Im Justine Waldman and we will start with the 75,000 Kaiser Health care workers and the employees who are getting ready to go on strike their labor contract with kaiser expired over the weekend kron fours Michael Thomas in walnut creek with the latest. Were just about 2 days away from c one of the largest healthcare strikes in u. S. History and locations just like this. Kaiser in walnut creek could be affected, causing patients to be delayed in multiple ways. In total, theres almost 75,000 healthcare workers set to strike nationwide in this threeday strike could start as soon as october 4th, which is this coming wednesday. It includes workers in washington, colorado, oregon, and almost 60,000 here in california with 20,000 coming out of the bay area. Their contracts expired over the weekend. Union officials telling us they have had good discussions with kaiser, but one of the Biggest Issues are still facing is the pay range for employees. Overnight, kaiser told its members remained at the bargaining table and theres still a chance to strike may not happen. But if it does, it may affect peoples medical plan saying in a statement, quote, in the case of a strike, we will need to reschedule some nonurgent appointments and procedures will contact you in advance if your appointment needs to be rescheduled. Its possible that you could experience longer wait and hold times during a strike. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience. This battle has been going on for months and only time will tell if the union and kaiser officials can come to an agreement. And if workers will get closer to that 6 pay raise that theyve been asking for in walnut creek. Michael thomas kron. 4 news. Governor newsom did veto a bill that would have given workers on strike unemployment benefits. The governor said that he supports and respects the workers who are fighting for their rights. But he says expanding Unemployment Insurance but create cost overruns. In the billions of dollars, california lawmakers did pass the measure while the hollywood writers are on strike. Only 2 states in the country allow striking workers to collect unemployment benefits. Thats new york and new jersey. And governor gavin newsom did announce his plans to replace the late senator Dianne Feinsteins seat to the governor is appointing democratic strategist. The funds of Butler Butler is the president of emilys list and has a long political resume. Kron capitol correspondent Eytan Wallace tells us all about her. Governor newsom wanted quickly after the death of senator Dianne Feinstein on friday that remember, this is a very powerful and important seat. Just one of 2 representing the most populous state in the u. S. Senate newsom had promised to appoint a black woman to the seat and he is making good on his work. La fonda butler is the president of emilys list. Thats an organization working to elect prochoice women to office. Shes also the former president of the seiu United Long Term Care Workers Union and was a member of the uc board of regents for more than 5 years now on top of all of that, she was a Democratic Party strategist who was a long careers california politics. She will be the only black woman serving in the u. S. Senate and the first openly lgbtq person to represent california in the senate as well. We spoke with Loyola Law School professor Jessica Levinson about why this was such an important pick. So i think that ms butler is a smart pick because Governor Newsom is essentially able to make good on both of his promises. He said im not going to pick somebody whos actively running in the race. He didnt want to put his on the scale. And he also said im going to pick a black woman. Picked a black woman who is also at the forefront of issues. He cares about about gender equality, about reproductive choice. And so i think for the governor, this pick makes a lot of sense. It also makes sense because Senate Democrats need another person there. They cannot be down a body and we expect that ms butler will be sworn within a matter of days. And already questions are rising over butlers official residence. Now for biography on the emilys list website and on her twitter account listed her state of residence as maryland. But the Governors Office is quickly putting that to bed saying she is a longtime california resident and has a house here and a clarification that she moved to a dc suburban maryland when she took over as emilys list president in 2021, a spokesperson from the Governors Office tells me butler will re register here before she is officially sworn later this week, governor gavin newsom wrote this on social media about butler, quote from her time as president of emilys list, a leading the states Largest Labor union. She has always stood up for what is right and has led with her heart and her values. So what happens next . Will butler is expected to be sworn in later this week . And as for how this impacts the 2024 race to fill that seat, well, were told butler is free to run for the seat of she wants. She join major democratic candidates, adam schiff, but early and katie porter who have already entered the race in the newsroom. Im a tom wallace. And Funeral Plans are in place for senator Dianne Feinstein. The public will have an opportunity to pay their respects to her later on this week. Her body was flown back to San Francisco from washington, d. C. , over the weekend. She was escorted from sfo to sinai memorial chapel. The Police Department saying a special route through the city was planned for her arrival. They say people along that route. Were stopping to pay their respects applauding also cheering her name. She will also lie in state at San Francisco city hall on wednesday from 09 00am until 07 00pm. And the public is invited to come pay their respects at that time and sign a condolence book. Then on thursday at one in the afternoon, a Funeral Service will be held inside the herbst theater at the San Francisco war memorial and performing arts center. The funeral is not open to the public, but a simulcast of that service we shown inside city hall at the north like court and well continue to keep you updated as soon as more information becomes available about her Funeral Plans. But you get up now to talk about our forecast with this live look outside across San Francisco. A little fog coming in today on our first monday in october. Were on the way for a warmup this week. We have Brittany Begley with us here at noon to chat about the forecast and it looks like its going to be good one this week. Its going to be a good one. Its going from Pumpkin Spice definitely with october to just as warmer summer, like temperatures. So kind of a roller coaster. Again, as we peak outside, you can see the most part were looking at up blue skies slightly cloudy conditions. The big picture showing you temperatures right now as we speak. San francisco, 64 livermore. 72 in santa rosa. Right now were at 71. But those temperatures going to go up just a little bit as the day goes on. So by 2 oclock, what were really going to see a sunny, nice conditions coast, 60 for bay. 72 inland. 76, but by 5 oclock, what were really going to watch those breezy temperatures breezy conditions, especially inland. We could see a gust of wind up to 20 Miles Per Hour. So even though at 5 were going to be at 78, it may feel a little bit cooler than that. Coastal be at 62 and bay at 70 as we roll into the evening hours, see mostly Clear Conditions as you wake up see slightly foggy conditions. But what youre really going to notice today is just those breezy conditions, especially inland. You can see that by one. 45 a vacaville, those wind speeds of 20 Miles Per Hour. And thats when you start to hear those large tree branches sway this whistling sound outside your window. 6. 30. Were going to see on your way home. We could see a messy commute just as gusty conditions. San francisco, august of 20 Miles Per Hour. Just north of 26. So again, were going to be breezy as roll into the evening. The big story for us really was this weekend, right . We had a couple sprinkles. The sierra had some snow, but all about this highpressure system coming from the east of us going bring us much warmer temperatures. So yeah, were starting off feeling like fall. But take a look at your screen by this week. In those inland temperatures. Were looking at the 80s and 90s so well above average. All thanks to the High Pressure system and you can see that. So again, we go monday, 80 degrees, but wednesday, 90 degrees, sunny and breezy. Thats going to be inland. Abe 87 in the coast. 81, so changes just seen headed our way. All right. Thank you. And with that Government Shutdown averted fleet week is now full steam ahead. The event involves 1000 sailors and marines and members of the coast guard. Also those blue angels. So right now im on pier 30 32 here in San Francisco and the fleet portion of fleet week has arrived that the uss John P Murtha there behind me and just a little while ago, we could see off in the distance. The blue angels flying in formation around San Francisco bay. So they are for what will be a very busy fleet week. Monday morning, the navys blue angels arrived in the bay area to kick off San Francisco fleet week each year. Fleet week attracts hundreds of thousands of people to the city. Throughout the week, visitors can tour ships docked along San Franciscos waterfront. Theres also High School Band competition, a concert to honor the fallen on thursday evening. Art exhibits and free concerts around the city. But fleet weeks biggest attractions start on friday morning at 11 with the parade of ships arriving through the golden gate, the air show which features Navy Air Force and civilian planes will take to the skies throughout the day on friday, saturday and sunday. The Navy Blue Angels always the Main Attraction will be the last to fly each afternoon. Fleet week is a big event for the city of San Francisco in the navy. Weve been planning for months and months for this fleet week. I were so excited that were able to pull and pull in on weve got a full lineup of events for october 2nd through the 9th and were really looking forward to anyone planning to visit San Francisco for fleet week should keep in mind that parking can be very limited, especially on friday, saturday and sunday. Tires, screeching and smoke filling the air has become all too common at this intersection of sonoma boulevard and lemon street in valais have every week. If im being honest to me to he says many of the sideshows start around the Liquor Stores closing time. The store closes at 02 00am. Police say sunday side show started at 2. 30. Your gun says well, he anticipates seeing sideshows. He still worries about the risks i safety. Yes, off day well be having like maybe comp cases just about 4 miles away to more sideshows happening simultaneously. On different intersections of lewis brown drive. This car was on fire. A man who lives near lewis brown and vw. Williams drive didnt want to appear on camera but says he and his neighbors are tired of the sideshows. He says it often takes place a long time to respond if they show up at all. Another man who didnt want to show his face or give his name, says he understands why some people may enjoy sideshows, but it can be a nuisance. Its big thing in Spring Lake Park community. What the Biggest Issue there are usually living or being around a place where they do it all. The time is just that noise. Shes got details on the forecast. How hot you think its going to get . You know what . Were going to get close to 90. So its going to start to feel like summer again. So if you enjoy the cooler temperatures today were right there at normal. Things are going to change for some folks. Was like, alright, lets take a live look outside. Lets see whats going on as we peak into the airport. You can see nice and quiet. Always checking the bush to see is that breezy . We sing breezy conditions. Not right now. Thats going to change a little bit later on today. And no major delays at the airport right now as we speak. Those temperatures again are going to be right there. At average, a San Francisco. Your average is 71. Were looking at 65 today. Oakland, your average is 74. Were looking at 73, san jose. 79 right there at 78. And you can even see santa rosa. Your average is 81. But were looking at 78. So those temperatures, again, were struggling right there to get at average. But things are really going to start to change is all thanks this highpressure system coming from the northwest, bringing us those warmer temperatures not to mention the winds. So one of those offshore winds rising up those temperatures. So as the week goes on, were going to see well above average temperatures. And then start to look at a Fire Safety Concerns because we have this warm, dry temperatures for the next couple of days. So again, its going to feel nice today. But as we fast forward, you can see looking ahead, we go monday today, mostly sunny inland. By wednesday, were going up by 90 degrees bay. Right now were looking at 74 for your high, but were looking at wednesday at 87 and even the coast were looking at 64 today. So temperatures are great. Were going to see cloudy conditions for you. But by wednesday, really jumping up to 80 degrees. And thats all because of that High Pressure system bringing us those warmer temperatures. Today. Going to see on your ride home is just gusty conditions will map that out for you. And ill break down the hottest day of the week. Coming up next. Thanks so much. Now at noon, the United Auto Workers strike against ford has escalated and hundreds of thousands of supplier jobs nationwide could be impacted. News stations, kelsey kurds, teen. Has more now on the potential ripple effects. We have roughly 125,000 fire employees that support our Michigan Assembly plant. Prolonged, this really could have a Significant Impact as it extends into our other ford factory. We see anywhere between 325,500 1000 employees. That could be laid thats fords chief supply officer painting a dire picture. What this United Auto Workers strike could lead to. Ford says its not just the vehicles they manufacture, but its every little part that is used to put the car together. That could become hard to find. Fords ceo echoing these concerns in for sizing the thousands of jobs that are on the line. If the u a w goal is a record contract, theyve already achieved that. Thats grossly irresponsible to escalate the strikes and her thousands of families. But so far, the u a w isnt backing down. On friday, the union announcing 2 additional plans to join the picket lines, including a Ford Assembly facility in chicago. And a General Motors plant in lansing, michigan. A total of 25,000 Union Workers walking off the job just like 80 years ago today. Our union is building a different arsenal of democracy. But this war is against some foreign country. The front lines are right here at home. Its the war of the working class versus corporate greed. We are the new arsenal of democracy. The workers are the liberators and our strike is the vehicle for liberation. Meanwhile, workers are continuing to stand firm. I think the pandemic really helped to show workers. You know how essential they truly are. When we were labeled as essential workers. And just before that, we were labeled as as by these billionaire corporations right . As the roadways, we talk about the billionaire raking in billions and billions of dollars on profits in. Here we are just as the workforce. Just trying to get our fair so far. We havent heard of any supplier. Layoffs are plans to reduce staff and whether or not is a valid threat by ford or negotiating tactic remains to be seen. That was Kelsey Kernstine reporting for u. S. Im Trevor Shirley in washington, House Speaker Kevin Mccarthy helped broker the deal that avoided a Government Shutdown. But that could come at the cost of his own speakership. Ive got that story coming up just ahead. And covid era childcare programs are coming to an end leaving families wondering how theyre going to be able for that cost. And now some lawmakers are looking to see what they can do to help. Health affordable childcare is about to get harder to find for millions of americans. The covid era emergency funding has now expired. The American Rescue plan signed back in 2021. Included 24 billion dollars in child care. Stabilization grants. According to the century foundation, more than 70,000 child care programs across the country are now impacted affecting about 3. 2 million children currently in those programs. So in response, a Bipartisan Group of lawmakers is looking to address the high cost of childcare. Going over the childcare. Cliff. Could cost parents 9 billion dollars in earnings and consternation over 10 billion dollars in economic activity. Talk about making sure that parents have the freedom. And the resources to have child care options, affordable child care options. The initiative faces an uphill challenge in a republican led house thats looking to cut ways that they see is. Quote, our runaway Spending Plans happening this wednesday. Every Television Radio and cell phone in the United States will send out a warning town for an Emergency Alert. A judge has ordered 14 bay area Subway Restaurants to shut down the franchise owners identified as john mazza and his wife jessica. Order to pay workers nearly 1 Million Dollars in back wages and damages. Federal investigators found that the owners failed to pay wages regularly. They also are accused of bouncing checks, stealing tips that were left by customers and putting children as young as 14 to work with dangerous equipment, locations that are shutting down, include several across napa and petaluma as well as stores in santa rosa. Concord, vallejo and windsor. The largest dam removal project in u. S. History is now underway along the california oregon. Border. Crews are working to remove 4 dams along the klamath river. That will reconnect more than 400 miles of that waterway for the first time in more than 100 years and preserve vegetation. The demolition is part of a National Movement to return the flow of the natural water for the nations rivers and also restore the surrounding habitats since the start of this movement. More than 2000 dams have been removed across the country. The california condor is making a comeback. The endangered birds were recently spotted that mount diablo and also in a portion of stanislaus county, Dennis Shanahan reports. Standing about 3800 feet tall. Mount diablo is visible from the sacramento and san joaquin valleys. But to truly appreciate it, you can drive all the way to the top and bask in the breathtaking views. And if you are extremely lucky, you might get a glimpse of a rare endangered california condor or this was big news for us because for the first time in 100 years, we had a flock, 6 bird flock of california, condors in contra costa county, juan pablo galvin, martinezs senior land use manager for the nonprofit save mount diablo. He explains condos are tracked in california by gps. This flock of 6 that was around mount diablo originally started out in this area down by a pinnacles and big sold as a flock of 26 birds. Most of them went up up up, stopped around the pacheco pass area right here. This extent visited mount diablo, went on to spend the night on so in stanislaw county, which is part of the expansive diablo range. This is great news in a time where we need great news, especially in terms of our planet and nature. The first time in 100 years that a flock of these 9 and a half foot wingspan majestic birds. Have been in our area. But the diablo range offers the bird is plenty of open, undisturbed space. And along with that, a lot of the small animals, the condors like defeat on with intensive management and with our conservation of the 200 mile long diablo range, a prime area for intact habitat. The condors love. Were seeing them explore further for the north. Reclaiming those ranges that they used to have a centuries ago. If we work hard and we protect their home, give them a place to settled to recuperate population. We can have Success Stories like this. So we want to track the forecast in San Francisco as well. Meteorologist Brittany Begley here now with details. Hi, brittany. Yeah. What a beautiful day. Were keeping a close eye on those temperatures for you is going to start to feel like summer. Little bit later on today. Thats not the story were going to be right there at average. So if you like seasonable temperatures as we roll into october today is for you. If you like warmer temperatures. Well, a little bit later is going to be for you as we peak in the golden gate. You can see right here, a blue skies for the most part. You can see an airplane actually in the corner of the screen and traffic slowly picking up, but really just sets the tone of todays going to be for the most part, a beautiful day. San francisco right now. 65 san jose. Were at 71 even santa rosa. Were looking at 71 as we take a look at the big story for us. What were going to watch today really isnt about the temperatures because were right there at average are struggling to get average is going to be those gusty conditions. So again, futurecast when showing you around 2. 15, those wind gusts vacaville of 19 Miles Per Hour. And then even sandra were at 26 Miles Per Hour by 6. 45 . So the evening commute, you can see some gusty conditions or maybe even a little bit of debris the roadway. I was like to throw in those gusty conditions because inland it drops on that feels like temperature. But i like all right. What is 25 30 Miles Per Hour actually mean . So when we get to 18 Miles Per Hour, thats when you see again those small tree branches sway. And when we get to 31, thats when we start to see those large tree branch way. So were kind of in the middle. But and this case today, what im telling you is its just going to take those temperatures inland and drop it down just a little bit. So hour by hour 5 oclock. Were going to look at those breezy conditions inland will be at 78 bay, 70 and even coast are going to be at 62 as we roll into the evening hours. 8 oclock. Well see mostly Clear Conditions. Those lows going to stay right there to 50s with the exception of santa rosa. Youre going to be looking at 47. And as we wake up tomorrow as we help plan your day, so average temperatures again, those temperatures going to slowly start to warm up. I do see a little bit of fog. You can see in the 6 oclock 7 oclock and maybe even 8 oclock hour for your morning commute. But it really is all about thisgHigh Pressure system bringing us a big changes again. Were going to go right. Theyre struggling to get to average. But the High Pressure system coming from northwest and also winds really going to start to warm us up this we can look at the 80s and 90s showing it to way above average by thursday in la 95 89 in coast. Were going to be at 83. Thats the bay fall. Weathen the all right. And National News and a lastminute agreement over the weekend. The government did avoid a shutdown but only doing so for the next 45 days. And the big question remains, will Kevin Mccarthy still be speaker of the house when that date arrives . Washington court. Some republicans are unhappy with the deal brokered over the weekend. They kept the government open. And they may now try to force Kevin Mccarthy from the speakership. The motion to move on from House Speaker Kevin Mccarthy could happen as soon as today. I think we need rip off the bandaid. I think we need to move on with new leadership that can be trustworthy. Leading the charge. Longtime mccarthy antagonists, representative matt gaetz, accusing mccarthy of betraying fellow republicans with this weekends government funding deal. If Kevin Mccarthy is still the speaker of the house, he will be serving at the pleasure of the democrats. Hell be working for the democrat Speaker Mccarthy so far appearing unfazed. Bring it on. Lets get over with it. And lets start governing if hes upset because he tried to push isnt a shutdown. And i made sure government didnt shut down, lets have that fight. This weekends agreement passed with bipartisan support funds the government through the end of november. Some hard right. Republicans voted against unhappy that spending cuts werent more severe and even more unhappy that Speaker Mccarthy sot democratic support. The Democrat Members are very happy with this i think this is a terrible deal for the American People because cutting his Government Spending down most happened. Its unclear whether enough republicans would actually vote to strip mccarthy of his position and even more uncertain whether House Democrats would bother to help save them by believe that its absurd. Public un conference to determine their own leadership and deal with their own problems. But its not up to democrats to save republicans. And theres little reason to assume Congress Wont find itself back in a similar position at the end of november as lawmakers again, try to keep the government open and funded reporting in washington. Its an investigation that began with this video, a fight involving shakoor record execs should night and members of a rival gang hours later, davis, the kingpin of that other group allegedly ordered the shooting specifically duane davis, his own emissions to his involvement in Homicide Investigation that he provided to numerous different Media Outlets over the past several years, davis has made public statements about his involvement in the rap stars murder in his book published in 2021.
