This crazy made to the airport. 30 plus hours later, used sleeping in there with this whole time hold devastating we go at least once a year over there and just really can start thinking about it now that weve got home. That woman that i spoke with earlier goede went on to tell me that she was staying at an airbnb and it got completely destroyed. In fact, the roof was ripped off while she was inside. She had about 5 minutes to pack her belongings and she was unable to gather everything. Lets get the latest now on the breaking overnight story from maui that wildfire there. The death toll continues to rise. It stands right now at 36, but were getting a much closer look now at the damage. What you see behind me are satellite images. Weve got several of them that were cycling through showing you certain areas of la hina, which is that destination location on the west side of maui. The tourists are very familiar with. You can see the shoreline there. All of the structures, all of the homes, all of the businesses leading up to it. This is before the fires came through, which is why everything looks fairly normal. Now show you the same satellite images post the fire afterwards. And you can see all the pads where homes and businesses once stood now reduced to just piles of white ash and rubble. And again, these are the very same images i showed you a moment ago. In fact, well do a side by side. So you can see what were talking about here on the left. Youve got the full structures on the right, the very same satellite images taken a day later. And you can see all the damage and the destruction is nothing left the entire city. The town of la hina reduced to. Nothing as you look back and forth between these 2, were actually bridge and the model. One of our reporters at our sister station there in hawaii with a closer look at ground level. Look at the destruction. Well, here on maui, the winds are so strong. I feel like im using a lot of core strength that i didnt know. I had just to be able to stand upright. And of course, the strong winds helped fuel the devastation here on island. In fact, maui county officials have confirmed multiple people have died and rescue efforts are still underway. The beautiful Historic Town of la hina burned to a crisp thousands of maui. Residents are displaced. Thousands of maui. Visitors had nowhere to go. A lot of them have been stuck at Kahului Airport and hundreds of maui. Firefighters with assistance now from firefighters on oahu have been battling these flames around the clock on the western side of maui as well as up country. The red cross is assisting, but whats making it difficult is the lack of cell service, particularly on the west side of maui due to downed power lines. In fact, 911 service was down officials, hawaii officials are still trying to work on that. But we are continuing to monitor the situation here on maui. We are your eyes and ears. Stay with us.
