I am quite familiar with firearms. I became mayor is a product of assassination. Im aware sound my assassinated colleague and put a fingers through a in a 1994. Her assault weapons ban was passed. Senator, i know something about what firearms condition after the ban sunset in 2004 feinstein repeatedly tried to get another assault weapons ban passed. But as congress became more polarized, she failed to win support. It exempts 2000, 271 weapons. That there be a real investigation in 201i, feinstein became the top democrat on the Senate Judiciary committee when it held hearings, son Neil Gorsuchs nomination to the Supreme Court once a hotly contested issue. Is no longer a hotly contested issue. We move forward. Feinstein foretold the future when she said she would support gorsuch and warned he would vote to overturn the constitutional right to abortion. Many agreed with feinstein getting reelected with just 54 of the vote in our final term in office ended up being quite a challenge following the divisive twentytwenty confirmation hearing of Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett feinsteins competency was called into question for this comment. This has been one of the best set of hearings that ive participated in in february of 2022. Feinsteins husband to 40 years. Richard bluhm. Died of cancer in just 2 months later for a name. Senators called feinsteins fitness into question in the San Francisco chronicle article saying her memory was rapidly deteriorating. The 88 yearold feinstein, who is by this point, the old a sitting u. S. Senator responded with a list of recent achievements. And in a statement, she said the real question is whether im still an effective representative for 40 million californians and the record shows i am. To California DemocraticCongressmembers Katie Porter and adam schiff both announced they would run for Feinsteins Senate seat, pressed about her future. Feinstein remained unsure. I think people should they want run. For me, i but a little over 2 weeks later in february, feinstein issued a statement saying she would not run for reelection but with serve out her term which ends in 2024. Dan kerman kron. 4 news. And she serves to the end in that last sound bite we hear say i just need a little more time. And at the age of 90 yesterday she went to the senate floor cas just regular everyday vote for nothing in particular that stood out headlines right . And then went home. And i last night, its just remarkable. The physical strength that that takes, by the way, and the devotion to the job shun to the job and the Public Service. And weve been seeing reaction coming in far and wide recently. We had senator state senator scott wiener. Put out this tweet. You see it on the screen. Dianne feinstein was a true giant. She helped save our city becoming mayor after horrific political assassinations in leading us during the worst of the hiv aids health disaster. As our senator, she led on gun safety. And so many issues, in fact, tweeting more recently that in. The 1960s Dianne Feinstein campaign in the community when that wasnt what straight politicians did. And quote, and weve actually got live right now, a senator wiener to talk to us a little bit more and i wondered good morning. Thanks for joining us. Good morning, kate. Did you have any personal encounters with her that you can share . She you know, biased. I had are public persona was very formal and maybe do a little bit proper. And she was a formal person, a lot of ways. But when you were with her personally, she was one of the most down to real authentic people. She was who she was when started running for supervisor in 2009, i was just the sky and the community that was not well known at all. She had divorced early on. I because mayor newsom recommended me to her she was that democrats were in control in washington. She was unbelievably powerful national figure. She wanted to meet with i went in with a target for you would be a 5 minute meeting and ended up being over an hour. She declined a phone call from Chuck Schumer because she was otherwise occupied, had it my campaign flier and telling you what you need to change. And thats be so much information about her time on the board of supervisors. And then we took the photo. She to prepare arm around me. And i yes. And she told me i was a little, too. Stephanie did to loosen so that that was the time i signed that. I knew has to come so what what is what was she telling you that because clearly she was taking you wonder what your wing . And kind of she saw the future. And you what . What what did she tell you to do . What will well, i think she was really became very clear to me that as much as she loved being us. Senator, you know, she was always mayor of San Francisco, start stopping as she was actually really deeply nostalgia for her time on the board of supervisors and what 600 out. I missed wasnt for my time on the board of supervisors is nothing like being local government period. But in francisco in particular, yeah, he was so it was so clear that she loved her time and city hall as you love the city so much. I wish i could help the fire might somewhere. I dont know love probably looking for a minute. If i can ever find it tell you anything about negotiating because when it comes to, you know, rights, womens reproductive the assault, you know, gun ban. All of that. You had to do this thing you had bent. And so a lot of people criticize you for that. Like some women will say, hey, youre not liberal enough, you did. You know your bent on this same thing gun control or, you know, you kind of have to a little bit against you can get everything. And i wonder she kind of shared or you learn anything from her position and negotiations. I think over over time, you know, with her was clear with me and this is something that true for as well. You know. I also a reputation for fighting really hard, but i she exemplified state. You you have to be willing to give and take goshen work with people. You dont agree with youre going to anything just always doctrinaire and rigid. Youre not be that much time. There are certain issues you dont negotiate because there are certain road by certain civil rights issues. For you dont you dont negotiate on not. But there are many issues that you do have give and take in order to get something getting 80 of what you wanted. Part of ear over time. But as long as remember that there are certain core values like basic human dignity, some. All that are red lines need to not are not subject to negotiation. And its amazing what wonderful stories senator. Appreciate you sharing those with us this morning. Thank you so much for your time. Okay. From senator scott wiener to just people on the street reaction has been coming in this morning. Lets go to Michael Thomas. Hes out and this morning in san jose. People have to say, michael. Hi, good morning, everyone. Well, to start, you know, really just a tragic morning to say the least. Senator Dianne Feinstein made a major impact on peoples lives. And what im finding this morning is its really women that are taking this significantly harden talking about women who were up in the 70s. Lets go in the videos like talk about it before hear from them. You know, women who were around for 5 years old in the early 70s, tony, they remember when she became acting mayor and then they also remember 1992 when she ran for that senate spot. Then they say that she really made an impact on them waking up this morning and grabbing that coffee is have a heavy heart. Take a listen. Devastating. She is role model, too. Bunch of young ladies. Amazing. But she had a great life pass away at 90. So like im glad that shes made some changes. You know, lost his hair. So she was a blessing. You know, that center to do you have to do shes back home, its a blessing. All people in all as i continue to talk to people this morning, you can really hear the sorrow and their voice. And another thing that ive noticed, the younger women, women who are 18, 19 that i spoke with, tell me they know about her, you know, from the action that shes done is theyve been alive. Granted, some say that they were barely being born at the time in 1992, but they say they know her history because her legacy was so strong them and the next half but thats what its looking like on the street. Heavy hearts and lots of sorrow as people start their morning this friday and Michael Thomas and send it back to 2. 11. Thank you, michael. There are women girls in politics that are in it because of Dianne Feinstein. So and its mornings like this. When people start reflect. If they have a personal story meeting feinstein at one point fact, were going to talk more about that coming up in a little bit live with our 50, were continuing to get a personal stories of those who havent had encounters with senator Dianne Feinstein who died at the age of 91. Want to talk to our own Chuck Clifford standing by on the phone for us this morning. And chuck, on this day. Share with us. Your memory. Yeah, good morning. 20 plus years ago was the first year i worked to transport routes, which would have been about 2002. I wasnt hard for and election day in november and a second Dianne Feinstein, how . And i why. While she may come out talk about the election and whats going on and i youre from arizona wasnt really familiar with point on it. Sort of had memory of her being kind of pop, no person or a top senator, but wasnt sure what i was getting into. Drove Dianne Feinsteins house high. And im standing outside her house. And he comes out. It was like, what are you doing out here like, well, they want interview you about the election look at what coming to k. So i went into Dianne Feinsteins house is going on the couch. Okay. Sitting on her couch. You want some coffee . I dont drink coffee. I dont. What copy can. But you know, when in like i would love to come me a copy in like that 0. 9 white much in my so i did on her couch. Drinking they dont like and im like chatting up, diane, by about the im probably in there for half an hour talking to at that. By the people interview 1, oh, thats ok, we can do it out front. We went out cars out. And i my tripod in miami interviewed or i think it was the year that gavin newsom was running against matt calls mayor of San Francisco about that day. And it was just really. Kind of strange experience sitting in this very famous womatting in this very famous womans house Drinking Coffee out of a white much. And over the years, i havent her much. Like you didnt publicly quite as much as some of the other it was 21 by may breathe a little fuzzy. And i dont know if youve ever been in front of a weird situation times. Your brain doesnt record everything havent read. Do. I. I have this memory of sitting on her couch talking to her, but im not entirely. I talked great story that is sharing that with us. That is thank you. Man. And its its stories like that that were going to start seeing more and throughout the day today. On the phone with us right now, as a matter of fact, is representative john garamendi, who represents portions of the east bay and north bay on this day, were reflecting and remembering on the life and congressman of senator Dianne Feinstein. I want a personal story, right . I mean, we we all know her amazing accomplishments and what she did in in the senate. But do you have a personal story for us . Many, many of them. I work senator feinstein on a very, very personal level level. Family and really grew up together some 40 years members, all of them. More than personal we were very, very close and that was something that her art. But this is a woman that had enormous empathy for individuals. You just heard of a city down on her couch. Thats the way she was. She was open. She was warm. She always wanted to engage and for patty and i our family. It was year after year as our children grow as our work together, it was just an opportunity to work with extraordinary kind. Generous kerry individual and that related into extraordinary policy successes on the years that she was public life more than 40 years. But i remember mostly the times that we had together that we would around the table, talking with a cup of and on that coffee, im the one wasnt the and i remember watching coffee but from the but it was a coffee mug that she gave me one of her su shi woods. The Committee Hearings all the talk was going on, she would occupy. Or tie. Our work. And it was always powers. Always wonderful bouquets of flowers. And thats all i remember as a person that cared deeply about the beauty of life. She shared that with all of us in very, very meaningful and very, very personal ways. How is your family . We talked about, you know, the ups and downs of raising children, the ups and downs of working in politics. The good days bad days, she was always that kind of open carry individual and that translated into some of the most extraordinary policy changes that really affect the very nature of life in america today, certainly for women. The womens issues that have on the agenda for the last 40 years, Dianne Feinstein carry that. I remember my wife, and diane, working together on campaigns for women. The year of the woman. 1992 when patty ran to the u. S. Congress and i and by her side as they articulated that necessity bringing women into an equal level with and that that we worked on together. Weve been my wife, patti and i and i am so many other things. So did she share the toughest thing about, would we would you or your wife . About being a woman about because just she so friendly. But you know what . She had to be tough as nails too. So did she talk about that like heres what youre in for. Youre going to play in this world. This is what its like. Well, she certainly was a person that could carry the day she was not to be denied. Sure her views her issues critically important to her. They were her life and she would push those forward. I and a particularly on the womens side of it dont mess with diane when it comes to the issues, it was going to be her youre going to be thrown out of the highway that make a difference. It made a difference in the lives our children as they were passing through their years and dog years. And its carrying on today. I know that right now that is undoubtedly doing interviews out in california about work that she diane, over the years back in the early 90s. Was not easy time for women. But it was a time when women came out and like the flowers and case, they were shiny. They were colorful. They were there and they were carrying the day of the year of the change the u. S. Senate. Diane came but also change the house of representatives. And that was a time when women mate norm progress. Take a look at where we are today with the womens issues, the rollback. Many, many conversations. The fact the last conversation i had senator feinstein and her office. She was lamenting the work that she and other women it down in the 90s. And 2, thousands and that in this period. Yeah, across this nation. An attempt to roll back the progress of women and not just the issue of Womens Health and the abortion but more than that all across this nation. And in her last as we across the table in her office, im not so long ago, just a few weeks ago. She was we have to change this. Got to get back on track. And thats the way it w
