Now at 5. 30, we continue our coverage on the new war in the middle east. Israeli leaders have ordered a complete siege of the gaza strip after an attack by hamas militants over the weekend. More than 900 people have been killed. Thousands are injured and talking about more than 150 people who have been kidnapped with hamas now threatening executions. Thousands more are now displaced following waves of attacks. Robert sherman is in israel with the very latest. It feels as though every hour we stand on the ground here in israel, the ante is upped and the tensions heighten all day long. Weve been hearing bombs falling on the gaza strip in the distance. This has been what the Israeli Air Force has been doing all day long, pounding the gaza strip again and again. But weve also heard heightened rhetoric coming from the Israeli Defense minister saying that they are prepared to cut off supplies going into the gaza strip. That includes food, fuel, electricity as well. We really havent heard this kind of heightened rhetoric, but the message that weve gotten from Israeli Military forces is that they are looking for a conclusion to all of this. That is absolute. Thats whats happening down at the gaza strip. But its not just there. If you look at israels northern border as well. Israeli air force says that they had to engage in attacks today on lebron, not thats the northern side of the country here where the Palestinian Islamic is now claiming responsibility for attacks at that more northern border there, which means not only is the southern portion of israel and a potential contentious situation. But also the north as well. So thats what were talk about when we say it seems as though the anti continues to be as we stand here hour by hour in israel. But when you talk to people on the ground here, they say that this all just feels so different. Yes, the average israeli citizen, theyre very used to the constant threat of missiles and bombings. Theyre very used to the air raid. Sirens going off. But there is this feeling when we talk to Israeli Citizens that there is this unknown, which is worrisome, what will the future hold in the coming days . Will there be any responses of great magnitude that they need to be concerned about . Those are some of the things that are weighing on the minds of many of these Israeli Citizens here as it lee, wait to see what the future has in store in tel aviv, israel. Robert sherman. All right. Want to take a deeper look now into some of the things that have caused this conflicts between. Israel and the Palestinian Militant Group hamas and to give us a better understanding, were now joined by cal state east bay professor lonnie of the brooks, professor. Thank you for joining us. Of course. The rocket attack definitely took the world by surprise over the weekend. But the conflict there has been ongoing for quite some time. Could you help give us a little bit of background . Was there an incident that triggered this violence over the weekend . Yes, thank you for basically she typically hamas. Yeah, it made a mistake. I they. You know, there have been warming relationships between the saudis and the air states in the past years where their countries that want to create more peaceful relationships with israel. Create a more lasting peace. Is basically in that regime. Unfortunately, they dont represent that the hearts and attention minds of most palestinians necessarily. And at the same time, the treatment by Israeli Settlers of inhabitants has i in recent violence against postings, especially in the west bank. So you have a tinder box here of Strategic Interests where hamas is working in some ways on the behalf of Iranian Regime against arab states to, again, sort of like a proxy war. And so thats, you know, really terrible and deadly destructive because palestinians and israelis all hope for a more peaceful future in, you know, this is terrible failure on the israeli leadership and they will have to pay for this as well. But as at its charter, killing and wiping out of is that the israeli state and they see is really citizens as soldiers of the israeli state. So, you know, their actions in terms of that section of hostages and killing of innocent civilians, really the shows some of their colors, unfortunately in, you know, just in march, there was massive of thousands of protest against internally in gaza as well as in israel, by israelis against their own Israeli Government. And president netanyahu. So, you know, i think it just shows that israelis and palestinians want a better future. Theres no reason why gaza cannot be flower of the middle east. Mean, it has, you know, some of the most beautiful peoples and countryside that you can imagine. So theres much more next 8, stake here and its just a sad day to this violence happened. But again, its important to understand the context. You know, the media wants to force us into, you know, rigid polar a tease and theres no reason why cant be both pro israel co posting in peoples in and just pay for the best for both that they can imagine more. Imagine our way out ahead of this conflict. But has has made it difficult. And israel actually ceded territory to hamas in 2004 seed in the gaza strip to the passing peoples. That is one election. Then they became a brutal dictatorship. They threw the pillow that used rule the gaza strip. They threw them out in a civil war. And, you know, they have become sort of like isis, many ways. So again and the people are not under under complete freedom either. Thats what Prime Minister netanyahu was saying today that the world should response to this as they did when isis was such a threat that i guess the the question i have is ok, israel was attacked there now responding declaring war. What is the endgame . What does israel hope to achieve before it will pull back in violence. Well, it. Well, it wants to remove hamas from power. That is the end game. Is that possible . Well, it is possible, but it probably had a terrible cost. I for the for the for the palestinian peoples and for israelis that maybe been abducted. So this is, you know, this is horrible, you know, in terms of what the outcome is. I mean, the outcome in the nurture your team is not good. In the far turn. We can hope for and more lasting peace. But hamas is a tpterrible security threat. Im not only to israel but to some peoples today. They have squandered opportunities for making peace. And you know, a deadly stated that their that their goal is to why that is real. Im black is really a jewish and native americans understand the impressions of my peoples in a really, really and in pacific to the palestine peoples causes. I want them to to have the most that they can have as well as the israelis. Professor and here at home, you know, americans trying to make sense of all of those living in the u. S. You might not be american. Is there something we should be keeping in mind as we see and hear what is coming out of there . Yeah, i would say, you keep in mind that i was in israel summer. People are on the ground. You know it irrespective of their governments. They went, they want peace. This plenty of an israeli friends that have palestinian friends and and and who have african refugee fans and who do not represent the right. Weve told of the Israeli Government and asking you not believe in so understand that human beings are involved here. Its not just government rhetoric. Its more than that. We have to imagine better. Theres no reason why that has cannot have the regime. They deserve the democracy. They deserve. Keep that in mind. I think its ace try to, you know, be totally like and take palestinian are anti israeli, you know, but have empathy with these peoples are going through. You my has a right exist is you the right to exist we can create Something Better than this and whats happening right now. Well said, and we have to leave it there. But more empathy, certainly is a good idea. Lani of the brooks, professor with cal state east bay. We thank you for your time this evening. And wishing all the best to the people in the middle east. Most of the but whats interesting is many of those resorts wrobel well in the summertime like july he just had. So theyre hoping for a banner year. Remember the years before that there was a much in the way of snow. So. A feast or famine, its been for them. They are going to start to see some colder temperatures rolling in the sierra nevada. So even if theyre making snow, i think thats going to start to stay. Thats some of the higher peaks storm clouds, of course, rolling into the state today. A few showers here winding down, though. Now you can see the storm or the heavy rainfall moving into far northern california. Then it just begins to fall apart. Robin, on the backside of the ridge of high pressure. But still some cold temperatures left behind. In fact, weve got freeze watches going up tonight through tomorrow morning across much of this northern sierra nevada, extending all the way in to much of nevada as those temperatures are going to be dipping down into the 20s and the 30 so getting cold up there in the high country here in the bay area. We do have some clouds overhead, a chance of a few scattered showers through the evening hours tonight and the looks like showers will come to an end as we head through the night tonight. But then another chance, i think by tomorrow afternoon, as were going to see another cold front comes swinging on through. So if youre headed out the door, you might want to grab rain coat with you. Its not going to be much if you have any and all looks like hes going to taper off toward 8 oclock tonight. Still some lot of lingering clouds out there. And so here we go me. You can see the storm system one rolling through tne off the coastline. This one in the gulf of alaska looks pretty wound up and were going again going the southern edge. That systems of moves a little bit closer. So not a ton of rain from that. Maybe a few 107 inch. If you get that. Also another big rain maker, but certainly well take it as we enjoy the storms moving on through. Kind of string youve got that one coming through for tomorrow afternoon. And that kind of falls apart behind that. I think we start to talk about some gusty winds, especially on wednesday. Maybe some of those northerly winds, maybe some offshore winds as we get in the middle of the week. And then as we get toward the weekend, again, weve got another weak system kind of falling apart as it comes to leaving a slight chance of a shower in the bay area. But then after that, well, weve got another storm system may be a little more impressive as we get in toward the following monday. So lot of activity out there right now. Things are changing in the atmosphere tomorrow. Temperatures are going to be mainly in the 60s and the 70s with the next few going to keep things a little bit unsettled specially as we get into the weekend. Again, a little doesnt look like much not to be a rain out. Were not talking inch of rain coming down. Were talking about very, very much like we had today. Just a few hundreds and thats about i think were deserving. After all the heat weve oh, my gosh. The people said enough was my mom like, ok, stop haha, were ready for fall. Yes, its got to florence.
