The Contra Costa County board of supervisors approved the hiring of 24 new sheriffs deputies to specifically help Mental Health professionals, give proper care to inmates who need special attention in their jail. A recent report claimed the one 0. 75 Million Dollars needed to cover the salaries would come from federal funding known as the cares act which was meant for coronavirus 8 supervisor john guy what who voted against the new hires agrees Mental Health support is vital for inmates but believes that existing resources should be used for that supervisor Candice Anderson who approved the new hires explains the incoming deputies salaries will actually becoming from money saved as a result of the general fund. The savings from the cares act and paid deputies who are going to be reimbursed because we are helping them do different jobs and they were doing in the jail previously covid related jobs that savings we can then transfer and utilize for these new positions that we need to have in the jail to really enhance the Mental Health services voted against expenditure because i believe we could located sheriffs deputies from another facility rather create new positions. But ultimately its the boards decision and they will revisit the issue again in september in the meantime both agree the county should continue to invest more into Community Support services that help people with Mental Health issues to avoid them from landing in jail in the first place.
