Expand our Team Coverage here take a live look outside right now this is our camera that. Typically shows the golden gate bridge. But a lot of fog out there tonight and of course some smoke in the air to yeah, a red flag warning is being extended chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow here to explain why you know a lot of folks are wondering they live in the urban areas, they say. In my neighborhood weve got some very light when theres not much wind at all you can see even in petaluma right now just a light wind to 3 Miles Per Hour. Youre in a tin flail but really its up over the mountaintops where some of those wires from bg exist. Thats what read about and thats were seeing the gustier winds above a 1000 feet in fact some of these winds now gusting look at atlas peak, they jump up to about 38 mile an hour winds. So certainly a chance of 40 plus mile an hour winds overnight tonight. Its tomorrow morning its going to be blustery throughout the night then it looks like those winds will begin to calm down so thats why red flag warnings have been posted its been very dry of course coming after record heat in the santa cruz in the east bay, the oakland also in the diablo range so could see some gusts tonight of 30 the 45 Miles Per Hour county them pretty blustery all day long they continue to see some winds there overnight tonight, those winds will be picking up maybe 25 to 40 mile an hour gusts. And then the north bay 35 to 45 Miles Per Hour you get across some of those higher peaks. You can easily see a gust upwards of 50 Miles Per Hour. That is scary. Thank you. Alarming to us to have that many days in a row or snow impacting us. Charlie can owner and manages the Meteorology Department at the bay area air Quality Management district. He talked about the mix of record breaking temperatures over the Labor Day Weekend combining with lingering smoke from wildfires triggering the extended alert. As a result we have to call a spare the air alert for smog which is which is really a mixture usually its couples to come off of the tailpipe exhaust and that combined with he generates what we call ozone and we for research that of smaug the other thing we have going for us this past weekend is the massive amount of smoke thats been in the atmosphere over past several weeks and those emissions from wildfires to impact smog. So we also have to consider that Bay Area Health Officials Say during spare the air alert. It is important for residents to protect their health by avoiding exposure if possible stay inside with windows and doors closed until smoke levels subside this is the way we talk to one another these extended spare the air alerts are happening during the covid19 pandemic that is why ucsf Family Medicine doctor Katherine Forrest says if you just have to go outside in these conditions, the best protection would be. This type of mask. This n 95 masks will protect the person wearing it from incoming snow but themselves still lets your breath out with covid19 virus you can still infect someone else if youre talking breathing sneezing, so you need to wear your cost mask over that officials with the bay area air Quality Management district say the spare the air alert is now extended to wednesday september 1920 20. I first Maureen Kelly has the story. Right now one on one personal training is happening under the tent that protects the outdoor gym constructed at the fitness sf soma locations starting wednesday, this facility will be able to open up to members by appointment because thats what the city is allowing gyms and Fitness Centers to operate outdoors everything thats inside the gym has been taken outside with the exception tr nd. Super excited. I mean its been a long time working out at home going public in San Francisco, they have some were called off. Stations but the nothing this you know like the gym itself will those at fitness sf are happy helping people shed their pandemic pounds theyre frustrated that the city is still not allowing them to let their members work out indoors yet even though under the states guidelines. Well the poor air quality continues to plague us here in the bay area this is what it looked like a downtown San Francisco this morning. You can barely make out the buildings and this is what it looks like outside right now at the embarcadero. Yeah just got to erie gross out there for details on the air quality that people can expect around the bay in the coming days. We turn it over to our chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow lawrence i wish it was better, yeah were were all hoping to get a breath of fresh air right but unfortunately had that northerly component to win that offshore wind that brought some law smoke fires in far Northern California. Outside right now weve got a couple things going on of that patchy fog now bump up against part of the east bay hills above that youve got that smoke lair and certainly some very poor air quality around a good part of the bay area right now back. It is extremely unhealthy parts of bottle into a petaluma Napa Fairfield Lael Martinez and conquer por aquatic staying in orange here into Oakland Hayward and fremont a little more little bit better right along the immediate coastline. Thats where weve had a little bit of a westerly component to win. But today actually that smoke coming from some fires in the north the good news about the smoke it actually was so thick and knocked down our temperatures are temperatures coming way down as much as 30 degrees in some parts of the bay area today now that north northeasterly wind brought that smoke back in across our skies things begin to change though tomorrow by the afternoon i think the winds switch direction thats good news were going to see more of a southwesterly wind that is more of that flow right from the ocean that should begin to improve your air at least by tomorrow evening not going to make it perfect but it should be better. Thank you lawrence outside the bay area the 3 fires burning in Fresno County tonight. More than a 143,000 acres have been scorched so far this fire began on friday night and it said 0 containment.
