We will talk live with chp about the steps that they are trying to take to crack down on sideshows in the East Bay. But first with less than 48 hours to go before Election Day here in california. Republican front runner. Larry elder in Los Angeles today and reveal some serious accusatio Larry Elder is making a last Minute Push for voters. He was at an event in Los Angeles today. The leading republican gubernatorial candidate in hosting a Press Conference this afternoon in Los Angeles. Joined by actress rose mcgowan who is now accusing Governor Gavin Newsoms Wife jennifer, of attempting to bribe in silence or from speaking out against harvey weinstein, abuses. Governor newsome denying those claims today while he was out on the campaign trail. Kron fours also reached out to the Governors Office for more details. So far we have yet to hear back. And Tomorrow President biden will be campaigning with Governor Newsom on the final day before Election Day. He will not be making an appearance in the Bay Area. But newsome and President Joe Biden will be at an event in long Beach And President biden there as one of the latest major democrats to be campaigning for. Governor Gavin Newsom. That includes Barack Obama and Vice President Kamala Harris will plenty has changed since california voters removed a democratic governor from office 18 years ago. The associated press says that the golden state now has more. Democrats and independents and far fewer republicans. The state also has more latino and younger voters. All those factors tend to favor democratic Governor Gavin newsome. There are now 22 million voters in california compared to 15 million back in 2000, 3 over that time. Democrats have also added 3 million dollars to their ranks while republicans numbers have remained flat. Polls are showing most latino voters oppose, getting rid of Governor Newsom. But some political strategists say newsom should not take the latino vote for granted. Most that little cold. Recent campaign stops in heavily hispanic Populated Area show that winning the latino vote is key for both parties. California is home to 15 million latinos making up roughly 40 of the states population. One poll from U C Berkeley has about 56 of likely latino voters keeping newsom as governor. Thats lower than the 64 of latinos who supported the governors initial bid in 2018. Thats according to Exit Polling that latino vote is consequential to whether or not Governor Gavin newsome stays in the Governors Mansion. One of the things that is going to determine how latinos vote is whether or not they will vote. And so again, this is going to be about investing in turn out to drive turnout. But some former democrats who voted to put newsom in office almost 3 years ago are now saying theyre going to vote to kick him out. Pedro of alaska says its now because of new sums. Heppell critical behavior. He didnt use the mask. Many sitting down at the french Laundry Restaurant and he anticipates Everybody Kind of like going do it, but youre not leading by example and especially with that. A crisis like this requires leadership. Now, he also says many small businesses like his parents were adversely impacted during the statewide lockdowns when the pandemic hit the republicans are thinking Thats Part of some of the reasons has been xr swing their way. And to get a better perspective on everything thats happening before Election Day, which is tuesday. September 14th. Were joined live now by zoom with david mckeown, a political Science Professor at Sonoma State University. Thank you for joining us. This right. David. Well, be with thank you. We appreciate you joining us here on kron, 4 were less than 48 hours away until Election Day. What should californians expect as we lead up to tuesday. And what can we expect after. So theres a couple of elements here. One is that the governor has change the race over the last 4 weeks by doing that, he was able to get those what we call regular habitual voters a more democratic older whiter, regular voters. The folks that are not the emerging electorate. The piece you just had on the lead and talk about the emerging electorate. The Ap Piece to talk about how california is changing. Theyre going after those voters here at the end. But the early vote certainly favored that they raise a lot of money. Thats important. And obviously getting Barack Obama on on air it. Bernie sanders on air doing all of that has really helped them now, Larry Elder get the most votes on the second question and the second question is not likely to matter. It looks like from the early vote and what were seeing now. More votes have been cast and we saw and the 2003 recall at this point it looks like the governor is going to win handily hes going to win strongly on that. No side question. Then it will become happens between now and signing bills until early october midoctober. And what he does in terms of the national state. All of that is hugely important for next years midterms. Thats all thats at stake over the next 48 hours not that much. Just, you know, politics across the country. Okay. Lets talk about some of the polls, though. The last major one came out. It puts 60 of voters likely to say voting no. Which leaves about 3940 who would say yes, this is the first poll that showed that Governor Newsom would be back the recall by about 20 percentage points. Thats where we stood on friday. Theyre still 48 hours to go. How much of that you think will change or if anything, between. Now when the polls close on tuesday. So now that we have voting centers open in that were closer. We see more republican ballots coming in here at the end. So that should close the gap. So lets say the gap closes a little bit. Its been consistently somewhere between double digits and up to 20 points in terms of the difference on that. Yes, know that that you mentioned there. If the governor and his Team Win by more than 14 points. Say 15 to 20 thats what we would call a if you follow thats if its if its less than 15 of its between double digits. 10 points and 14 points. Thats a very solid win. Anything in single digits is a strong wind but really because it fundamentally the ground is more democratic than republican and republicans have had difficulty bringing out their voters here until the end. That means democrats have locked in their vote and that puts the governor in a really strong position before Joe Biden even gets here tomorrow and making that last push headed into tuesday. So watch the margin between yes and no. On tuesday will know that because the returns are coming in strong with more voters than weve ever seen potentially a going here in california. Okay. We saw a number of big top democratic names being trotted out in the last few weeks. How big of a difference is that going to make especially because early on we we werent hearing any of these names. We saw very tight. Margin with the governor potentially being ousted out. How big of a difference more those big names are are those big names making with regards to that big separation were seeing right now. And with President Biden campaigning with him tomorrow. Yeah, im a good Point Side there by both of you because a month ago that Gavin Newsom was under water. They were losing this race. But by bringing in and scaring the progressive base growing that progressive base and getting those voters out. Those voters that elected Gavin Newsom in 2018. Thats been hugely important kind of move forward and fast forward from that. Can they grow the base where younger voters always difficult to get them out in a special election held in middle of september and look next voters and that emerging voter subset. That will be an important voter. Subset will want to look at the returns to see aow they voted and that enthusiasm and whether that was moving forward. We have a prediction or our model of about 15 turnout. Its going to be much higher for the lot next fall population. We dont know exactly what that number is. And if that number is delivering 56 60 somewhere in the 55 to 60 range for Gavin Newsom that also helps in and puts him in a strong position again on September 15th the day after the recall. Do you think enough people get how significant this election is if only 30 of the California Population is turned in their ballots. So far. Yeah. I mean, its its huge here, right . Gavin newsom were to lose after Andrew Cuomo has left the Governors Mansion in New York and then are all kind of focus will turn to Kamala Harris and to Nancy Pelosi and that would give them a huge vote with trumpism in finding their identity moving into the midterm elections. It would push aside the biden agenda which is going to be challenged over the next couple of weeks. Septembers a very tough month for the biden administration and move things forward. So democrats and particularly the Newsome Team wanted deliver if from havent they want to deliver a strong rebuke to this recall because they think that puts them come january and one of the leading places for democrats nationally headed into those mid terms in 2022 a rebirth the revitalization of his political fortunes. All eyes will be on california and the golden state in the next coming days as we. All wait to see how this all plays out. David mckeown would Sonoma State University as always, we appreciate your time as well. As the knowledge here on kron 4. We cant wait to talk to you in in the coming days leading up to tuesday. Well, thank you both very much. Its a pleasure to be with you. Even on a sunday and you also be with us on tuesday night. If you got that know yet. All day, all night, all be here. Still ahead, fire crews are racing to stop flames from spreading. At a North Bay Shopping Center and now theres a man facing arson charges. Details next. For your help tonight. While many scientists predict covid will become as mild as the common cold. Eventually it will still pose a serious challenge during flu season. Some believe covid will create a dual viral threat every year during flu season, a former Fda Commissioner says the first line of defense needs to be more aggressive efforts to get people vaccinated for the flu and covid. He also predicts that Work Related Mandates for both shots will become more common. And today we definitely saw a warmup from coastal valleys and that trend is going to continue through tuesday until we cool down this upcoming weekend with a slight chance an argument over one Car Crash ended with both drivers killed in another car accidents. Such a wild scene. This happened overnight in berkeley on the east lanes of i 80 near university avenue. Chp says 2 men involved in the first crash. Got out of their cars right in the middle of traffic started arguing the driver of a 3rd car swerved to avoid hitting their cars. But instead hit both men who died at the scene so far their names have not been released investigators say they do not believe that drugs or alcohol played a factor in that crash. And now tonight were staying in contact with California Highway Patrol to learn more details about an early Morning Freeway Shooting that happened in concord. It happened just before 7 oclock this morning on highway 2. 42 just north of i 6 ad. Theres no word on if anyone was hurt or possible motive in the shooting. But we will have updates as soon as they become available. Well post them on our website. Kron 4 Dot Com or bring them to you right here during front for his son prime time. Police have arrested a man for arson after lighting a fire behind the bay village Shopping Center in Santa Rosa. This happened around 11 oclock in the morning and this is what it looked like after the fire witnesses told police that the Suspect Gc steven the wiki lit an object on fire and dropped it in the dry grass behind the Shopping Center and then did something the flan fanned the flames. Firefighters were able to quickly put the fire out before it any serious damage. Tonight, were getting our first look at new Police Body Cam video of a fatal Police Shooting in northern california. Police say the suspect was armed with a knife. We do want to warn you the video youre about to see can be tough for some of you to watch. Haha. The scene unfolding last month in Del Norte county near the oregon, california border. Once again, this happened last month in that particular area. The sheriffs deputies say they convinced 38 Yearold Robert Anderson to drop his knife, but he refused to step away from it. Moments later he picked up the knife again and then charged at officers prompting them to open fire. Anderson hit several times from those bullets. He died at the scene. His family now claims the shooting was racially motivated an investigation into what happened is still ongoing may be tough to believe especially given the climate surrounding the election. But crime is actually starting to trend down across america. According to new data collected by the crime Monitoring Group 3rd way. But the news not all good. While most crimes are on the downside. Homicides are up in twentytwenty from where they were in 2019. The crime stats, though, are heading in a better direction. In the Bay Area. Another crime that appears to be heading in the wrong direction. The number of side shows that weve been seeing. You know, some video now from the latest one was busted up in san jose. But its a problem that were seeing on streets throughout the Bay Area, including oakland and thats why the California Highway Patrol and the Oakland Police Department and the city. Theyve all teamed up now as the new partnership in an effort to try to stop that and other street accidents and crime says right to talk more about the steps that theyll be taking a crack down on the side shows. We are joined live by Captain Steve from the California Highway Patrol to talk more about what they are seeing and how they plan to do this. Captain perea, thanks so much for joining us here on kron, 4 news at night. Good evening. Thanks for having me tonight. We appreciated. Can you talk a little bit about the partnership between both of these agencies. How this came to be and what your role will be. Several weeks ago we were maryland chapter coming oakland and assist our partners on the Oakland Police Department with such as you mentioned, sideshow activity. And it really just proactive Traffic Enforcement of the california vehicle code. We started our deployment tonight. And we have approximately. 34 corridor, burgers and 22 intersections that Oakland Police Department has identified for us as what they call their high Injury Network and these are places throughout the entire city. They basically have high crash statistics and our goal. Our role is to really change driver behavior. The Mission California have patrol has always been to save lives and were looking forward to assist in this endeavor with the Oakland Police Department. So its just having a presence there. Youll officers deputies parked in cars doing patrols. What would that actually look like. So our Back Tonight we started at 3 oclock this afternoon. We started our way into theres some orders there that they identified for us. And its really law enforcement. So were actually making traffic stops. And then taking the appropriate enforcement action. If the driver ah, that couldnt be anything from a citation to a verbal warning in some taking somebody to jail for dui. So its really about those what we call primary collision factors that play a tremendous role. In causing injury or in some cases fatal collision. This to to the folks, the community in oakland. I can tell you that i was out there tonight. Traffic was moderate and then heavy at times. And i know that myself and my partner, we actually several Dozen Traffic stops. And again, in some cases where issuing citations issuing warning. Our goal is to change driver. He had a so that it benefits the entire Driving Community as well as pedestrians. Right now. You guys are door right now that partnership does include Sideshow Enforcement and other traffic. Containment and other things of that nature, any id on if that could expand at some point. Well, it does include the sideshow and i have to tremendous credit to the Oakland Police Department for providing the intelligence when those sideshow activities are are scheduled in and they look different social media platforms and they provide as much of a heads up even prior to this deployment. And so because a lot of times these sideshow tease end up on our freeway or start on our Freeway Travel throughout the Bay Area. So yes, i talked to is definitely something that were again, too. And something that will be working together. Were collaborating the radio with our opd partners when there is Word Someone is witnessing some reckless driving. Then our units will deploy to that area and again to do as much proactive enforcement fortunately will ever be able to get everyone obviously. The goal is to make an impact. Whether its making traffic stop taking some of the jail county, a vehicle for 30 days. So this is going to be happening every weekend through the end of september has there ever been a partnership like this with chp with any other California City or community. I know mayor libby shaft had to ask the governor for permission. Approval in order for this to happen. What does it say about what had been happening in in oakland on the streets that that this partnership is now in place. Well, this office here in historically has had a great relationship with the city of oakland. And we have historically worked with opd. I believe since a 2007. Several iterations of governors have through the City Management here for us to go in and assist with things like proactive Traffic Enforcement. And so i believe from 2007 to 2014. There were several several months throughout those years where we actually did partner up with them. The fantastic Working Relationship with opd and City Management here. And you know, i can tell you that tonight having been boots on the ground. You know, the majority of the folks that were out there. Well, were in traffic stops were very, very appreciative of us being there. We appreciate that support. Tempest a parade with the California Highway Patrol. Thank you so much for your time tonight on kron 4 news at night. I will switch it up down. Talk about our Weather Forecast as we take a live look outside right now here at the city of San Francisco. City hall lit up in red, white and blue in honor of early voting before the Recall Election on tuesday so very patriotic out there and radar for. Were tracking some of that marine layer low clouds and fog mainly impacting those of you at Half Moon Bay. Pretty clear, though every where else but future cast for tracking showers in ukiah could bring about a 10th of an inch of rain there and then lesser amounts as it starts to shift to the southwest in the Bay Area. So primarily impacting the Bay Area coastline and even the North Bay really just racism out, though. But if that track does trend a little bit more southward. We could get some more measurable rain hopefully for all of the Bay Area. So certainly going to stay tuned on that in the coming days. But temperatures out there right now. Widespread 50s and 60s for most of the coast and even East Bay shoreline as you make your Way Inland and still in the low 80s with Half Moon Bay currently at 57 degrees and conquered in livermore. You dont even need a sweater if youre heading out tonight in the mid 70s at this near 10 Oclock Hour with when tracker for light a breezy wind speeds. There. Very seasonal temperatures, though, throughout the East Bay shoreline with Oakland And Hayward in the mid 70s and upper 60s for downtown San Francisco. But novato flirting with 90s at 89 degrees. So a little bit warmer there in Mountain View in the low 80s and taking a look ahead at your next 7 day outlook. Were going to warm up on tuesday.
