Burned right up to the coastline, which is why a handful of people actually took the jumping into the water to escape those flames and its spared no building. It didnt care where it was going. This crazy made to the airport. 30 plus hours later, used sleeping in there with this whole time hold devastating we go at least once a year over there and just really can start thinking about it now that weve got home. And a lot of these travelers, you can just see how exhausted they look at. That woman that i spoke with earlier goede went on to tell me that she was staying at an airbnb and it got completely destroyed. In fact, the roof was ripped off while she was inside. She had about 5 minutes to pack her belongings and she was unable to gather everything. Speaking of police, police in alameda are investigating human remains were found near bay farm island. Theyre looking at it as a homicide, but they didnt say why police say they got a call back on july. 20th about object that was discovered on the shore line. Thats how it was what was called later. They determined and confirmed it was in fact, human remains. An autopsy report determined remains belong to a female somewhere between 25 to 40 years old, the identity of the person still unknown right now. So their investigation continues. Lets get the latest now on the breaking overnight story from maui that wildfire there. The death toll continues to rise. It stands right now at 36, but were getting a much closer look now at the damage. What you see behind me are satellite images. Weve got several of them that were cycling through showing you certain areas of la hina, which is that destination location on the west side of maui. The tourists are very familiar with. You can see the shoreline there. All of the structures, all of the homes, all of the businesses leading up to it. This is before the fires came through, which is why everything looks fairly normal. Now show you the same satellite images post the fire afterwards. And you can see all the pads where homes and businesses once stood now reduced to just piles of white ash and rubble. And again, these are the very same images i showed you a moment ago. In fact, well do a side by side. So you can see what were talking about here on the left. Youve got the full structures on the right, the very same satellite images taken a day later. And you can see all the damage and the destruction is nothing left the entire city. The town of la hina reduced to. Nothing as you look back and forth between these 2, were actually bridge and the model. One of our reporters at our sister station there in hawaii with a closer look at ground level. Look at the destruction. Well, here on maui, the winds are so strong. I feel like im using a lot of core strength that i didnt know. I had just to be able to stand upright. And of course, the strong winds helped fuel the devastation here on island. In fact, maui county officials have confirmed multiple people have died and rescue efforts are still underway. The beautiful Historic Town of la hina burned to a crisp thousands of maui. Residents are displaced. Thousands of maui. Visitors had nowhere to go. A lot of them have been stuck at Kahului Airport and hundreds of maui. Firefighters with assistance now from firefighters on oahu have been battling these flames around the clock on the western side of maui as well as up country. The red cross is assisting, but whats making it difficult is the lack of cell service, particularly on the west side of maui due to downed power lines. In fact, 911 service was down officials, hawaii officials are still trying to work on that. But we are continuing to monitor the situation here on maui. We are your eyes and ears. Stay with us. You can see dark hair and dark eyes. And her family says she has diagnosed epilepsy and partial blindness. They are very concerned when she was last seen she was wearing an orange shirt with pokemon on it and gray black sweat pants. If you see her, youre asked to contact the oakland police. The Solano County Sheriffs Office would like to hear from you. Dialysis workers are calling on 2 companies now to do something about statewide staffing shortages and working conditions. We are at the Alamo Elementary School where some of these kids will be going in starting school for the first time today, classes started at 8 oclock this morning. The School District says today will be a minimum day, a time to get to know your teachers, classrooms and classmates. They want remind parents and students, class assignments and schedules can be found on the districts infinite campus portal. Those schedules for Elementary Middle School and high school have already been posted. They also want to remind parents and students about traffic safety. It can get quite busy around School Campuses and School Officials are asking people to be patient and park in designated spaces. Only they know traffic can be frustrating for these few first days as families learned the dropoff and pickup traffic flow.
