall in solidarity with other universities in the u. S. Doing similar protests. Kron fours rob nesbitt spoke with one of the organizers about what theyre calling for. Its now day 3 of the free palestine camp on the uc berkeley campus. I spoke with one of the participants, yaz and cash who told me the camp has grown to about 70 tents, as you might imagine, all kind of. Making sure. What were working on on campus is moving. So a lot of us have deadlines. Were chasing. So people are balancing those things. He says the protests will continue until certain demands are met. Including the university calling for a ceasefire in gaza and the stopping of any Financial Support to israel putting him anyway, not thats the second event aniston from all university funds. Partnerships that kind of promote. This carnage. Similar protests have been held at other universities, including columbia, yale and nyu. All of those protests resulted in arrests. Protesters in support of gaza led to several people being detained this afternoon. Similar protests continue at Columbia University in new york where a tent encampment remains in place after the university had given a deadline for its removal of today. But that deadline has been pushed back to the end of the week as the 2 sides say theyve been making progress negotiating. Its clearing. We want to lend our hand, not just our hearts and we want to we want to create a framework of real support. 2 weeks after the Arizona Supreme Court ruled in favor of a 160 yearold near total abortion ban. Governor gavin newsom is announcing new legislation to allow Arizona Doctors who perform abortions here in california, arizona currently has a law on the books allowing abortions in the first 15 weeks of pregnancy. But the state Supreme Court ruled earlier this month. It should follow a lot from 18. 64 which bans nearly all abortions except for when the pregnant persons life is in danger. And response newsom and the california legislative womens caucus are pushing forward and urgency bill allowing Arizona Doctors in Good Standing to come to california to provide abortion care for their patients who have traveled here. We proudly take on this fight. We will not abandon our sisters or their Health Care Professionals in arizona or in any other state. Get this bill to my desk as quickly as possible. Because newsoms legislation is an urgency bill. It needs twothirds approval to pass. Meantime, the gop controlled arizona at lower state house voted to repeal that near abortion ban. However, it still needs approval from the Arizona State senate and the governor. Todays announcement comes on the same day denim day observance mets to empower and support survivors of violence. New at 5, a bay area man has been found dead after falling apparently while on a hike in oregon that happened sunday on the coastal trail near natural bridges, which is fewer than 20 miles from the california border. In a joint effort between the 2, both the county and the city as sandra fell worked together over the next 3 years to help individuals living in an encampment around them, a home creek path. Now i spoke with the saint roch bells mayor who says this is a chance for them to do more. The city of samara fell. Marin county are receiving a grant for nearly 6 Million Dollars to help those living in an encampment along home creek path. The money is coming from the states encampment resolution majority of these funds will be through case managers support support services who work with folks want want to find out. What is that hurdle . What is it that they need . What is the next step to go towards permanent supportive housing. According to mayer, calling of sandra fell, the money will allow them to provide interim housing and social services to over 60 People Living there step will be finding agency who can do that. Handson work in really engage deeply with folks it will be working with the county to make sure that whatever System Agency with theyre bringing works of what were already doing. The mayor says they plan to partner with nonprofits like Saint Vincent de paul society of marion, who has done outreach to those living in encampment. So we already know who they are. And with that funding, were looking at county providing case and then the city helping with finding transitional places for people to stay. Well, we help them get housing, voucher or other some sort of subsidized housing. Now with this program, the brain health and human scent Human Services and city will have 3 years to help those and this encampment and they plan to meet the next couple weeks to discuss the next steps.
