Signs that the pandemic is getting worse before it gets better here in california and across the country. The number of people who have died. And those hospitalized are reaching record levels while the first case of the mutated covid19 strain is now confirmed in california. Our state has shattered the record for the number of covid related deaths yesterday. State Health Officials say 432 people. More than 432 people have died from the virus. Although the figure was likely elevated because of the lag in reporting over the holidays. There are now more than 30,000 confirmed new cases of covid19 and the rate of positive tests over the last 14 days is now 12. 2 . Our state is also seeing a surge in hospitalizations the number of Covid Patients has more than doubled since the end of last month. The early data suggests yes, the current vaccine that we have available from pfizer and moderna should be effective against these particular strains. Doctor grace lee would stand for health says that vaccines are proving effective against it. But she says doctors are still plenty concerned the concern is that if it is more transmissible even though our seem protective measures will be effective. Just that we wont be able to get vaccine out at a enough into the population as quickly as we would like. Lee says until there is enough vaccine available for everyone folks should still continue to practice social distancing hand washing and wearing face masks. We dont believe at this point it it changes anything about the severity of the former telomere aids. But obviously we want to avoid infection as much as possible and to protect as much of the public as we can. The discovery comes as california continues to shatter its own daily records for covid cases. Wednesday, the golden state saw more than 34,000 new cases the rise in cases along with hospitalizations now causing the number of icu beds across the state to drop. The bay area now stands at 7. 5 icu capacity at the current rate lee says that hospitals across the bay area could be forced into tough decisions on who lives and who yes were all for what we call crisis standards of to be able to make those tough decisions. Our hope is that. Again we can encourage the public in the community continue to its here to the protective measures that need to be put in place. And that was Jonathan Mccall reporting for us this morning, the man who contracted the strain is currently quarantining at home. Officials say the man did not travel which doctor lee says likely means the man got the virus in the community which likely means more cases will be popping up very soon. But he does not believe it will be more deadly than the current virus. Fauci also told the governor early indications suggest that the vaccine will still work on this particular strain, adding that its common for these types of viruses to mutate. Im not surprised that you have a case of mike leigh more cases in california no indication at all that increases the virulence and by various, i mean the ability to make you sick or kill you it doesnt seem to make it more strong in that pretty viruses. They make a living at a mutating they love to mutate the more you replicate the more you mutate so when you have a lot of virus thats circulating the community. It means its infecting a lot of people its its replicating a lot and when you replicate you mutate. Fauci also agreed that the availability of skinny availability and distribution of the current vaccine is less than what was promised, but he believes that the u. S.
