There are 19. 5 million while and a lot of them live in california believe it or whats the whats the percentage who live in california of those 19. 5 well, theyre spread about 50 of the veterans are spread across 10 of the top well, the top 10 states and california is number one so the exact number i cant really say, but. California is a popular place to live for for the veterans. There are as far as the world war one veterans we lost our last surviving in 2011 and he was a 110 years old wow. What stories he could tell. Oh definitely definitely. And we still we still veterans from world war 2 the korean war of course vietnam as well. Right as soon as world war 2 we had about 2 of the veterans remaining that are living. Theyre all in those that are living there in their mid 90s, men and older. Korean war there in the their mid to late 80s. A lot of id say 50 of our veterans are are from the gulf war and post gulf war de that make them make sense a lot of when we think about veterans day a lot of civilians. Mainly are a bit apprehensive a bit nervous on how to approach a vet to say thank you for your service. Ride it and its its nice to say thank you for your service is also nice to say welcome home, especially the Vietnam Veterans, they never received a very warm welcome when they came home but take it a step farther and asked them if theres anything you know asking about 3rd time in the service they might have some stories to tell a lot of veterans want to share but they really dont know what to our how to share their their experiences buy them a cup of ask them if theres anything that they need or they need any help at that time but just going to be a good listener and start a conversation. Those are great tips again as we get ready for thinking about veterans day for next year, this is something that comes up all the time about this time of year lets go ahead and turn our attention now to health care for veterans because this is this is a very big issue it has for for the past several years. And frankly its its very heartbreaking to think about just how a lot of vets feel that theyve been forgotten. Yes, and. When it comes to being a veteran just having veteran status is a risk factor for Heart Disease i worked so hard all g so i see this across the board. Veterans are at a higher risk of having circulatory issues also abnormal heart rhythms. They also are at higher risk of having being or physical health having Poor Mental Health and most of them are smokers and thats cause is 10 times more deaths amongst the veterans. Why why are why the percentage events so high when it comes to smoking is that is that a habit that that came when they were actually in the service we see all these movies and things were vets or our soldiers and sailors are always smoking is thats a is that true first of all that stereotype true. Yes will we back back when we used to stand cigarettes to the veterans and also it was a way to kind of relax as well some of the stories i hear is that the sergeant stay said you can either have a smoke break or go do pushups the snow it was also a way to align with their superiors there. Is it was just no way socialize and in a way. Going back to the Overall Health issues and Heart Disease i would guess that smoking plays a large role in the increase in heart and respiratory us issues for vets right. Right thats why its just such a vicious circle all these risk factors are all interrelated one causes the other does being a veteran. And having being a smoker thats a risk factor. So thats causing a problem also a lot of Mental Health issues like depression and as well as ptsd and depression that said predictor of Heart Disease and also a predictor of early death to so that needs to be addressed they found that once they address the depression can control that that their risk for cardiovascular disease goes down. Well, i understand that theres also a connection between ptsd and heart and circulatory issues as well. Right and smoking a lot of people that are have ptsd or smokers in and trying to get them through a Smoking Cessation program, the failure rate is really high all as you can see theyre all interrelated. But pre ptsd is very prevalent in amongst the when you look at you break it down by war. The Vietnam Veterans that about 30 so 30 out of every 100 veterans has ptsd throughout their lifetime that is so sad care and so understandable as well given what theyve gone through. And thats forcing Health Officials to bring back some restrictions. Thats right lets take a look at the current status of each county on the states tiered reopening map starting with contra costa santa clara and marin counties theyve all announced new restrictions as a friday, so that means that they are expected to reverse course and adopt stricter measures next week Contra Costa County will begin shutting down indoor operations for restaurants, gyms and other businesses. So now theyre going to be closing indoors for several establishment altogether so gyms no more into working out this all starts next week on tuesday in addition to that Indoor Dining theyre doing rid of that throughout the county and over at Movie Theaters are not shutting down the theaters altogether theyre going to make sure that the Concession Stands inside of those theaters or shut down again now none of these businesses are going to figure out what steps are going to take to put a lot of these new developments in place are they going to have workout schedule outdoors thats a question were asking now in terms of Indoor Dining and Outdoor Dining moving things outside with it being really cold over the next few weeks are a lot of people going to want to come to these restaurants and so you also have some customers and people who live throughout the county. Our Health Expert karen owen joins me to about that and she works for the department of veteran affairs and she has some insight on veterans can even though its passed we felt it was important enough to revisit this. Lets start by getting a sense of just how many vets are here in the u. S. There are 19. 5 million while and a lot of them live in california believe it or whats the whats the percentage who live in california of those 19. 5 well, theyre spread about 50 of the veterans are spread across 10 of the top well, the top 10 states and california is number one so the exact number i cant really say, but. California is a popular place to live for for the veterans. There are as far as world war one veterans we lost our last surviving in 2011 and he was a 110 years old wow. What stories he could tell. Oh definitely definitely. And we still we still veterans from world war 2 the korean war of course vietnam as well. Right as soon as one or 2 we have about 2 of the veterans remaining that are living theyre all in those that are living there in their mid 90s, men and older. Korean war there in the their mid to late 80s. A lot of id say 50 of our veterans are are from the gulf war and post gulf war does that make them make sense a lot of when we think about veterans day a lot of civilians. Mainly are a bit apprehensive a bit nervous on how to approach a vet to say thank you for your service. Ride it and its its nice to say thank you for your service is also nice to say welcome home, especially the Vietnam Veterans, they never received a very warm welcome when they came home but take it a step farther and asked them if theres anything you know asking about 3rd time in the service they might have some stories to tell a lot of veterans want to share but they really dont know what to or how to share their their experiences buy them a cup of ask them if theres anything that they need or they need any help at that time but just going to be a good listener and start a conversation. Those are great tips again as we get ready for thinking about veterans day for next year, this is something that comes up all the time about this time of year lets go ahead and turn our attention now to health care for veterans because this is this is a very big issue it has for for the past several years. And frankly its its very heartbreaking to think just how a lot of vets feel that theyve been forgotten. Yes, and. When it comes to being a veteran just having veteran status is a risk factor for Heart Disease i worked hard all g so i see this across the board. Veterans are at a higher risk of having circulatory issues also abnormal heart rhythms. They also are at higher risk of having being or physical health having Poor Mental Health and most of them are and thats cause is 10 times more deaths amongst the veterans. Why why are why the percentage events so high when it comes to smoking is that is that a habit that that came when they were actually in the service we see all these movies and things were vets or our soldiers and sailors are always smoking is thats a is that true first of all that stereotype true. Yes will we back back when we used to cigarettes to the veterans and also it was a way to kind of relax as well some of the stories i hear is that the sergeant stay said you can either have a smoke break or go do pushups the snow it was also a way to align with their superiors there. Is it was a way socialize in a way. Going back to the Overall Health issues and Heart Disease i would guess that smoking plays a large role in the increase in heart and respiratory us issues for vets right. Right thats why its just such a vicious circle that has all these risk factors are all interrelated one causes the other does being a veteran. And having being a smoker thats a risk factor. So thats causing a problem also a lot of Mental Health issues like depression and as well as ptsd and depression that said predictor of Heart Disease and also a predictor of early death to so that needs to be addressed they found that once they address the depression can control that that their risk for cardiovascular disease goes down. Well, i understand that theres also a connection between ptsd and heart and circulatory issues as well. Right and smoking a lot of people that are have ptsd or smokers in and trying to get them through a Smoking Cessation program, failure rate is really high all as you can see theyre all interrelated.
