KRON KRON 4 News At 430am July 12, 2024

Destroyed or actually homes on Mountain Hawk drive thats in santa rosa kron fours dan kerman went to the sky hawk neighborhood to show us the damage. Were in the sky hawk neighborhood of santa rosa and as you can see behind me burned down homes, however this is not like 2017, yes. There are numerous homes that have burned but numerous homes are Still Standing its not like entire neighborhoods have burned down. Fire Officials Say thats because this fire is completely different than the one in 2017. This was not one solid wall of fire that moved in the city limits, its spotted in the city and sometimes some areas a mile ahead of itself. So a lot of areas with a lot of work that needs to be done. And we understand that the evacuations of affected 10s of thousands of in santa rosa as well as in Sonoma County. We definitely want to be able to get people back home but its going to potentially be several days in order to do that neighborhoods that have been evacuated include rincon valley. As well as skyhawk where we are Oakmont Molina and now Bennett Valley because the fire has gotten into an adele state park. Well smoke from the glass fire of course is affecting our air quality all across the bay area, the spare the air alert has been extended through friday. So were going to be dealing with this as we head into the weekend. Heres a look at the current air quality in the bay area right now you see little dots well you can see that the darker icons right there represents the areas that has the poorest air quality. It was just what a week ago 2 weeks ago that we were setting records and we were dealing with poor air quality because of the other fires that are burning in the bay area we finally got a little break in here we go again checking in with meteorologist john shrivel john whats in store for today. Well obviously some pockets of bad air as you noted robin, but improvements. And a lot of regards compared to yesterday which is definitely a bit of good news. Clear from our sutro tower looking at San Francisco little bit of fog has streamed into the bay this morning so do watch that as youre traveling in some pockets of poor visibility, including at the golden gate. You showed us those pockets of smoke that we saw just a second ago where youre seeing the most of it is right around the city of sonoma up to santa rosa and into portions of nap as well as we make our way through the day coastal areas are likely to see least to the smoke while the further inland you had in the north bay, your impact from that smoke is likely to be worse. Good news for winds that is a lot calmer out there this morning. The height of our wind event was sunday night into yesterday morning winds calmed into yesterday afternoon which was a welcome change. And this morning even calmer yet, most winds are actually pushing in from the coast and have a bit more moisture to them than what we saw yesterday which is going to help with humidity temperatures and of course fire spread so this is all very good news for the fire in the north bay light winds from the coast continue this morning all across the bay area and thats why youll notice some pockets of fog as you step outside and humidity a whole lot higher than it was yesterday air definitely not as parched and bone dry as what we had for monday. 50s and 60s for current temperatures, it is also a much cooler start to the morning. Lot of us were waking up to temperatures not just in the 80s but the upper 80s up in the north bay yesterday today weve traded those in for the 50s 60s for the north bay and the rest of the bay area. Later on today, its still going to be hot but not as hot as yesterday was with our inland highs that are warmest in the upper 90s and most bayside areas back down into the 80s. More on your forecast still ahead robin all right, thank you for the update john now lets get an update on traffic. Were taking a look. At your commute into San Francisco and were off to a really good start so nows your chance to come on in before it starts to get too heavy out there were pretty much delay free all the way across the upper deck and right through downtown San Francisco. Lets take a look at 92 the san mateo bridge connecting between hayward and send the tail were fine looking good in both directions. So far a little busy for the westbound side on the right. The busy does not mean that its just picking up out there more folks are heading to work and if thats you youre part of drive here westbound on 92, just get out there early bird within the next hour, so its going to be much much heavier so nows your chance to beat the rush which is on the way and were checking in on the north bay or that commute from the east bay to the north bay. A live look at the Richmond Sandra fell bridge west bound 5. 80 wide open here at the toll plaza so rough to get started. Well we have an evacuation map for you this is the evacuation map for napa county check it out on your screen keep in mind that the entire town of calistoga is under a mandatory Evacuation Order at last check no loss reported within the city limits, but there is significant damage and some of those surrounding areas. You see little area thats shaded in blue that area shaded in blue is under a mandatory evacuation, which means you need to go do not stick around. If youre caught in the area thats under a mandatory evacuation you will be stopped and questioned by authorities and escorted out so you dont want to be sticking around. And then we have the areas that are shaded in yellow which are under an evacuation warning which means it could turn into an order if so you need to have all of your Emergency Contacts your medication. Your belongings packed up and ready to go so if that warning torched turns into a mandatory order. You can be ready to get out you dont have to be wandering around your house looking for things at the last minute. Now there is an Evacuation Center thats open. You can always head over to the Cross Walk Church and the napa valley college. Those are your 2 options. Kron fours Maureen Kelly has more. Behind me you can see a long line of people outside the Crosswalk Community church. These are people who are waiting to get a Hotel Voucher because theyve been forced to flee their homes. I spoke to some who saw the flames. Very close to their front doors. It was just so much it was a great and i was like thats scary the 15 yearold saint helene a resident says this was the view outside her front door of her apartment complex her family grab their belongings and fled around 02 00am now theyre waiting with many others here at the Crosswalk Community churches county workers coordinating with the Red Cross Work to get them a Hotel Voucher feel kind of like scared and mike. We feel emotional because you dont know whats going to happen, you know what could happen like in the next hour words you dont know whats going on many people showing up here are bringing supplies for the evacuees even those. Who were forced to leave their homes themselves. Its nice to see the Community Coming together in times like this i mean you know is pretty close just a few weeks ago and as of last week. Were kind getting blue skies again and were like you know its coming going down now and it just shows that you can never really. Planned for anything you know you have to be ready to adjust and adapt to any moment and not so we did and now were just trying to use our resources to help the Greater Community and people may not have as many resources you do. The county says several nonprofits are collaborating to help the evacuees but because of coronavirus they really only want to be accepting cash and gift cards they will accept those here at the Crosswalk Community church as well as a few other locations as well as online we posted a link on our website kron 4 dot com. Maureen kelly kron 4 news. Lets check out an evacuation map this is actually an evacuation map for Sonoma County on your screen. You see those little red dots. That represents the heat signature for the shady fire. It is still going 0 contained. You have those little red orange areas there thats under a mandatory Evacuation Order. Keep in mind that the sonoma raceway has opened its campgrounds to evacuees who need a safe place to stay and sleep. They have 50 acres of space so they still have a lot of room and its located just across the street from the raceway right there on highway one 21. Kron fours michelle kingston reports. You can see the smoke in the distance, but you cant smell it here at sonoma raceway it is hot and it is windy. But for now it seems like its a safe place to stay if you have evacuated and need a place to sleep there are just 3 cars here now, but there is room for about 2000 campers one couple of daca waited from oakmont leaving their meadow ridge drive home at 10 last night it was very a lot of sirens. We saw a lot of people speeding out of theyll be sleeping in a tent, steve page, the president of sonoma raceway says there are showers bathrooms and tons of space for anyone who can bring attention are be or camper to the 50 acre site he says this fire reminds in all too much of the tubbs fire in 2017 very reminiscent. The tubbs fire started on a sunday night. Last night about 2. 30 in the morning. The dog was scratching at the door open the door and the smoke was just overwhelming you can see the ash falling in in our backyard, so it was very reminiscent of 3 years ago page says the space will be open and available for as long as it needs to be normally it be prepared in october now it seems to be. In prepared in august this open spaces across the street from the main entrance of sonoma raceway about a minute or so down highway one 21. Theres also security here for those staying the night at sonoma raceway michelle kingston kron 4 news. Several north Bay School Districts are actually canceling Distance Learning because of the wildfires they include the Bennett Valley Union School District kenwood School District valley Union School District. All right were going outside want to take a peek at the flames and the smoke from the glass fire in the north bay hills look at that khloe there in the background this is from pepper would last they see that fire still going strong still 0 contained. Fire crews are working hard and thank you to all the firefighters and the personnel out there on the front lines of battling this fire we definitely appreciate you. Well be right back stay with us. Welcome back everyone to times for 44, thanks for staying with who look at that weve heard reports of at least an inch of ash just building up on cars monday morning in the north bay. Yeah, this is video of ash is blanketing someones backyard in santa rosa. Doesnt look too good there. I dont know is it with the fire still going there. 0 1 contain like. Do you even bother cleaning that up to you even bother getting your car wash. Lets check in with meteorologist josh will see how the weather shaping up john you said earlier that fired and conditions are actually improving and the winds are improving to yeah definitely some improvements today, robin and seeing that all over the place not good i get it off your cars before anything else because it can actually harm the paint on your car and then maybe worry about the back yard a little bit later once air quality improves and you can get back out there. As this morning. Well you got a little bit of fog which is a very welcome sight. Foggo ways a sign of cool coastal air thats pushing in replacing yesterdays hot dry winds with some cool ocean air that is pushed back into the bay area resulting in higher humidity, cooler temperatures and overall calmer winds, those 3 things are what exactly we needed to talk about today after yesterdays factors, light winds around the vicinity of the class incident fires which is good news. Much calmer than at the same time yesterday but cooler as well and winds will remain light through the day not just for the north bay but all across the bay area it will be a steady and very light on shore breeze keeping us nice and cool compared to yesterday as for smoke it still remains and heavy in pockets up in the north bay, especially for portions of sonoma and napa counties right along the coastline seeing some relief as that cool coastal air pushes in helping to clean air up for coastal spots today as for temperatures today, noticeably cooler than yesterday 60s 70s in San Francisco. Yesterday mission in financial districts were in the 90s so this is like night and day compared to where we were daly city in Half Moon Bay back into the 70s but cooler than yesterday and mostly in the 80s right along the bay side with redwood 88 Mountain View of 89, youre still noticing. Its pretty toasty but its definitely not as hot as yesterday was san jose 92 while in the tri valley in the 90s today, no triple digits in this 4 zone forecast though thats the most noticeable change. Oakland at 82 today to lay how i 84 napa sonoma and young bill in the 90s as opposed to yesterdays triple digits. Santa rosa at 91 today. Now tomorrows temperature a huge check after that its all downhill temperatures fall into the 80s by the upcoming weekend. And that is thats going to be warmest many bayside areas only in the 70s. Robert. All right, thank you john lets check in on the morning commute now were taking a peek at the bay bridge heading into San Francisco. Its picking up every time we check in we have more and more traffic just rolling in but we dont have any big problems right now so easy going so far smooth all the way across the upper deck right through downtown San Francisco so come on in all right, were checking want to walk across the golden gate, no traffic issues but karl is in the way karl, the fog. Pretty thick this morning taking over the span we can not see the towers are going to the headlights maybe the wipers space yourself out dont tell gate when its hard to see like this take it easy across the span. Were also checking in on the Richmond Sandra fell west bound 5. 80 looking good so far an easy trip for into the north bay trouble free accident free hot spot free thats how we like it. Under 10 minutes to make it off to highway one o one well check more coming up a little bit later. Well the u. S. Has reported more than 7 million covid19 cases and more than 240,000 deaths, some hospitals and state still report just not having enough tests or ppe now lawmakers in washington are calling for investigations into whether the pentagon misspent funds meant to help deal with the pandemic washington dc correspondent alexandra le mon reports. Democratic lawmakers are demanding investigations into reports that the pentagon took 1 billion dollars in taxpayer money meant for ppe and covid19 testing and spent it on body armor and jet engine parts, its just outrageous that the pentagon would take 8 billion dollars away from one of the most powerful tools we have to stop the spread of coronavirus in a statement, the Defense Department calls the issue a misunderstanding and says the cares act didnt require the Defense Department to spend the extra 1 billion dollars only on medical resources its absolutely absurd. Oregon senator jeff merkley says everyone understood that the money was meant for ppe and testy and for the Defense Department to grab that to do just the traditional its bill the defense empire. Routine when americans are is an enormous betrayal of trust republican senator mike rounds says he spoke with Defense Department officials they thought they were following the intent. Of the law which would have allowed them to try to end pay and some of their smaller contractors that otherwise may have gone out of business still round says the senate will likely investigate but probably end up having some hearings on within within the Armed Services committee brands also said the gpvernment Accountability Office is already investigating the matter in washington, alexandra le mon.
