Officials say President Trump plans to get back on the campaign trail in the next 2 weeks the announcement comes as he is sliding in the polls amid nationwide protests against racism and Police Brutality the president is also facing pressure by some to address the nation Kaitlan Collins reports following 2 days of nationwide protests. President trump met with Law Enforcement some aides are considering whether he should address the nation again i believe youre going to be hearing from the president this on this topic in some detail. Trump is still facing criticism for his last statement on the protest and a new survey finds it may be hurting his standing with voters, the president s Approval Rating slipped 7 points in the last month, according to a new cnn poll. And 63 of adults disapprove of how hes handled Race Relations in the country. 65 say his response to the protests has done more harm than good the president once said all negative polls are fake news and today he dismissed the new numbers by claiming cnn polls are as fake is there reporting that the new polls show that americans now believe that Race Relations is as big of a Campaign Issue as health care and the economy in turn Trumps Campaign is focusing on activists who have advocated for defunding Police Department while trump portrays himself as the law and order candidate moments after the Trump Campaign said biden was endorsing defunding the police by staying silent. Bidens Campaign Said he does not believe the police should be defunded this comes as several of the president s top cabinet officials have said they do not believe there is systemic racism in Law Enforcement is racism in the United States still, but i dont think that Law Enforcement system is just an ugly racist. I do not think that we have a systemic racism problem with Law Enforcement officers across this country that kind of thing is very uncommon now. Today, the white house wouldnt say if the president believes theyre systemic racism in Law Enforcement he believes most of our Police Officers are good hardworking people and theres a lot of evidence of that and he has great faith in our Police Department as he faces criticism for his own handling of the unrest across the country. The on to utah senator mitt romney for marching with black lives matters violence. And make sure that people lives matter trump tweeted tremendous sincerity what a guy beside his tweets the president has kept a low profile in recent days and has declined to engage with the press at length in over a week ignoring reporters questions during his last appearance on friday. Today marks 2 weeks now since the death of george floyd nationwide protests continue as elected officials point to police unions. That they are critical to getting some reform and Police Departments, President Trump held a roundtable meeting in washington today with members of Law Enforcement we welcome now the former u. S. Attorney for the Northern District of california joseph druce anello joseph thank you for being with when you see over the course of just a couple of years case after case of after case of. Black men unarmed being killed minor do you think that Law Enforcement is systemically racist. No i dont i and you have to remember that from my perspective ive been in Law Enforcement for over 50 years beginning as an fbi agent moment late 60s assigned to the south. I mean that we were still fighting a an active ku klux klan in mississippi. And White Citizens Councils and so on they were Police Departments in the country in washington dc to take notorious being racist. I think weve come a very very long way since then obviously i think theres been a significant increase improvement in the professionalization of Police Departments. A great deal more accountability, better effective that recruitment of a good for sons for police work. Its not perfect believe me there there always are going to be an institution in which you have 900,000 members. There are going to oddballs are going to are the jobs are going to be people who shouldnt be there. And i think we need to now as we have in the past need to attend to those people we need to find out who they are we need to remove comey need better systems in place in order to identify them early but i think in terms of the specific question which is is this a systemic racism specifically among Police Departments in the United States. I would say categorically no there is. So joe how do you handle this issue too make people feel at ease or at least make them feel better that this issue is being addressed because we hear these stories about officers who are fired or are able to resign from departments because of their bad behavior that just get hired by another department is at one example of something that could be fixed. Well i have to be the next time you know this is weve had this in the church peta feel you and number of priests or reassigned to different parishes parishes and the bias use after they were found out. As miss grandson, one particular area. As i said i think there needs to be a better system in place in order to ensure that the and actors are weeded out and that theyre not given the chance to sort of resuscitate themselves a Memory Service someplace else. Thats fairly easy to do. I think the more difficult thing to do is with in the structure of an individual Police Departments have mechanisms in place to ensure that were taking the right approach to weeding out bad actors identifying those complaints that are made that that are sound or says those that are just. Ill directed that Police Officers are always being accused by criminals misconduct and a lot of that stuff goes into the file is broad data and as you know because quite frankly it isnt the isnt verify. So there needs to be a a system in place to make sure that theres a scrutiny. And affected the valuation of the material was going into into those files and action taken but appropriate. Remember in this case in minneapolis. The in the main perpetrator, the person charged with primarily committing the murder was Training Officer for 2 of the others. Its hard to expect the other 2 would have done anything to blow the whistle or to or to try to prevent him. From a from from doing anything the second officer that was more senior probably as more responsibility for taking action there than a minute mr. Ripleys based on what the public knows right now about the case in minneapolis said and you as a prosecutor talk about the difficulty in prosecuting officers and do you think. The prosecution and conviction is likely in minneapolis. Well its not impossible. We remember a i think emeka kosher to go present senator from the minneapolis. And has been selfcongratulatory that she is one of the few people who was able to actually get a conviction in these cases as a state prosecutor. The levels that are in place for example with the local d a as the primary responsibilities prosecute. Maybe some question about that persons ability to be impartial given that his office works in her office words what a regular basis with police and so the let be a system where and state attorney general takes over the prosecution. May make a lot of sense. The federal authority is a is a backup. A federal that looks at the case from the standpoint of civil Rights Violations different from the substantive charges of murder manslaughter. Whatever. Its all a question of gathering evidence these cases havent been made in the best i can point to any one particular now the top of my head, which i said it was a grave injustice with his federal government didnt step in and right the wrong even even the rodney king case where where a local jury may have been biased in favor of police of this believing that a person could have been beat up to the extent that he was that the federal government came in took over that case much different jury panel and was able to bring some justice and joe iser speed of jumping never about out of time i want to ask you one last question before we before we go youre appointed the u. S. Attorney for Northern California which covers set 15 counties from moderate to the oregon border, including the bay area. Your first appointed by i believe president reagan and then president George W Bush he served a second time in the bay area based in San Francisco. I do think that william barr is doing u. S. Attorney general. I like it i like what hes doing i think that the hes a breath of fresh air for quite frankly. I did almost 2 and a half years under. In the obama administrations us attorneys and know that just got some things happening that were were i thought in the going in the wrong direction. Not specifically in the civil rights area, but just in terms of the focus of our i think bars a very sober and the serious person and very experienced and the then attorney general before. So it is a tough it. I mean this is a no ones been confronted with the kinds of challenges that they have but i think teyre holding up pretty well as they say the proof of the pudding is in the eating well have to wait until you see at the end of the term how history judges how affected they work. Former u. S. Attorney joe personnel, thank you for your time. The Surveillance Video shows the suspect crouched behind a parked car in front of the redwood coast dispensary off highway 9 in ben lawman saturday afternoon employee Mark Kowalski says at the time he was aware a deputy had been shot and that a gunman was on the loose when he and his boss came out to investigate a commotion outside as soon as he got to the parking lot. He found himself face to face with the armed man weve got a look each other up and down i noticed he was holding a you know an assault rifle. And for a moment, i think i hope to use an offduty Police Officer because use i a 30 year scruffy like someone had just been in the shootout as we look at each other i just was co uk was going on. And he said and i were your karma and i really got to get out of here. And i was still hoping that he was going to flip out of that and say im a Police Officer. He said im not a bad guy, im just sick of all this duality bulls s. Said realize ok. Kowalski says he was able to back away when the suspect looked in another direction and then jogged across the parking lot jumped in a car or young lady was i heard her screaming jumped out. It was after that that the man left the parking lot. Another witness says he then attempted to carjack another local man who tackled the suspect not long after that the suspect was arrested and later identified as ben lomond resident, Stephen Kowalski learned after his runin with the suspect that a santa cruz sheriffs deputy was killed in the ambush this guy to know how to direct his anger. A good guy is a crime. That pot shop worker says that the suspect never pointed his firearm at him at any time during their encounter. But he is still rattled by the experience. Some protesters want to disband Police Departments all together however as kron fours Haaziq Madyun tells us and east bay city is considering a 3rd option. I love this is Oakland Police can i help you. A different model of policing that involve civilians responding to specific 911 calls is currently under consideration to the city of oakland one of the calls that dispatch gets regularly is that a parent will call and say my child wont get up and go to school.
