Of their own home as they were allowed to return late last night so theyre the First Community to do so the hope is to have areas like felton and the highway 90 corridor to have those areas open sooner than later those of the new places that they were targeting today, theyre throwing 2000 firefighters at this and it is working because the number of acres burned its not exploding, it is sitting right now at 82,540 acres and thats up only a 1000 acres from yesterday containment also up youre sitting now at 26 . Containment but firefighters still have their hands full, its basically a race between them and the fire to get to feel that has not been touched yet. Were going to have to start removing trees. The are unsafe. Weve got potentially take out additional power lines across roadways or in danger structures. So like i said its multiphase when we start pushing forward with the entire mitigation process of this incident and its going to take a while. I mean everyone to be patient. Were working diligently with both county youll seas. Although all caltrans and the county roads will be working with the private Timber Companies to identify and secure all those safety hazard out there. So obviously theres still a lot of work left to be done and thats why theyre not saying this community are that community as a guarantee because they dont want to provide false hope, but they are working towards several communities. Possibly today or even tomorrow in some communities are so devastated, theres nothing to return to. Let me tell you as far as the structures destroyed its now up to 799 structures that number more than likely will go up as investigators have now going into communities that no longer are seeing fire, but they can count homes that are left in homes that are destroyed. The number of structures threatened has gone down and thats great because yesterday they were sitting at around 24,000 structures. Right now theyre down to 13,330 structures threatened and again there hoping to have this marine layer burn off sooner than later and then descend the aircraft back up in the air to dump approximately 250,000 gallons of water on the fire. Fortunately, no injuries, no fatalities in the overnight hours and the missing persons case down to one as they found 3 people yesterday. Back to you. Thats all great news. Thank you will this will tran reporting for us from the south bay want to continue our Team Coverage on the lnu complex fire thats burning in the north bay. The map on your screen shows where the fires are burning in napa sonoma and solano counties this morning. Kron 4 Sarah Stinson is in Solano County taking a closer look at the damage there. Every day calfire gains just a little more containment on the l a new lightning complex and now that this area near vacaville is under control. We can get a better idea just how much destruction was caused. These charred hills in between Lake Berryessa and highway 80 tell a story about not only how fast these flames raged through here but where they travel to one Pleasant Valley road leaving homes, looking like this residents had only minutes to evacuate i literally got. Like 2 boxes of. Momentos in my my when file thats as Important Documents and Everything Else was lost or all of our memories of over a 1000 structures, including homes like this one have been destroyed all across the law known at the lake in sonoma countys this area and many others are still under a mandatory Evacuation Order. However officials have started letting families visit their properties to assess the damage. All the while cal fire has gained containment. Its now up to 35 but overnight its grown to more than 371,000 acres cal fire continues to put out hot spots. Holden and forced fire lines all to protect nearby communities. And 30,000 structures are still threatened by the fires burning this complex includes the hennessy fire in napa and solano counties which takes up about 84 of the total acres burned and theres the walbridge fire per merely burning in sonoma county. It has been deadly for people have been injured and 5 people have died. Throughout this complex. Cal fire continues to work on hot spots that reignite in the meantime until they get to 100 contained. Residents are in a Holding Pattern until they can rebuild their homes in vacaville Sarah Stinson kron 4 news. Well, some but not all evacuees in the north bay are being allowed back home now although the fire may be out in some areas, theres still plenty of hazards on the roadways as kron fours dan kerman explains. This is what it looks like driving along mill creek road. While the fire has come and gone along parts of this healdsburg neighborhood. The smell of smoke is thick homes have been destroyed and hazards are everywhere. Utility lines are down and huge trees that have been torched are falling or are ready to come down. There is still that big safety risk to the residents also crews alike. That could delay the repopulate shun of this area once the fire is out pacific gas and electric crews have moved damaged equipment off roadways. But repairs remain down the road crews have made assessments in that area, but its not safe. Quite yet for us to go in and start repairing equipment and restoring power in that specific area pg and e Vegetation Management inspectors are also on scene. To determine whether charge trees need to be pruned or removed the Vegetation Management inspectors are taking a look at the burn trees near or power lines and the states are just assessing and theyre marking the trees with fluorescent green kate up he won or keep to priority one priority too that based on the health of the tree and then that recruit will come in and remove the tree some hazardous trees have already been taken down and cut up. And by the looks of things a lot more might need to be done before its safe for residents to be back here. The course the residents they want to come back. Like we said before the the hazard and the life safety issue is still a concern here even though theres not the active fire that weve seen again firefighters have made significant progress with the yelling you fly over the last few days they expect that progress to continue in the days ahead. A base camp and santa rosa dan kerman kron 4 news. And of course one of the big reasons for that progress that theyre making on the fires is the weather and now to talk more about that is dave spahr heidi a good morning marty good morning, everybody and here it is checking in karl the fog covering up the towers at this Vantage Point the old started mix out over a good portion of the bay its still slow going and some of those problem areas, this is usually one of the last places the kind of clear out most of the readings for winds which we need to keep down or com to Single Digits as has been the case overnight as well. Now temperatures for us we have mostly 60s in the east bay 68 for antioch lower 60s as we head back west. If these up to the north bay and 61 meanwhile for san jose and the forecast today in the air quality is poor for much of the north bay lot of the fires going on there coast as good moderate for the east bay and again dollars south bay looking por as well today nothing is really going to change that looks like in terms of moving out of the the winds at all or are we moving at this air so kind of stuck with this for a little while here we dont we dont really need the winds though 87 at 1 oclock and 4 at 92 and the next thing thats going to start to happen is a little bit of drying this weekend and warming up as we head on into next week. Well have more on that forecast coming up in the party all right dave seen a couple minutes. In Alameda County course a big day for Business Owners in the east bay and kron fours reyna harvey. All the details. Hi rhonda good morning. Business owners they are saying at last we can finally opened our doors like the barbershop behind me and some other shops on the street is well but they have some concerns and not having to open up and provide Services Outdoors the first were going to show you who are walking open today, so we know barber shops hair salons as well as wine tasting but thats with appointment only also swimming pools waxing services skincare non medical massages and libraries can also offer Curbside Pickup now again this is another happy because they get a chance to provide for their employees that work there and can bring in some extra money but working outside presents its own set of challenges you can offer every service as well as being outside and all the elements we have several fires burning across the bay area so that contributes to the challenging air quality we have now i spoke to some residents out here also spoke to some Business Owners and here are what some locals have to say my. This is closed down and put it out and i was just really does wedding and just so sad about we really wishing that something did happen in whatever say for all they can do anything they can come out and do it i dont know how safe it is going to be but i just i hope that handled it up and get business because all i need is love them they just i love all the businesses here. Everybody there is the fog checking in the Golden Gate Bridge shot all covered up with karl, the fog at least at this hour. This is one of the last spots that tends to clear at any rate. Not much the way of winds were fairly calm. The Single Digits still hanging on lets get into this fog just a little bit yeah clears out today nicely. But tomorrow it doesnt get as much progress as it did today so that will help out in some of the firefighting efforts get those planes up in the one but took it out of the Santa Cruz Mountains as youll notice along the east bay shoreline to it doesnt extend this far south. Now what whats driving our weather pattern right now is a little bit of a break that high is still there in the southwest. This pays e fog conditions going on again tomorrow as i showed you, but this is waning and into the weekend temperatures bump up a little bit but then we spike it looks like early into next week. All right, heres whats going on the big picture. This is sfo. We have the well small going on basically fog and smog. Morning fog and clearing by the afternoon warm in mild okay by the weekend. Hes been coming out an amazing all of us with the roadways every time he comes out and plays because he knows the game of basketball. Hes tough. Lakers up the law could be a libyan know like the skys the limit by the bottom rung about people coming out and work in the network and if all of people like marcus voting or. The be good. Im Jason Dumas Kron 4 news but an inspiring story you go, thanks a lot. Jason. Well, still ahead on the kron 4 morning news resources of course stretched thin in the early days of the firefight so some People Living in the Santa Cruz Mountains stepped in to protect their homes themselves. We have their story coming up. And well take you outside for a live look at friday light on the approach the richmond sandra fell hardly any traffic at all well be right back. Good morning welcome back during the early days of the czu lightning complex fires in santa cruz and san mateo counties. A few residents ignored the Evacuation Order they did this to try and save their homes. Take a look at the cell phone video that shows been loma native kyler ruskin and his friends, pumping water to fight the flames in bonny doon raskin says that he and 7 ot,ers spent 5 days using whatever equipment they could find to help create a perimeter perimeter and also to douse the flames. Thank they were able to save his friends house and a lot more homes as well but still this week has been heartbreaking for them. Through the water pumped in and start battling that you think you have one house out you can look back to what got him. Same house the working on for hours up in flames in the arms around 20 minutes and you know again that all been prevented by. One single water tender truck in for extra owes as you the littlest things like that could have we could on such a long way we could have saved so many more homes. Well ruskin says some of his crew are actually off duty firefighters and that they were able to help supply water to some of the cal fire crews that were working in the area. The Santa Cruz County Sheriffs Office arrested a man who confessed to stealing a firefighters wallet and then draining his bank account. Santa cruz county sheriff say that Brian Johnson confessed to the trump and the crime. Johnson also wrote an apology to the firefighter. That firefighter received notes from all over the country with people who are offering to pay back what was stolen and his bank reverse the charges as well. Firefighters says he is grateful for all the kindness. And coming up after the break a black Business Owner in the north face as he was harassed and profiled by police. The incident was caught on camera weve got the video and the details when we come back. And after the break oakland mayor libby shaft joins us to talk about the recent protests in oakland as well as businesses in Alameda County been allowed to reopen today with Outdoor Services and well take a live look outside and foggy conditions that have remained this way all morning long well find out from dave how long thats going to last well be right back. Good morning, welcome back to the kron 00 04am morning news time to go ahead and get a check of the Weather Forecast specially as we head into the weekend days for has it all for us heidi a good morning. Im morning good morning everybody im like to say that were going to see a cooling trend or something along those lines but no its the other direction, the only thing is we talk about this warming spike coming our way thats been delayed is what its been thats the big issue into early next week not much the way of winds we would like it in one way to kind of clear this all out of here. However we really dont want to much the way of wind from any direction with the efforts for the fires going on this im not exactly sure what this is this i think this is my shot from u c berkeley, ok, so you can see its having some trouble mixing out from even this Vantage Point whether it is theres a icon there. So pwere waiting for this to mix out even from this Vantage Point the golden gate is looking like this as well too. Sfo shot is more kind of the smoggy kind of look at what we got speaking of that fog by the way heres how it mixes out for today pretty quickly get maybe another hour or so before it does that again around the golden gate will be kind of slow because its word as it heads out kind of a pathway for it. Tomorrow, not as aggressive as were seeing today and should clear out quicker thats kind of good news to let the firefighters get the helicopters up and planes up and all that sort of thing. Temperatures right now we have the 60s to the east bay 72 already antioch 50s up here the north bay, 61 for san jose theres the sfo shot in this is more kind of a pollution shot really going on of the smaug we have 87 by 1 oclock and 4 oclock at 92. A little bit warmer happening this weekend and then we watch for temperatures to spike early next week to cover that your extended coming up in a bit and that 4 zone forecast. Thanks a lot to start in the east bay this morning, several big stories happening in oakland this week. And that includes demonstrations over the shooting of jacob lake in wisconsin also some businesses will be allowed to reopen starting today and thats big news as well joining us to talk about those and other issues in oakland is oakland mayor libby shaft mayor good morning. Thanks a lot for joining us this morning want to start off with a talking about your response to the protests and the vandalism that occurred on wednesday night in oakland. To protest the shooting of jacob lake. Oakland police are blaming outside agitators for much of the vandalism is that your understanding as well. We made several arrests on wednesday and it is true that not one of those people was an oakland resident and lets be clear about what brought people to the streets i share the righteous rage over Police Brutality and Racial Injustice. But i urge people to channel that anger into activism not vandalism we will continue to not tolerate vandalism we made several arrests on wednesday we will continue to do that. And lets be clear about who suffered from that analysts and Affordable Housing development of our beloved lucas tap room where owner maria already prepares free meals for people who are homebound due to covid even the walgreens where so many of our seniors get their prescription medicine that is not okay, this is our beloved city we will continue to protected and again. Channel that righteous rage into activism we have an election coming up this november. Thats where people need to get involved. With kron 4 interviewed Law Enforcement to following the they essentially said that they were working with one hand tied behind their back because of a federal judge order prohibiting the use rubbercoated stinger grenades things like this whats your response to that. Lets be clear some of those have never been allowed in oakland for years not use rubber bullets but tear gas is a very nonlethal and safe way to control crowds where there is a threat to officer safety and to significant property damage. That is true that recent court action has limited that tool for Oakland Police it does limit our options but we are continuing to change up our tactics because we will not tolerate this type of vandalism were always going to work to hold people accountable and make arrests to people who are going to harm our city. In that same interview we found out there was also no call for mutual aid to whats your response to that decision. That court order has limited our ability to get mutual aid to respond to the city of oakland that is something that has been particularly disappointing about the court order but are police will continue to do their best to protect her persons and property and we again we will facilitate peaceful protest but then the is not free speech and we encourage people to channel that energy into other more productive demonstrations again hats off to the nba and to our oakland as for their demonstrations in support of Racial Justice and we have a big election in november just set fire to the courthouse where the ballots will be counted for this election that is where the registrar of voters is that is not productive we have got to make sure lets get into that courthouse, not that we destroy that courthouse. Lets turn the page and look at ahead to whats going to be a big day for a lot of Business Owners in oakland and Alameda County as health order is going to allow a lot of them to reopen outside. Yes, im so thrilled that many of our Small Businesses can safely reopen and hats off to city staff that you start flex Streets Program to make streets space or hair salons and nail salons barber shops or i can start actually operating outdoors today, lets take advantage of this beautiful weather and also tonight the last night of the chinatown night market please come out and support the Small Businesses wear your masks wash your hands, stay socially distant. But lets support these businesses that have been suffering so much during this pandemic will have to be overjoyed about the news today. But i think in the back of their mind they almost also must be wondering. Are we going to have to shut down again. Well that is part of how this Health Crisis works were constantly watching the medical information and the science were looking at those testing numbers, the hospitalization rate we have seen some improvement and so we are getting rewarded, but we have to be prepared that this roller coaster of a crisis is going to continue i know people are so tired and they really have been suffering through this. But your continued patience and compassion for everyone who needs just stay healthy and safe is truly appreciated. Mayor can you tell us a little bit more about this new county a program that is going to pay residents 1250 for those who have tested positive for covid but they cant work they have to be quarantined. Yes, this is a program from our county officials it is only for residents in the most impacted zip codes in oakland that is west for bail, san antonio and then parts of east oakland. You do have to be has stayed home from work not eligible for unemployment benefits, but this cash is too. Help you be able to afford to stay home get better and not spread coronavirus wheres the money coming from. Its coming from different sources most of it is cares act funding the county allocated 10 Million Dollars to help people shelter at home just huge appreciation to our county board of supervisors. Lets turn our attention now to the Oakland School district because schools been going on for the past couple of weeks can you give us an update on the Laptop Program for its students in the Oakland Unified School district. I mean its called oakland and divided in oakland has come together around making sure that we close that Digital Divide for good and that we ensure all of our children can engage in Distance Learning which is the only way that they are getting their education right now i got to be there as we pass out the first of our 25,000 laptops chromebooks that have come to oakland, we also are providing hot spots, you know Internet Connections as well as Technical Support through tech exchange, a fantastic nonprofit here in oakland. So just does the kids just light up the parents excited about having technology in their homes. This is how oakland comes together and demonstrates that we are and divided when it comes to supporting our kids and our schools. And in friday city council vote, the city Council Voted to purchase a dorm building enough for homeless families tell us more about that. Yeah that vote is about to happen. Its a special meeting that has been called to approve the purchase of what was a dormitory for the California College of arts right in rockbridge were hoping to convert that into a family homeless shelter as well as 2 floors of permanently Affordable Housing for formerly homeless seniors, the council will also be approving purchases and funding for the conversions of 2 other hotels as well as 17 singlefamily homes all possible because of governor Gavin Newsome project home key all these projects have applied for state funds to make them possible all told it would be around 250 units of permanently Affordable Housing for formerly homeless, its a beautiful beautiful program. When you plan to have that open. We have to actually have everything closed off and purchased by the end of this year, some of the short turnaround thats why its so exciting to repurpose existing building to takes too long to build mid new whats so this is a great way to use this empty dorm and underutilized to really provide much needed shelter for homeless, we hope to get people into them as early as the beginning of the new year. And whats been the response from people who live in the rock ridge area. There was a Big Community meeting earlier in the week and everyone was supportive people recognize that we have got to show compassion for our homeless that these are great ways to get people off the streets and to put a roof over their heads particularly our elders were seen unprecedented numbers of firsttime homeless that our seniors and just beautiful support from the rock ridge neighborhood, im very proud of the compassion in this city. Merely be chef thanks a lot for spending a little bit of in your busy morning and be well have a good weeke good morning welcome back in the north bay, the city of timber on held a town meeting to talk about a tense confrontation. That took place over the weekend between police and the only black stowers store owner in town. Take a listen. It closes that his regular Business Hours is your 4 zone who you want to know why ok its my school ok ok did you identify different myself 20 by myself. Well it all began late last friday night as the owners of yemen say Police Parked out in front of their Clothing Store in downtown tehran. Eventually came to the front door and they questioned the owner yum uc aleve about what he was doing inside after hours. Cleave says he explained he owned the store police then demanded that he proven cleave says the officers were argumentative from the start. I just think that you know things can be better and they should be better. And as a Business Owner, i shouldnt have to feel that i have to. To my several who am every single time he gets a little bit frustrating. Its frustrating. Well that confrontation continued until a white neighbors shouted at police that khalifa did own the store. Thats when the officers left the store owner says that while they have received a lot of support from customers. Theyve yet to receive an apology from police and the peaceful protests planned for this saturday at noon day 4. Ok marty take a look at the high temperatures projected for today, weve got some middle 90s there in the far east bay going on a gradual warming this weekend but were going to be spiking as we head into early next week. As well as gop leaders on capitol hill for years ago President Trump promised to be your voice you kept that promise real life, my friend, President Donald Trump but thursday belongs to the president there is violence and danger in the streets of many democrat run cities throughout america. This problem could easily be fixed if they want to do and no shortage of attacks on his november opponent, Joe Biden Joe biden is not a savior. Of americas soul. He is the destroyer of americas jobs and if given the chance he will be the destroyer of american greatness the president making this plea we will make America Greater than ever before. Im very very proud. A to b. The nominee. Of the republican party. I love you and god bless you and god bless him. The resounding theme of the president s speech is that if joe biden is elected. The American Dream will end from the white house, im nadia romero. All right as we turn the page from a friday into the weekend want to get a check of the Weather Forecast you can see behind me there the embarcadero all fogged in dave lot of smoke makes in there as yes like our own kind of smaug going on the awning area except thats being generated more by wildfires. Yeah and this is what we have an sfo see the kind of the small kind of you as well there you see some of that ugly color is a shunned there too as well. Now this is going to be in the process of mixing out at least we can take care of the smoke part, but at least the fog part will be lets get to that moisture part more at the surface obviously we dry out during the day with daytime, heating and mixes with drier air aloft. A relative humidity levels are in the 40s some 30s to be had the recovery overnight and tomorrow afternoon much the same 30s and 40s but as we get into early next week. Temperatures are going to rise and the air will get a little drier to story be looking at these numbers this will be something have to watch more carefully as we get those numbers a little bit lower 72. Antioch most rings in the east theyre still in the 60s, you know again this kind of overcast fog is kind of slowing things down 50s up to the north bay and we have 50s for the peninsula, 61 san jose. Watching this high by the way build there we see kind of carving out its own territory and a little system comes in from the northwest, but towards our north dakota. Do us any good. Unfortunately were doesnt look at what has some offshore wind problems here but that high is going to generate some warming for us and early next week 100 going on for president today 99 for bakersfield 66 San Francisco in speaking of which your 4 zone forecast for your t g i f again 66 for San Francisco, mid 60s cover the coast on the bay side 70s and play 78 for burlingame get some 80s as we head down south 81 redwood city 84 for palo alto mideighties speaking of which for much of the santa clara valley, 85 milpitas 91 morgan hill with a pair of aids for los gatos on the east bay shoreline to the south lower 80s but tri valley over the east bay hills lower 90s 88 going on for dublin 89 for walnut creek 94 danville 91 for concord and Solano County still managing some 90s today, 79 for vallejo 79 also for napa and sonoma 88 with santa rosa 86 mideighties heading down south and heading into your longerrange forecast for this weekend. Just a little bit slightly upward with temperatures and then we get into early next week and away we go we have potential to pop in around 100 or so for some of those in the valleys on tuesday may take it to wednesday thursday to break it for those inland areas marty who ok thank you dave. Turning to National News this morning we are getting a closer look at the devastation left behind by hurricane laura, at least 6 people were killed in louisiana after laura made landfill. Now its been downgraded to a tropical depression as its making its way into arkansas. Darryl forges reports from louisiana and he takes a look at the damage. Downed power lines downed trees thats what were seeing here lake charles louisiana, look at the damage right here to this Golden Corral restaurant part of it is just on recognizable this just shows you the true power of hurricane laura in those category 4 winds. And looked after 2 you summoned to the bathroom when snapping trees and spawning tornado watches. Laura is now making its way through arkansas, although no longer hurricane still causing destruction. There was no warning for this one and the next thing when you got a phone call so much churches destroyed at least one tornado was reported thursday night laura made landfall in louisiana early thursday morning as a category 4 hurricane. Residents spent the day surveying the damage as soon as the coast was clear from taking pictures of a neighborhood now to let everybody know about the propertys lauras ferocious winds ripped roofs off houses. Tossed cars around and turned some buildings into matchsticks was and how it was more like a screen that could actually hear the shame was being ripped the house while coastal regions were mostly spared. The predicted unsurvivable storm surge those who evacuated are happy they chose to get out if anybody tried to ride the storm out i think they were its like and same be crazy to ride out a storm.
