Youre watching kron 4 morning news at 7. Raging wildfires up and down the west coast. In fact its so bad that some of the worst air quality on the planet is right here in the bay area. I think blanket of smoke continues to hover over the bay area making it tough to breathe. And im healthy to stay outside. Good morning. Everybody, thank you so much for joining us on the kron 4 morning news, set saturday September Marty gonzales unfortunately that smokes expected to linger throughout the weekend. It is yet another spare the air day for the bay area, the 26th in a row. We want to get more from days far on that and look at the forecast heidi a good morning marty good morning it looks like were getting a little bit of sleight thinning of the smoke at least happening a lot of air quality the service is going to be lousy all weekend still continuing. With some improvement as we get into early next week because of some other factors are going to help out with the sky conditions to again this going to be gradual now lets give you couple pictures going on here the shot from u c berkeley we can see the foreground very nicely but off to the distance as the ground fog which has done a really big job across the bay, this the golden gate. And ground fog continues at the bay bridge toll plaza to as well so we have to get the sun up to kind of makes this out again, but the problem has been all of that haze of the smoke has been so high up that hasnt allowed us to heat up as well the ground to start this process. Its a little better today though, and this is what the fog projections are this is not the smoke this the fog that that part should clear out later this morning allowing for the sun at least to do its thing but having trouble getting through the smoke of then this comes back again it looks like late tonight and into tomorrow because we do have a little bit a slight change happening in the weather thats going to help us out a little bit those temperatures we have the upper 50s lining up the east bay shoreline inland as well. 40s and 50s mixture up to the north bay 60 san jose and for comparison sake from yesterday. Were kind of a mixture between a little bit up in a little bit down depending on your exact location for today s with all the fog a cellphone no delays though we should be taking care of the moisture part of the forecast as we approach new but still left with that hazy smoke into the afternoon a little bit of a slight improvement tomorrow with an onshore flow will get more into that coming up in just a bit more. All right dave thanks love to hear about an improvement, lets get to our top story this morning. The air in fact its so unhealthy in Contra Costa County that the Health Department there recommends that people stay indoors unless absolutely necessary kron fours reyna harvey live in orinda she has more on that rain hows it looking out there. Lardy its not looking great out here the air quality a little better than yesterday but still pretty awful were going to show you here in orinda the buildup of smoke here often the distance you can see right here. Thats what everybody is breathing in this morning. And its not healthy. I hear a cost Contra Costa County you have our air quality index showing pockets of air in the 200s in over 100 which is down from 300 still thats really bad stuff to breathe in over in Alameda County. Its the same story in oakland and hayward berkeley youve got purple and orange all across the map and in San Francisco, the air is pretty awful out there. Now Health Experts are warning people who think its ok still go out for long periods of time to take it easy and be mindful of the type of air that youre breathing in take a listen. You need go out for that walk here run and think hey you know i wasnt so bad i did ok you get home and youre in home. The triggers. Hes absolutely right. I actually mardy experience at first hand. I was out the first day reporting when all of this first happened and the air quality was really really awful. And you know you dont really realize it until you get home i got home start experiencing all type of issues so the most important thing as a back out here show you guys. Well gathered up their looks like out here to read across Contra Costa County. It is you reduce your activities outdoors if you can if you got to be out here for any reason want to make sure you keep a mask on your face but for now reporting out here in a random are the next time you see me ill be out of walnut creek will be checking out the air over there for now martin asked can i wear my cloth mask, my band and im asked year for covid19 thats not going to protect you from all the particles, especially the really tiny little ones that can get into your lungs and really do some damage so its important that you have a mask thats consistent with the Health Guidelines like the n 95 mask or stay indoors altogether seen people out here today a lot of people of the cloth mask, but really theyve just been picking up coffee from the neighboring restaurant here and getting back in their cars and going home so i keep your Time Outdoors to a minimum marty. All right time for you to get back in your car and well see in an hour in walnut creek, thanks a lot thats reyna harvey reporting for us from our end of this morning. Good morning welcome back from 4 morning news, 7. 14 this saturday morning were dealing with yet another spare the air day for the bay area. Its now 26 days in a row setting all types of records that we really dont want to set dates for has more on the forecast for us now heidi a good morning marty good morning, everybody and because of all of this going on its actually made it difficult to forecast the because of the models dont look at this intrusion above us. And has a domino effect of course we dont get a solar heating up the ground we cant get the proper mixing going on get rid of this stuff so one of the pluses are gradually again were general us or or gradual us here is that it looks like its improving sunday into early next week because of the natural features of turbulence occurring with new and maybe even some sprinkles enough to dirty the car and everything but at least were going to move that air a little bit more to help improve live shot from u c berkeley, the familiar fog, small book deal we cant really get a good shot of the east bay shoreline not yet but upstream a little agitator here this little trough, its not going to provide much in the way of rain are. Wed like to see more from it but its going provide that turbulence in the atmosphere that we need to help mix things out or at least going in that general direction they Area Temperatures now in the 50s over most of the region get the upper 50s east bay shoreline 55, San Francisco. Pretty much of a 40 story up north 62 for antioch 16 meanwhile for san jose. But as we watch this into motion for today, someone on a van full of course a lot that looks like its fairly clear. But of course the smoke stuff close to the ground by the time we get to late tonight tomorrow morning you see some of those sprinkles out to sea, its this turbulence now and biting the onshore Flow Movement that may start to help things out a little bit for us as we get into early next week again generally step by step here. Our forecast today calling for 71 coming in for San Francisco 77 for oakland, 81 san jose, hazy smoke drill that youre very familiar with again a slight improvement today, maybe better sunshine going on. Highs a projected upper 80s in the far east bay 80s up to the north bay to 71 San Francisco, 81. Meanwhile for san jose coming up a little bit here were going to take a little closer inspection of whats going on early next week with this agitation im talking about in a couple opportunities, maybe pick up a few showers will read it to heart that be great. Thank you dave. Well, todays game between the giants and padres is postponed after Major League Baseball announced that someone in the Giants Organization had tested positive. For covid19 last nights game was postponed as well. Its unclear who tested positive or if the giants will play tomorrow. A halfdozen mlb teams, including the as have had someone tests positive for covid19. Californias typical turnaround time for coronavirus testing has now dropped to less than 2 days. 2 thirds of the test results are now available within one day and nearly 90 within 2 days thats down from as many as 7 Business Days. Just last month state Health Officials say that at this speed they can be more effective and isolate and quarantine people who have been infected. The state public Health Department reported 3,000 new covid19 cases saturday and 100 and 11 more deaths, the numbers are 746,000 confirmed cases more than 14,000 people have died from the virus. Here in the bay area, the numbers have surpassed now 90,000 cases and more than 2 1200 deaths. A new cdc study found people who contracted coronavirus were twice as likely to have eaten out at a restaurant. The Restaurant Industry of course already suffering so much because of covid19. Well now bay area owners are hoping that strict cleaning and prevention methods will continue to attract enough customers to keep the doors open kron fours Ella Sogomonian has more on that. As the Restaurant Industry tries to make a comeback amid a pandemic a study by the cdc may serve a potential setback. The newly released report spotted a possible link to an increased risk of infection. 4 people dining out. It found adults who tested positive for covid19. We are twice as likely to have reported visiting either Restaurant Bar or coffee shop, both indoors and outdoors within 14 days of infection compared with those who tested negative Lorrie Thomas with the San Francisco Restaurant Association says there remains a question one thing that wasnt clear from that study is is it causation and correlation or there are other things involved is it just go to the. To the more willingness to assume risk as an individual but still regardless are big responsibility here is to protect the safety of our staff right first and foremost and to protect the safety of our customers and we know that an outside environment with a lot of maskwearing and im talking about seeded if youre not putting food in your mouth or a drink in your mouth having a mask on is super helpful with that. The cdc analysis cautions reports of exposures in restaurants have been linked to air circulation. Direction ventilation and intensity of airflow might affect virus transmission. Even if social distancing measures and masks are implemented, according to current guidance. Masks cannot be effectively worn while eating and drinking. Whereas shopping in numerous other indoor activities do not preclude mask use. Restaurants have been trying to lean on deliveries and pickup options but thomas says in may more than 60 strictly operating that way lost money. And another 29 were just breaking even and thats not a Sustainable Business model with no more federal aid coming in thomas said the San Francisco chamber of commerce looked at visa and master card data that showed more than 52 of local eateries didnt report any transactions which means theyre either temporarily or permanently closed. Well those kron fours Ella Sogomonian reporting now new york is set to be the first major us city to allow Indoor Dining. Thats scheduled for the end of the month city, San Francisco of course well be keeping a close eye. What happens in the big apple to collect more data and also learn what steps to take to ensure safety so that the Restaurant Industry has been decimated. Monday is going to be a big day for dozens of businesses in San Francisco as hair salons barber shops nail salons and gyms well be able to serve clients. Indoors hotels will also begin b
