Grant lotus. And im Vicki Liviakis thanks for joining us for kron 4 news at 8 the highly unusual sight all across the bay area skies. Its just better. All people are talking about today indeed taking a live look outside right now across the bay from the bay bridge to the Golden Gate Bridge. The san mateo bridge to the richmond sandra fell bridge. It looks normal right now, but all day. It was just about as dark run for chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow begins our Team Coverage explaining. What weve been witnessing in how long the skies could stay like this lawrence whats going on yet let my entire life here in california have never seen a day like today wake up to the orange skies and certainly. Was concern looking at the maps though you can see where it came from not the more fires locally but number we have the paradise fire a few years back that but all the smoke in the bay area will now weve got another fire near theyre called the bear fire. Weve also got the august complex and that also brought that smoke back in the bay area but it was at such a thick level, but it actually of the colors that changed the atmosphere really kind of separating the specter of youve ever seen a rainbow youve got all those colors youve got the blue which is a shortwave radiation youve got some of the green thats also short violent short, then you start to get a long way radiation that some of the yellows the oranges and the reds, those are able to penetrate through that smoke lair and thats why youre able to get that orange colored sky out there and certainly an eerie look in the atmosphere and that continues out there this looking from the east bay hills this is berkeley hear this a combination of some of smoke out there as well some of the fog that is really kind of saved us from the worst of the air quality around the bay area the 2 boundaries between these dont mix very well so thats kept most of the smoke and the pollutants away from the bay area so here we go weve got a bit of a westerly wind right now thats what we want we want more of a sea breeze outside 8 Miles Per Hour in a San Francisco 7th in all 14 in a fairfield late today we saw a little bit of improvement in the atmosphere and you may have noticed a change in the color starting light now and so that dark orange start a should move toward a little shift toward the grey pattern in the atmosphere but heres what were looking at now the clouds gather along the coastline instead of that northeasterly wind that brought that smoke or away from the fires. Well now were starting to see a little more of a north northwesterly wind and that is going to carry some of that smoke away from the bay area so i think were looking at smoke conditions over the next couple of days that fog certainly helps out especially in the lower levels but things are going to change in the upper levels of the atmosphere to is were going to see High Pressure building in from the south the clockwise rotation around that should begin to transport some of that smoke a little further to the east and hopefully clear our skies in the coming days ahead guys. Lets hope so thank you lawrence in the north bay Doctors Today said they saw more patients coming in because of the smoky conditions. Kron fours terisa stasio is live tonight in marin county to continue our Team Coverage teresa how is it there. I grant well the its very odd age on all day long here moran county and at this hour you cant really see much but it does feel kind of well ever reached out to some medical experts here moraine county about whether what we are seeing is really as bad as how it feels or ever jus you know its not as bad as it is, but in short, they said it really is. Lee and cyber and told me that she felt a Burning Sensation and itchy throat from these smoky skies. Her dog not happy either she is coughing a little bit actually yeah, yeah so i dont i dont think its good for dogs either so we do have patients coming in with trying to suppress costing all of us take this doctor Joseph Bernardino is a respiratory care manager at moran Health Medical center thinking about everything thats being first great Building Materials vegetation. A lot of this can make anyone sick even at healthy person as well. Population 95. You can stand all that and say to a certain degree. But first the first 2 are your best options. And again, i also asked him about having that and 95 and then putting the gator on top of it and he said no go dont do that he said that its best again surgical masks and 95 events fitted properly and then is your worstcase scenario use the gator he said that actually the science just doesnt lend itself to using the gator to like protect yourself. Here marine county theresa back to you guys. Good information. Thank you theresa the ash in the air dark skies and poor air quality all affecting businesses in the east bay kron fours michelle kingston spoke to a few Business Owners in brentwood who say this is just another way that theyve had to stay flexible in order to stay open. Ashes falling from the sky like snow here in brentwood downtown is a very quiet but businesses are open and they want your support and i lived in california all my life i dont ever remember a Lightning Storm now just sure the businesses across the bay area taking hit after hit its heart. Yeah joining us now live from sfo kron fours noelle bellow and well youd almost expect more delays or cancellations with the sky. Looking the what did you find out. There are actually only a couple dozen delays here at sfo which like you said you would expect there to be much more of a crazy impact with the sky looking so thick and hazy however because San FranciscoInternational Airport is operating with just about 40 of the flights that they normally would have due to the pandemic there wasnt a domino effect alike there normally would be in conditions like this but delayed or not the people that i spoke with who landed here said that it felt like they stepped into another planet. If you like it landed on filled with disbelief, it was frightening. It was an absolutely frightening and concern in their eyes travelers from denver were in awe as they landed at San FranciscoInternational Airport wednesday afternoon and planes coming in and you see that. It looks like over cast. And then it gets this orange tint to it you go thats not quite right. And it gets deeper and deeper and then you see the ground through this orange. Even folks coming from Southern California were shocked at the difference in skys news to smog overlay and i see that all the time, but this definitely has a whole different feel to as disorienting as the smoky haze may be from the ground commercial Airline Pilot settler explained the conditions above are a lot like flying in fog this when we have low Visibility Conditions like smoke or is our instruments as guidance for navigation and stage situational awareness. The butler say their pilot made sure to warn them of what may happen midflight said would smell in the cabin, not worry, its the smoke from. 3 or 4 times so people freak out you know even still travelers say it was hard not to let their minds wander. We dont what more can happen in 2020. Like a science fiction. I expect to see aliens knocking on the window of the plane. No aliens whatsoever out here at least not that i saw for sure, but grant and vicki i will say ive been out at sfo several different over the last year and a half here and ive never seen the birds act the way they have tonight they just kind of been swarming around here at the International Terminal may ball kind of perched in it in a couple of the trees over here it almost feels like theyre confused as well because as night fell it was still extremely hazy and thick.
