harry has been in touch with cal fire today. she has the latest now on the battle to get this fire out. >> cal fire tells me there is some good news. they say the winds have died down and that has allowed firefighters to gain the upper hand on this fire. you see here they did outstanding more incredible video shows firefighters working to get a fire along the big sur coast under control. >> it's being called the colorado fire. the fire is burning in steep, rugged terrain is very difficult to it's got redwoods. it's got large brush. >> and we've also had very poor overnight recoveries. that means that overnight when the vegetation, usually the humidity levels rise, that didn't really happen last night. all areas west of 3800 palo colorado, road to highway one and south. the bixby creek. >> were evacuated. >> part of highway one south of half moon bay was closed in both directions because of downed power lines and branches. but it's now reopened. we were able to an air attack going. 2 helicopters and 2 tankers. we have 3 strike teams here from units from cal fire all over the region. cal fire public information officer cecile juliette tells me the firefighters will continue to work around the clock. firefighters will be on the ground throughout the the planes will be grounded because it's going to be dark. but firefighters going to continue to fight throughout the evening. and then, you know. >> continue on through the morning. he's asking everyone who lives in or near the area to be understanding. >> of the severity of this situation asking for people. >> to be patient and also give first responders a lot of room to work so they can get this fire knocked down. you get everybody back home. she tells me 10 or 15 years ago it would be extremely rare. have a fire of this magnitude. >> in january that now we have a fire year and not a fire season, but she says firefighters are prepared for that. >> amanda hari kron, 4 >> back here at home pg and e crews have been working all day long to try to get the lights back on to thousands of homes and businesses left in the dark from strong winds that rolled through the bay area last night. take a look at this citizen app video of some of the damage left behind for folks in oakland during the height of those outages pg and e says that more than 30,000 of its customers were left in the dark. many of those outages hitting folks in the east bay. >> now, let's take a live look outside as we look at this picture here across the golden gate bridge. calm there tonight. but the winds are really whipping around this time yesterday. boy, what a difference 24 hours makes kron 4 meteorologist mabrisa rodriguez here tonight. >> with a look at just how powerful these winds were as the whipped through the area last night. >> yeah, there were nearly 100 miles per hour, jonathan and just seen especially along the healdsburg hills geyser peak and pine flat road. most of the gusty east winds in the north bay, specifically the highest peaks there. oakland tracking at least 60 mile per hour. wind no surprise there for the downed trees and power lines and half moon bay. 55 mile per hour. wind fortunately tonight, no wind advisories are high wind warnings to contend with tracking calmer conditions. but in our north bay highest peaks could still see gusts upwards of about 45 miles per hour or less sustained winds at 30 miles per hour. for those of you in sonoma. but as i fast forward to sunday morning, look at how gusty it gets a longer co specifically for those of you at half moon bay. so still tracking northerly winds impacting those areas. but then we're all going to notice calmer winds speeds by sunday afternoon into sunday night. so safe to say the worst is over, but don't let your guard down, especially in the north bay, highest peaks and valleys because fortunately, we got a lot of rain throughout the month of december. so it looks like our vegetation threshold normal as far as fuel precipitation goes. but it does take a rapid strong winds to just flip it so that we could see some more possible fire dangers from now. until then, though, we are going to see, for the 2nd half of your weekend, another mild dry day before you gradually start to cool down near average detail on that in my full forecast in just a few minutes. jonathon justine, back to you. risa. thank you. now to covid-19 coverage of the saturday night were folks in santa clara county now have access to free covid-19 test. >> courtesy of the county, some 60,000 test will be handed out to people who signed up for the test online kron. 4 reports now from san jose on the first day of distribution. >> marshall couple park san jose was 100 for distribution sites that opened up saturday throughout santa clara county, including foothill college in the los altos hills. the county will continue to pass the free. i covid-19 antigen rapid tests out through next saturday. you can get them on the shelves. yeah. and it's hard to get them at work. so i saw this. they sent this to work. >> and i thought, oh, my gosh, this is a great, great opportunity to just go pick some up and have home. the county chose to purchase and hand out a total of 60,000 test kits separate from the free tests being offered by the federal government. this as people struggle to find the kits in stores and online on friday, within hours of making 15,000 appointments available for santa clara county residents to pick up your free kids starting saturday, all appointments were booked up definitely helpful. is this early? >> it it is. the county says the tests are accurate and that people are not required to report the results whether positive or negative with there. you have to see people face to face to pick up and be able to do your work. so >> this is amazing to be able to fix that and keep myself and my family say, although the county says this first round of tests have been accounted for and will be claimed they're hoping to order more in the coming weeks in san jose filipe should all kron 4 news. >> foundation shows the rate of kids 5 to 11 years old getting vaccinated for covid has dropped a lot over the last 2 months. experts are saying misinformation. this part of the problem such as the idea that covid does not make children is sick or that the shots can cause heart inflammation. experts are saying that's absolutely not true. in fact, you're more likely to get heart inflammation from covid. then from the vaccine and state senator scott wiener has introduced a bill that would allow children 12 years and older to get the vaccine without parental permission. that also applies to not just any shot, but not just covid, including the flu or measles as well. wiener says kids should be able to get vaccinated without having to deal with any backlash from family members. >> and they literally had to quit their job. where they literally can't play sports anymore for the council over any of their friends, homes. that's a huge impact. 92 on these kids. growth development. >> almost 1 million california teenagers are unvaccinated against covid-19 for u c f doctors have signed onto a petition calling for covid to be treated as an endemic and to also rolled back restrictions. >> the doctors say that the covid threat has now been reduced with the new omicron variant and that there are treatments available to combat. severe side effects. the petition at change dot org is directed at california leaders and urges schools to bring kids back to class for in-person learning. the doctors say they are concerned about the state's restrictive policies saying that more children have died from suicide than the virus and that the vaccines are indeed working. >> number of kids who the committed suicide in twenty-twenty in california was over 130 and the number of kids who die from covid that year was around 10. >> the petition calls for mask mandates for lifting mask mandates for kids on february 15th. the same day that they're set to be lifted for adults or no later than february. 24th, which would be 12 weeks after the last school age, children became eligible to receive the covid-19 vaccine. meanwhile, the ceo of pfizer says that getting a yearly vaccine is better than getting a booster every 4 to 5 months in an interview with israeli media, the ceo says that boosters would not be as effective as an annual shot. he also says that pfizer is working to create a vaccine to fight omicron as well as other strains. he says that pfizer could be ready to file for approval for a redesigned vaccine. as soon as march. >> anti-vaccine mandate activists will be arriving in washington, dc for the defeat. the mandates rally that is set to take place tomorrow. thousands of protesters are expected at that rally and this is coming a week after dc mandated that people show proof of vaccination in order to receive services inside local businesses. that march is set to happen at 11 30 tomorrow morning. it goes from the washington monument, the lincoln memorial where speakers will take the stage. all right. breaking news tonight, the san and the changes that the new york governor is now calling for. kron 4 months during a developing story from new york city tonight where we're learning more details about an officer shot and killed while responding to a call last night in harlem. >> another officer and a suspect were injured during the shooting as well. reporter jennifer bisram gets us up to date on this story. >> dramatic moments after 2 nypd officers were shot in the line of duty in harlem friday apright and why pd officers, jason rivera and wilbert maura, we're responding to a domestic disturbance call involving a mother and her son. 47 year-old was sean mcneil. >> and an apartment here on 100 and 35th street. that's when police say mcneil swung open the bedroom door and started firing with this gun air 11 was over the tragic scene as officers blocked off several streets to rush to of their own to harlem officer rivera who joined the force in november of 2020. >> lost his life. he was just 22 officer morrow who is 27 and has been with the nypd for 4 years remains in critical condition. >> an emotional mayor and police commissioner hours after the harlem shooting denouncing the ambush style shooting and attacks against officers. >> i am not sure what word if any, will carry the weight of this moment and what we're feeling. we have 4 times this month rushed to the scene of nypd officers shot by violent criminals in possession of deadly illegal guns for police officers have been shot in just as many days in new york city and 5 altogether. this january, topping off an extremely violent week and start to today back at the scene near adam clayton, powell and malcolm x boulevards. >> there was a youth huddle and prayer vigil. young new yorkers prayed for peace and an end to gun violence out on probation for a drug conviction and he has several prior out of state arrests in harlem, new york, jennifer bisram news nation. >> to the east bay now or a private memorial service was held this morning in el serino for a police officer. jared bernstein. he was killed in a car accident on i-80 january 9th, which was on his 26th birthday. bernstein joined the department in february of 2020. his colleagues say he was humble and hey, tenacious crime fighting spirit. in a statement, the e-street a police department says officer bernstein was, quote, everything a purse could hope for in a police officer, citizen teammate, son, brother and friend. meanwhile, oakland police say it is sending more officers to east oakland. >> the department says it is sending 48 officers to that area because of the high number of calls for service along with violent crime. with the addition of 48 officers, police department. >> and myself plan to work with our community members to bring equity east oakland, to maker community members feel safe in their own homes. >> opd says this is all part of a new implementation of a 6 area patrol plant. >> to the north to the north bay. now in santa rosa, police are asking for your help to locate 2 suspects who they say robbed a cvs pharmacy last night and mendocino avenue. police say 2 african american men went behind the counter and demanded cash and medications. one of the employees was then beaten by the suspects and had to be taken to the hospital. when police arrived, the suspects had already left. they were last seen running towards steel lane. they're described as around 18 years old about 5 feet, 9 inches tall. they were both wearing masks. there is a reward being offered up to $2500 for any information leading to their arrest. a spokesman for actor and former california governor arnold schwarzenegger says that he is doing okay tonight. >> after a car crash yesterday in los angeles. it happened yesterday afternoon. the 74 year-old was behind the wheel of that black suv that you see is on 2 wheels. when police got to the scene, they say his car was on top of that red toyota prius, a woman involved in the crash was taken to the hospital for an injury to her head, but is expected to be ok. investigators say they're still trying to piece how this all went down, but do say they do not believe that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. whether time now a live look outside at the golden, not the golden gate bridge, but the bay bridge on this saturday night, folks out and about our meteorologist rodriguez is joining us now with a look at. >> what are sunday will look like. >> yeah, we're going to try. beach hazard is conditions right along our bay area coastline where we could see dangerous rip currents as high as 3 to 6 feet starting sunday afternoon and lasting through monday afternoon. i know it's going to be tempting to head into the waters, but just a heads up there because we are tracking that dangerous surf, even with those mild and dry conditions continuing for the 2nd half of the weekend. but radar for not seeing a cloud in the sky. thanks to those northerly winds pushing away all of that marine layer out of the bay area coastline. so dense, low clouds and fog not going to be an issue. and for your sunday morning and into your afternoon, starting in ending the day with plenty of sunshine. so we are tracking calmer conditions tonight than what we saw just 24 hours ago. temperatures as you head out the door, quite the spread between the coast in our inland valleys in the east bay. check out livermore. 45 degrees already 13 degrees cooler. the downtown san francisco, flirting with 60's. and just to put it in perspective, this should be our average daytime high today for downtown san francisco. but we're finally cooling down to that at this 8 o'clock hour to 58 degrees. so it was an exceptionally mild, but beautiful day out there. i know we need the rain, but it looks like a rain chance outlook looking great in the extended forecast. but first, let's take a look at our overnight lows cooler forecast because of the calmer northerly winds. 39 degrees for concord in livermore, santa rosa as well. but in the mild mid 40's around the bay area, shoreline daytime highs tomorrow, widespread low to mid 60's. a little bit cooler than yesterday. santa rosa cooling down more than 10 degrees warming up into the mid 70's. but tomorrow mid 60's. so still going to be a few degrees above average. but future cast for showing our rain outlook looking great in the extended forecast end of january and early february, it looks like we have a best chance of wet weather. but for the next 7 days going to stay mild. but then seasonal weather returns on tuesday. very sunny outlook until we start to notice an increase in cloud cover by next weekend. back to jonathan. just staying. >> thank you for and for your money tonight pointed other crypto currencies. those prices it's not clear when or even if people might need another vaccine dose for protection against covid. researchers at uc davis are saying they're examining that. >> calling the first 2 as the primary series and then the 3rd doses a booster dose. you know, it's possible that maybe 3 doses initially are the appropriate primary immunization schedule. and then the boosters will then be done on a yearly or every other year basis. we just don't know. we're just learning as we go along. >> israel has already approved a 4th shot as a booster. doctors do know it would not be feasible to expect people to get a booster shot every 6 months. but there is always the possibility of a future variants for covid emerging and we would not know how effective our current vaccines and boosters would be against that. new variant. >> scientists are now studying if the chemical cbd could be effective in the covid-19 fight. a recent study published by researchers at the university of chicago found that a drug approved by the fda to treat epilepsy currently showed promise in human lung cells and mice. study found that cbd, which is found in cannabis plants doesn't prevent covid infections, but does appear to block the replication of the virus. researchers warn that the effects were limited strictly to high concentrations of cbd. they suggest that clinical trials should take next. and the study was published in science advances. >> today marks the 49th anniversary of roe v wade marking nearly half a century since the court legalized abortion nationwide. the annual march of life in summit. >> we're tracking fortunately above average snowfall. so this year's snow packed still tracking about 111% of normal. as far as that average goes for the snow pack. so even though we've had a dry spell for the last couple of weeks, fortunately still holding steady. i love to see it above 100%. still can't get over that. let's take a live look at radar we are starting to cool down into the 40's, far inland valleys in the east bay, but still in the upper 50's for downtown san francisco. overall, great weather. if you're out celebrating the forty-niners win because this is just huge. i was so excited watching the game to radar for, though, for south lake tahoe, very dry, calm conditions. lake wind advisory no longer in effect for this year. and we're tracking not only that, but also a lot of sunshine for the 2nd half the weekend. temperatures warming up into the low 40's for truckee and south lake tahoe. and then that gradual warming trend will continue peaking on monday to 47 degrees. before we gradually cool down into the mid 40's and temperatures out there right now for your bay area forecast 40's and 50's. so right now, livermore and dublin in the mid 40's. but mid 50's for oakland, upper 50's for downtown san francisco. petaluma though 46 degrees with low to mid 50's for most of our north bay valleys and temperatures tomorrow looking great. a little bit cooler tomorrow compared to today. i know mild weather was definitely spoiling weather for us here in the bay area. certainly love the warmth, but we need the rain. looks like it won't arrive until late role to take in this conflict as an invasion. fear is looming tonight. >> workers at a starbucks in santa cruz filed a union petition yesterday. the first california store pushing to organize employees of the coffee giant. 22 of that stores. 31 workers have signed those union cards. employees say they're not fully compensated for their hours or are scheduled for their shifts on their days off without being consulted. workers are also complaining of threats of violence and don't feel supported by store management. they hope that union representation will give workers a means to address these issues without the fear of retaliation. a spokesperson for starbucks says the company is opposed to a union but will respect the legal process. kyle rittenhouse has been hit with a civil lawsuit by the parents of one of the men he killed. >> during protests in kenosha, wisconsin, back in 2020, the lawsuit filed by the family of anthony huber last jury found rittenhouse not guilty for killing hoover and another man cooper's parents originally filed a lawsuit against the city of conocian along with the kenosha police department but added rittenhouse along with 7 law enforcement agencies so far, rittenhouse has not commented on that lawsuit. >> the arizona democratic party formally censored senator krysten sinema this morning. the executive board cited her refusal to change the filibuster rules to pass voting rights reform, which was in effect, siding with republicans cinema and senator joe manchin of west virginia where the 2 democrats to vote against filibuster reform that derail the passage of voting rights legislation, a top priority for democrats and president biden. developing news out of russia tonight where its troops know ramping up military exercises along its border with ukraine. >> that's all taking place. despite threats of severe sanctions that could possibly hubble russia's already strained economy. as many as 100,000 russian troops are currently temperature department today. 5 to 10 degrees above average for most bay area. cities warming up into the mid to upper 60's when we should be in the upper 50's to low 60's this time of year. the winner santa rosa, 17 degrees above average. 75 degrees for your afternoon highs when you should be at 58 degrees. remember, it's technically winter, according to the calendar, but it certainly felt more like spring out there in the bay area when tracker for tracking calmer winds. fortunately sar wind advisories and high wind warnings for the highest peaks in the north bay have been allowed to expire as of this afternoon radar for the tracking a very calm, dry night. going to see cooler temperatures this evening because of the calmer winds and also that lack of blanket of cloud cover. we're
