Our top story this hour, a pilots writing in the cockpit of a horizon air passenger jet allegedly tried to shut down the engines in midflight. This incident happened sunday at a flight that was going from everett, washington to San Francisco. The plan had to be diverted to portland where it was met by Law Enforcement officers. Kron 4 Charles Clifford joins us now live from San Franciscos International Airport with an update on this story. Its a bizarre one. Charles. Yeah, good afternoon. The good thing here is nobody was injured in this incident. But the fbi, the Portland Police department, are now investigating this case in which one man has been arrested. He is facing 100 67 charges, including 83 counts of attempted murder. On sunday afternoon, Alaska Airlines flight 2, 0, 5, 9, a 76 seat horizon air flight was flying from everett, washington to San Francisco when an offduty Alaska Airlines pilot who was riding in the jump 13, the cockpit allegedly tried to shut down the engines of the plane. The pilots were able to regain control and that man was removed from the cockpit. The pilots then requested to make an Emergency Landing in portland that can be heard, describing the situation over the radio. Weve got to try the cockpit. Back right we want Law Enforcement to get on the ground after landing, the suspect was taken into custody without incident. He since been identified as 44 yearold joseph david emerson, residents of Pleasant Hill at this point, we dont know his motive for allegedly trying to turn off the engines, but hes now facing 83 counts of attempted murder along with Reckless Endangerment and one count of endangering an aircraft. All right, back live now, anderson is currently in custody in Multnomah County in oregon. In portland is expected to be arraigned in Court Tomorrow afternoon. Neighbors really taken aback after hearing the news today. We spoke with the couple who lives right next door to the pilot. Theyve known the pilot and his family for the past 5 years after they moved into this community. They are shocked. We know that the pilot, Joseph Emerson, 44 years old and his family of 3, his wife and 2 young boys moved into their home here in Pleasant Hill about 5 years ago. Their next door. Neighbors have known them ever since telling us that theyve had pleasant conversations there. A pleasant family, and that theyve only had great interactions with emerson describing his personality as kind outgoing and friendly. They are shocked after learning the developing news today. I shocked and we still cant believe it or this how much it would all. I dont know what happened to mentally, that he would do Something Like that. Hes always been very positive. Very friendly history at the charm. You know, i know children. The children have played over here. Just 10 is now being held on 83 counts of attempted murder and Reckless Endangerment, along with one count of endangering an aircraft. You know, we mentioned that we have been speaking with neighbors this morning and today they actually told us that he just received new training and he was excited about that. Meteorologist kyla grogan here now details we had some showers on sunday anymore on the way this week. A potentially a little bit. But lets talk about what happened this weekend. You can see the system that rolled through the brought us some rain and notice it even came with a little bit of lightning as you got further to the east of the bay area. You can kind of see it popping right, upset east of sacramento and heading towards the sierra. Also a few snowflakes for flying. But at this hour, of course, were nice and clear. Weve got those blue skies out there. We do certainly have a little marine layer. Can see it hanging out just down off the peninsula and it will start to move in a little bit to talk about rain totals. If youre at mount tam over 2 inches of rain, i mean, frankly, over 2 and a quarter in mill valley. 1. 2, a little over half an inch santa rosa even arraigned in the east bay got just a close to half an inch of rain, San Francisco, but too tense in san jose. Just a trace certainly south of the golden gate. It was a lot less today. We have cleared out. We do certainly have some marine layer presence thats making itself known. But temperatures right now sitting at about 66 degrees in downtown San Francisco. Weve made it up into the 80s up in the north bay nevado at 81. But a little cool spot like knapp about 73. 75 in livermore in antioch, about 77 at this hour or so. Im looking ahead. We are going to see temperatures get a little bit cooler as we have 2 fronts that are going to come through as we get through the week. The first one coming our way on wednesday. So what will notice is today . A little bit breezy and then as we get into tomorrow, more similar kind of pattern as we had today with a few more clouds and then a little bit of wind in a much cooler temperature profile as we get into wednesday. That is the first front to come through. Theres another one on friday. Both of them do have a chance of showers with it. Governor gavin newsom in china to kick off his week long visit to focus on Climate Change. His trip started with a visit today to hong kong. Kron fours Michael Thomas has the latest. Governor Gavin Newsoms trip to china is ultimately to strengthen californias role when it comes to Climate Change worldwide. Take a look. These are photos of the governor in china today at a speaking engagement. He plans to make a total of 5 different stops around the country. It includes tours of the highspeed rail facility, a tesla factory and also a visit with the school with his wife. He also plans to sign a climate agreement of understanding with various chinese provinces. And also keep in mind, california has a long history of climate collaboration with china. Its also home to the Largest Group of chinese americans. However, this visit does come as tensions between the u. S. And china rise over trade, human rights, the future of taiwan and international conflicts. But the topic of climate in collaboration with california remains. San franciscos Bay Ferry Service is changing its schedule because of construction to refurbish the alameda terminal. The ferries richmond weekday route will now depart at 12 15 instead of noon. The downtown San Francisco 11 20am, departure to richmond is now canceled. Ferry service is also canceled between oakland and alameda, as well as the seaplane departure at 08 25pm. All of these changes will stay in effect until january. 1st. So House Republicans are essentially starting from scratch here tonight trying to narrow down that lengthy list of candidates with no clear front runner in sight. 9 House Republicans are making their pitch monday about why they should be the next speaker of the house as members grow more and more impatient without one verison. Former House SpeakerKevin Mccarthy said on nbcs meet the press that the organizational failure is wasting republicans. Majority but florida congressman matt gaetz, who led the charge to oust mccarthy, defended the dysfunction on his firebrand podcast. If we end up with a more conservative speaker, then we will have achieved the object object upgrading the position after mccarthy. Republicans also rejected nominees. Steve scalise and jim jordan. Mccarthy is now throwing his support behind the senior most member on the new candidate list, minnesota congressman tom emmer has been successful. This is not a time for a learning speaker, many republicans at least agree with that since the federal government risk a shutdown threat in a matter of weeks, every day goes by. Were situation down as a government on abcs this week, texas congressman Michael Mccaul said lawmakers also have to approve support for israel. Following a summer of recordbreaking heat, Scientists Say california is now in store for a warm and wet winter. Noaa is predicting a strong el nino will strengthen over the next 2 months. Theyre expecting temperatures for december through february to be warmer than average all across the northern u. S. And much of the west now also predicts a wetter winter than usual in many regions of the country, including nearly all of california. The southern plains, texas and the southeast. Warmer and wetter winter. Well talk about that with this quick live look outside here across the embarcadero where we have a cruise ship coming in. People can enjoy some fun here. So what do you think about a warmer and wetter winters . I want you to stay warmer. Wetter winter 3 times. What doctor i love talking to us, warmer wetter winter. You know, el nino is a little tough here, right . Because if we look at the patterns, in fact, coming up a little later in the show, we are going to look at those on the new patterns and talk about why its a little difficult. Northern california to get a locked in on things with that. But lets start with where we are today, which is it is kind of lovely out there right . Were a little cool in spots. San francisco right now in some spots down to the 50s mostly in the 60s. Oakland right now that 68, were in the 70s san Jose Livermore concord, santa rosa, about 75 or we start off very foggy this morning in Half Moon Bay sitting at about 61 degrees. Now the wind has been picking up in just since we were on air last hour. Weve now got up to about 20 Miles Per Hour at sfo. Notice it is that on shore flow. So does bring in kind of that cooler moister air mass with it as we get into the overnight tonight, well see a little marine layer building in a little bit of that. Patchy fog is out there. Some clouds will start increase as well. Temperatures not bad 40s 50s but boy, we get to the end of this week and im telling you, were going to see those temperatures in our inland valleys, get real chilly. Well talk more about that a little bit later, too. But lets talk about the wind right now because it is going to be kicking as we get into tonight and not just tonight, but again, tomorrow afternoon and evening. As you can see. And then it really kind of stays brisk as we get throughout the night on wednesday and then throughout the day on wednesday, too. So that is because weve got a little front thats going to be tracking through and its going help kick up some of these breezes. So just be prepared for that. It is also going to reinforce the cool air, going to see 2 shots of that this week. So taking a live look here from the east bay. You can temperatures today, obviously pretty nice. Were talking about some 70s same story really for tomorrow. But by the time that front rolls through on wednesday, now were going to see those temperatures get knocked down and again on friday when the next push comes in and get that cold air reinforcing. So heres that first one and notice when say cold air head on up to montana, theyre going snow storm. Parts of utah could see that too. For us. A little bit of snow in the sierra possible. Looks like we dont get a whole lot of rain out of this. Then the system comes in friday and that one we could get a little bit of rain. The models are quite l
