statement detailing the additional reopening starting on monday september 14th allowing indoor personal services with limited capacity that includes hair and nail salons gyms and fitness centers. >>it remains to be seen what limited capacity but any capacity at this point is going to be a victory. >>dave character is a representative of the san francisco independent fitness studio coalition and co owns mx 3 fitness in the city which has been operating outdoors but challenging with unhealthy air quality due to wildfire smoke. but carriker says the coalition has been putting pressure on the city to reopen gyms the city's new announcement comes one day after our report that city employees like sfpd have been able to work out indoors since july defying health orders this just demonstrates this city can listen they can't hear that the cries coming from not just the small business owners they can hear the cries coming from residents of san francisco. >>who want this don't know that during a pandemic. >>can really help them out. >>barber shops this our services tattoo and piercing and hotels are also allowed to reopen indoors with capacity on monday live in san francisco gayle ong kron 4 news thank you gayle and as we take a live look right now that is the golden gate bridge the air quality believe it or not look a little better today or at least a little less orange it is still considered to be. >>unhealthy though for sensitive groups and this is the 24th straight day a spare the air alert has been in place here in the bay area. >>that's a record kron four's dan kerman reports now from san francisco. unlike wednesday, the skies were not a moody orange, but instead a grayish white visibility was limited. ash was all over cars and smoke made for another day of unhealthy air quality. >>it's so thick and it you feel it in your chest and. >>it's just gross is why i wear double mask got to them on because i said one mask doesn't really work for the smoke. so i'm hoping the 2 will work better in fact air quality was worsen thursday because a layer of fog that kept the smoke aloft wednesday. >>had dissipated we've lost or inversion protection and we're getting a lot more mixing enforcing that means that all that smoke that's been aloft is mixing down and it's affecting portions of the bay area where we're seeing some unhealthy for sensitive groups and even some red on healthy readings today. >>and while some people were still out and about it's definitely curtailing a number of activities. >>i won't be running jogging or in this weather and for some this unhealthy air coupled with the fires coupled with covid-19. >>this all become too much. >>i don't know i feel like i should start investing in the bunker in new zealand. i'm not sure i ever expect everything to be normal again on friday, the bay area air quality management district will decide whether or not to extend that spare the air alert. they say with all the smoke aloft, it's very likely. in san francisco dan kerman kron 4 news. >>in addition to san francisco where dan is reporting from the poor air quality extends all across the bay area and beyond your comfort chief meteorologist lawrence karnow tracking the conditions. bringing us some details things should be clearing up a little bit not overnight and then overnight tonight it's going to get worst winds calm down things settle in near the surface. and there you go we're looking at some very very poor air quality and healthy around a good part of the bay area and boy you see the smoke out there right now as we look toward sfo down below light you see the smoke out there nick lee we've actually got less smoke in the atmosphere today that's why it wasn't orange start to see some of the smoke in the higher levels begin to shift eastward. but down below some of the smoke makes him down to the surface and that's why the poor air quality out there right now also going on this is smoke, this is fog that is making its way in across the golden gate bridge we're seeing some dense fog. so that's kind of nice the only downside of that if you live near the coastline. you get some of the moisture from you get some of ash coming down to get that nice little ash cement forming on your car overnight. all right let's talk air quality and certainly bad in parts of the bay area right now very bad into san francisco all the way down into san mateo for the south near mountain view fremont hayward oakland you're all in that zone where some very poor air quality is settling in now also in the north bay up toward napa into fairfield and the air quality is bad just about everywhere you go around the bay area now even read this is a very bad air quality as well that continues, but things likely to shift a little bit tomorrow going to see a sea breeze and and but we're going to see incremental changes we've got so much smoke a built up in the atmosphere now it's just hard to move it out so by tomorrow afternoon still poor air quality but you're looking at the orange here that's not as bad as it's been i suspect you can see pockets of very poor quality, but the winds likely to continue maybe about 3 to about 10 maybe 12 miles per hour. that's really not enough to move out all the smoke would like to see some 20 mile an hour plus winds begin to move out some of the smoke around the bay are of course a nice rain storm certainly help. now all the smoke are really making its way down from fires outside of the bay area that coming down from their fire. the august complex that offshore wind carried all that smoke in our direction bringing that smoke all the way down the middle of civic 2 things of switch gears, though here's the good news. finally cutting off of the source of that smoke that is pushing now eastward all that smoke already in place, so it's going to take some time to move out the smoke in fact expecting that smoke to stick around right now, but you see the atmosphere there you go more of a westerly component of the wind that tends to drive that smoke out of the bay area so it will start to improve ever so slowly. but we need a significant win to do we're not getting that just yet but that pretty light 6 miles an hour in the san francisco. that's where we're seeing some of that dense fog comes to the golden gate bridge and very light winds even calm winds around the bay area is going to be a long night with some very dangerous smoke outside. all right lawrence wish the news was better, but alas take a look now at the major wildfires burning around the bay area tonight containment continues to increase that is good the lnu complex in the north bay. >>up to 95% containment nearly 1500 structures though have been destroyed their containment of the scu complex in the east and south bay's and beyond up to 98%. nearly a 140 structures there have been destroyed and the czu complex in san mateo and santa cruz counties up to 85% containment. more than 900 homes have been destroyed there and woodward fire in the point reyes national seashore in marin county is 95% contained as crews there work to mop up 0 structures destroyed in that fire. cal fire is now referring to the bear fire burning in butte county as the north complex west fire zone. the name change was made this morning. the fires have now killed 10 people that they know of 7 bodies were discovered today. >>after deputies found 3 yesterday. more than a dozen people are still missing tonight and the flames have destroyed about 2000 buildings, the north complex fires also burning up and plume us and yuba counties. it began on august 17th and it has burned more than 250,000 acres. many homes near the berry creek area were destroyed. >>there is still plenty to be worried about though still a lot of hazards that county officials all over the bay area want people to be aware of kron four's maureen kelly reports on the warning tonight from authorities in san mateo county. >>i'm in unincorporated san mateo county not far from the town of pescadero and behind me you can see how the czu lightning complex fires scorched. this ranch land behind me. it actually if you look over here you can see how it came right down to the roadway. i'm on cloverdale road and you can see that the fire basically stopped at this drainage ditch right here. now cal fire says they are at 84 percent containment. and they're basically in mop up mode but they do still stressed that they don't want people coming out here non-residents to the fire zone we have had issues with look you lose. >>people who want to stop and see what's going on which is obvious it's their community and they're very interested in what's happening so it's only understandable but when you do that sometimes you're not paying attention to where you're driving and we definitely we've got a good safety record right now and we definitely want to keep it that way not just with people who are working on cal fire incidents, but you know the other agencies as well they're working on the roads and they ask you to slow down just please do so so that everybody can go home safely and no everybody works to support that. they're also saying that there are still hazards out trees, especially in a wooded areas. >>that are in danger of falling and there is also something that they say could happen around the roots of the bigger trees. they call them ash pits and say that if you know people could fall into these ash pits because down below its where the fire is still burning. in the root system of these trees and they see those fires can sometimes burn for months, reporting from unincorporated san mateo county i'm maureen kelly kron 4 news. >>and we have the latest on the creek fire burning in fresno county that fire is now close to la. 176,000 acres charred it is 6% contained tonight. fire officials say that it has destroyed 361 structures. so far wildfires continue to ravage the state in california history, california's wildfire season is being fueled by years of drought and rising temperatures. experts say that's resulting in unpredictable fire behavior. they haven't seen before you know on average we're seeing our fire have become 75 days longer than they just several decades ago and so these longer periods of fire season allow for larger fires to burn and that's why we continue to hit the record books experts say climate change is fueling this new norm and the most concerning development is these fast-moving wildfires leave less time for warnings or evacuations, now guys under high pressure and so that's the problem we've got the smoke here now and looks like we cut off the really the source of the smoke for the most part except for some local fires. >>but we need a way to transport the smoke out the bay area right now we're not getting much help you're looking out toward a walnut creek and boy it is very hazy out there right now all around the bay area that smoke continues to settle in now it's a very poor air quality in fact it's going to bat again tomorrow. i think maybe with just some slight improvement as you will see a little bit of a breeze in the afternoon again, but poor all the way from the north bay, the coast. the east bay in the south bay of course another spare the air day around the bay area. well we're going get a little help from some of the marine air overnight tonight that is going to surge back on shore and into the bay so yeah, unfortunately for the folks of near the coastline you may get a little drizzle to in that mix with some of that ash you get that ash the man on your car as you wake up tomorrow morning but by the afternoon looks like that will start to mix out we've still got that he's already in place and that sea breeze is going to be fairly weak. so we're not expecting much in the way of improvement for air quality for tomorrow, i think we'll take toward the weekend. we start to see some improvement and then next week we've actually got a cold front that begins to bear down on the bay area right now doesn't look like it will bring us a chance of rain maybe a little drizzle, but i think it will ramp up the winds. they'll help the mix out there but we had to wait that long before you see that happen so with that in mind the temperatures off for tomorrow again going to be knocked down because smoke where that's going to be up above usually see these temperatures pop easily up in the 80's in these kind of conditions now for tomorrow that smoke just know really deflecting a lot of the sunlight 70's and some the warmest spots tomorrow the valleys inside the bail see 60's and a few 70's and toward the santa clara valley, but a z all day long even hazy along the coastline, the temperatures they're going to be the 60's and watch out some patchy dense fog late tonight, early tomorrow morning watching that come on shore right now something else to worry about outside so the next few days temperatures running below the average tomorrow i think we'll see the numbers rebound a little bit of the skies going clear out a little more on saturday and sunday the next week just partly cloudy skies. but i think some pretty good air quality may return to the bay area by next wednesday. that's when that cold front is a town up is a bit of the bay area. all right lawrence in the
