Probably a good thing here in the winds we are getting a bit on shore which is kind of been the program for a little while well see that heading on into the weekend. As well live shot coming in from timber on there you can see the fog still pretty much firmly in place but its starting to lift elsewhere across the bay. Temperatures are still in the 50s up here the north bay east bay, youre looking at approaching middle 60s, 58 cool degrees for san jose and for comparison, were a little bit warmer in the east bay this morning. Cooler in the north bay. The breakdown for you look at that shot there of the sfo the smoggy look 83 gogos on by high noon at 3 oclock were talking 92 marty. All right dave thanks a lot to start in the east bay this morning, several big stories happening in oakland this week. And that includes demonstrations over the shooting of jacob lake in wisconsin also some businesses will be allowed to reopen starting today and thats big news as well joining us to talk about those and other issues in oakland is oakland mayor libby shaft mayor good morning. Thanks a lot for joining us this morning want to start off with a talking about your response to the protests and the vandalism that occurred on wednesday night in oakland to protest the shooting of jacob lake. Oakland police are blaming outside agitators for much of the vandalism is that your understanding as well. We made several arrests on wednesday and it is true that not one of those people was an oakland resident and lets be clear about what brought people to the streets i share the righteous rage over Police Brutality and racial injustice. But i urge people to channel that anger into activism not vandalism we will continue to not tolerate vandalism we made several arrests on wednesday we will continue to do that. And lets be clear about who suffered from that analysts and Affordable Housing development of our beloved lucas tap room where owner maria already prepares free meals for people who are homebound due to covid even the walgreens where so many of our seniors get their prescription medicine that is not okay, this is our beloved city we will continue to protected and again. Channel that righteous rage into activism we have an election coming up this november. Thats where people need to get involved. With kron 4 interviewed Law Enforcement to following the they essentially said that they were working with one hand tied behind their back because of a federal judge order prohibiting the use rubbercoated stinger grenades things like this whats your response to that. Lets be clear some of those have never been allowed in oakland for years not use rubber bullets but tear gas is a very nonlethal and safe way to control crowds where there is a threat to officer safety and to significant property damage. That is true that recent court action has limited that tool for Oakland Police it does limit our options but we are continuing to change up our tactics because we will not tolerate this type of vandalism were always going to work to hold people accountable and make arrests to people who are going to harm our city. In that same interview we found out there was also no call for mutual aid to whats your response to that decision. That court order has limited our ability to get mutual aid to respond to the city of oakland that is something that has been particularly disappointing about the court order but are police will continue to do their best to protect her persons and property and we again we will facilitate peaceful protest but then the is not free speech and we encourage people to channel that energy into other more productive demonstrations again hats off to the nba and to our oakland as for their demonstrations in support of Racial Justice and we have a big election in november just set fire to the courthouse where the ballots will be counted for this election that is where the registrar of voters is that is not productive we have got to make sure lets get into that courthouse, not that we destroy that courthouse. Lets turn the page and look at ahead to whats going to be a big day for a lot of Business Owners in oakland and Alameda County as health order is going to allow a lot of them to reopen outside. Yes, im so thrilled that many of our Small Businesses can safely reopen and hats off to city staff that you start flex Streets Program to make streets space or hair salons and nail salons barber shops or i can start actually operating outdoors today, lets take advantage of this beautiful weather and also tonight the last night of the chinatown night market please come out and support the Small Businesses wear your masks wash your hands, stay socially distant. But lets support these businesses that have been suffering so much during this pandemic will have to be overjoyed about the news today. But i think in the back of their mind they almost also must be wondering. Are we going to have to shut down again. Well that is part of how this Health Crisis works were constantly watching the medical information and the science were looking at those testing numbers, the hospitalization rate we have seen some improvement and so we are getting rewarded, but we have to be prepared that this roller coaster of a crisis is going to continue i know people are so tired and they really have been suffering through this. But your continued patience and compassion for everyone who needs just stay healthy and safe is truly appreciated. Mayor can you tell us a little bit more about this new county a program that is going to pay residents 1250 for those who have tested positive for covid but they cant work they have to be quarantined. Yes, this is a program from our county officials it is only for residents in the most impacted zip codes in oakland that is west for bail, san antonio and then parts of east oakland. You do have to be has stayed home from work not eligible for unemployment benefits, but this cash is too. Help you be able to afford to stay home get better and not spread coronavirus wheres the money coming from. Its coming from different sources most of it is cares act funding the county allocated 10 Million Dollars to help people shelter at home just huge appreciation to our county board of supervisors. Lets turn our attention now to the Oakland School district because schools been going on for the past couple of weeks can you give us an update on the Laptop Program for its students in the Oakland Unified School district. I mean its called oakland and divided in oakland has come together around making sure that we close that Digital Divide for good and that we ensure all of our children can engage in Distance Learning which is the only way that they are getting their education right now i got to be there as we pass out the first of our 25,000 laptops chromebooks that have come to oakland, we also are providing hot spots, you know Internet Connections as well as Technical Support through tech exchange, a fantastic nonprofit here in oakland. So just does the kids just light up the parents excited about having technology in their homes. This is how oakland comes together and demonstrates that we are and divided when it comes to supporting our kids and our schools. And in friday city council vote, the city Council Voted to purchase a dorm for homeless families tell us more about that. Yeah that vote is about to happen. Its a special meeting that has been called to approve the purchase of what was a dormitory for the California College of arts right in rockbridge were hoping to convert that into a family homeless shelter as well as 2 floors of permanently Affordable Housing for formerly homeless seniors, the council will also be approving purchases and funding for the conversions of 2 other hotels as well as 17 singlefamily homes all possible because of governor Gavin Newsome project home key all these projects have applied for state funds to make them possible all told it would be around 250 units of permanently Affordable Housing for formerly homeless, its a beautiful beautiful program. When you plan to have that open. We have to actually have everything closed off and purchased by the end of this year, some of the short turnaround thats why its so exciting to repurpose existing building to takes too long to build mid new whats so this is a great way to use this empty dorm and underutilized to really provide much needed shelter for homeless, we hope to get people into them as early as the beginning of the new year. And whats been the response from people who live in the rock ridge area. There was a Big Community meeting earlier in the week and everyone was supportive people recognize that we have got to show compassion for our homeless that these are great ways to get people off the streets and to put a roof over their heads particularly our elders were seen unprecedented numbers of firsttime homeless that our seniors and just beautiful support from the rock ridge neighborhood, im very proud of the compassion in this city. Mayor libby shaft thanks a lot for spending a little bit of in your busy morning and be well have a good welcome back everyone its another spare the air day, lets check in with meteorologist dave spahr and see just how this weather shaping up day a good morning robin good morning, everybody im live shot coming in from the golden gate bridge. You guys were talking about earlier too cannot see that hours and quite a bit of fog going on here, but its kind of rearranging itself because the start to clear in other areas of the bay not much in the way of winds going on were basically Single Digits to calm which is good we like that keep the winds down a bit. Lets watch the fog situation here clears up nicely later on this morning. And tomorrow morning doesnt do is much doesnt get quite the kind of progress we looked at today and mixes out a little faster. So hope says maybe down the Santa Cruz Mountains it wont cover up as much as were looking at this morning. So the Major Players going on here is weve got a high off towards our east it will play in late herb or getting a break now lower backyard years providing the fog keeping the temperatures somewhat reduced compare what comes our way early into next week. So we got the morning fog and some clearing. Somewhat will start to do with the smoke as you can see from the shot from sfo and warm to mile depending on your perspective, youre certainly mild. For the beaches in the coast in and around the bay but getting a little warm inland this weekend. We bump that up just slightly and we start to dry out a little bit too and that will be the big issue is we get into early next week with temperatures approaching near about 100 and some of those far east bay reaches for San Francisco today 66 were looking at 73 for oakland, 84 san jose, but well see some 90s and the board today pick in the far east bay, a little bit up the Solano County but most of the north bay will be kind of a mixture of 80s with some 70s, some lower 80s on the east bay shoreline and 84 for san jose coming up in a bit of course what your 4 zone forecast and check into that extended as well marty. Ill take it from here day we have a hot spot to check in on and thats in the east bay, richmond eastbound 5. 80 after maria bay parkway just getting word of an overturned crash looks like the driver of a truck spun out and actually flipped over on its side. Emergency crews responding they have the 2 left lanes closed once again this is eastbound 5. 80 at marina bay parkway in richmond, a Traffic Alert just issued for this overturned crashes quickly backing up behind the scene but eastbound the counter commute direction, so no major delays getting through the westbound side the commute side. Its actually doing fine with no reports of any major delays here heading to the richmond sandra fell bridge. Heres a live look the backup that we have what 20 minutes ago, its gone so a great trip here into the north bay once again youre overturn is eastbound opposite direction. A quick peek at 92 in has also thinned out nicely a little crowded leaving hayward but no big problems only 12 minutes to make your way to the peninsula. Marty. All right robin lets go ahead and give you an update on the wildfires that are burning in the bay area will start with a closer look at the czu lightning complex fire in san mateo and santa cruz counties. The map on your screen shows the areas that have burned in kron fours will tran live at the Cal Fire Base Camp ensconced valley, he has the latest on the firefight and well were hearing some good news. Great news actually be live in Scotts Valley youre probably watching us this morning right from the comfort of your own home as they allow people is Scotts Valley to return late last night. You talked about base camp marty look over my right shoulder look at how busy it is right now theyre throwing. 2000 firefighters at this and they gave a News Conference a little bit earlier this morning. The containment number did go up slightly its 26 containment up from 24 containment. More importantly the acreage did not explode we are now sitting at 82,540 acres and thats only up about a 1000 acres in 24 hour span. So its not exponentially jumping all over the place as they are establishing controlled burns lines trying to get fuel away from the fire. So it does not have a lot to burn as far as the structures destroyed 799 structures. Something very a chilling that they said at the News Conference mardy in robin it seems that we are up to our eyeballs in fire right. I mean its happening all over california. 14,000 firefighters being thrown at the wildfires throughout our state. Keep in mind. Were not even into peak fire season just yet. Remind everybody. That were just moving into our peak fire season here in san mateo santa cruz. And we have an 82,000 acre fire that were going to continue with through that for those that have not done your Defensible Space. Its not too late to start you see because were doing it so you dont spark a new fire. So if you can get out there protect your homes and start toward said that Defensible Space. Isnt that crazy i thought we were already me deep into fire season. No were not even scratching the surface just yet. So reminder Defensible Space as far as the other communities that possibly could be repopulated allowed to return theyre not giving anybody fall so, but i pressed them and press them and they said they are looking for certain communities and felton and along the highway 90 corridor so that could be next, but they say stay on top of the news. Stay on top of cal fires website will let you know and said awaiting around the checkpoints and only to be disappointed and to cause traffic jams for First Responders coming and going as far as the situation right now you can see a lot of fog over us and i can tell you they hope that the fog burns really quickly so they can get the aircraft back up in the air to dump thousands of gallons of water. On this fire that continues to burn in mardy come sunday. It will be 2 full weeks for this fire. Its hard to believe all right well, thanks a lot that live report from the south bay robin. Well to Sonoma County now not everyone is allowed back home there are still plenty of hazards out there on the roadways. This is what it looks like just riding along mill creek road near hills for check this out homes have been destroyed and hazards are just everywhere. Utility lines are down and burned trees to fall in or are ready to come down. Pg e crews have moved damaged equipment off the roadways and inspectors are checking out those charge trees. Pre inspectors are basically looking at the spire damage trees that are adjacent to pg e facilities to determine if they need to be removed. Or trim theres a lot of damage to this area. There was structures are impact in this area and a lot of the infrastructure was destroyed in this area. Well some hazardous trees have already been taken down and cut up, but a lot more will need to be done before its safe to allow residents to return home. And several businesses here in Alameda County are going to be able to open up their doors today. We have a list of well happening today, more businesses will be allowed to reopen in the east bay hair salons barber shops and Wine Tastings are allowed to resume outdoors in Alameda County. It is a big day for Business Owners in these ban kron fours reyna harvey live in alameda this morning with all the details high rain.
