bill is karl chan with the oakland chinatown chamber of commerce. thank you for joining us here tonight. and they have plenty of attsntion. of course. why are you concerned about senate bill 82, what do you think that it will do that will hurt the asian community. >> well, basically united beginning with, you know, much sba to to, but they don't want also had an opportunity talking citizens in in a lawsuit. when explain to me what to what it wants. we do know and by talking to alameda county district attorney's office so they spring nation is quite strict bullet. it will bring down with what this as long as that would come some not seriously hurt. that will be it will be coming up a guest. in addition to those already 7 could be early. and because of the senate bill. and she'll many people. only a will is against asians and asian community and especially seniors. so what this bill. it just would lead to the past so they need be possibly not more attacks. could be coming not 20 asian community, but i think is going to be impacting the entire company heat within the state of california. >> have you talked at all with a state senator nancy skinner, who is the author of this be us an example. in not till i know is i want to move and he was robbed by 2 suspects and let's be not you know, turning upside it's long past the suspect use any weapons and you will and that the suspect and victnms so call. not seriously hurt. so in that would you you know, just just a minor crime. so with that petty theft. so that means. they can walk free easy. >> i think we also have a statement from an nc skinner's about your concerns we could put up and. read to people. now she was saying that why she's supporting. this is that the brutal attack on the elderly gentleman in oakland on tuesday was an absolute travesty and i strongly condemn the recent a spate of violence assaults on lily asian residents in our community. but i must set the record straight about my legislation sb 82 if enacted sba to to will not change or reduce the criminal penalty on violent assaults such as the one that happened tuesday or any of the other violent attacks on elderly asian residents that have occurred recently. so when you hear the keeps going. the purpose of us being to 2, which is supported by the state's penal code revision committee and judges throughout california is to clarify state law so that nonviolent cases of theft are not charged at of. as violent felonies. so car when you hear that our explanation of wanting to change it and be able to take out terms like force and fear which they say are interpreted loosely and then turn something like a petty theft like shoplifting, then treated like a felony robbery. do you agree with her at all. is there any compromise that could be made. >> what it was and i don't believe that sunday that contention. public testing and but it will be also ewing a lot of his sign intended consequences. and so we actually also sending the wrong message for those who are committing crime saying that, hey, it's ok as long as you don't the victims, you know, see her. so i think, you know, this is a long time. but again, it's going to be impacting a lot those victims. definitely i understand. you know, what has sent one. but again, when we do fact checking and basically. what what is and is saying, saying 8 people coming, company does come may not be prosecuted. >> all right. a lot of information that go through tonight coach and with the oakland chinatown chamber of commerce. thanks so much for spending time with us here on kron 4
