What does the weather look like in sunnyvale . With a lot of rain, there is always a concern the San Anselmo Creek could flood over its banks. So marin county officials are moving ahead with a plan. Meant to reduce the risk. But as kron4s Maureen Kelly reports, the project involves tearing down a building that is home to four local businesses. Pkgheres what it looked like back in 2005. When many businesses were inundated with floodwater when the creek jumped its banks. But the plan to reduce the risk of that happening again. Involves the demolition of a building thats home to four businesses. Thats because whats known as building bridge 2. Straddles the creek. The city and county says its also is the reason behind the major floods in this town. Because of the way it was build back in the 50s. Actually its a bottleneck imagine you take an orifice like a circle and you restrict it the size of it then the waters going to back up and out because of that building the water backs up and out and jumps over onto Bridge Street and then comes down san antonio ave. And also to the park areacounty officials have purchased the building and are moving ahead with the plan they say will improve the areas natural habitat and thats the hope that we can bring the creek and the park more into downtown make more of a space for people to use the owner of the restaurant thats being forced to move says he knew it was coming but it hasnt been easythats what happens when you dont have the choice we didnt make a decision, they made it for us. Starting tomorrow. In the east bay public works crews are hard at work. Clearing debris from storm drains. Theyre working to allieviate a major cause of flooding during storms here in the bay area. This public works crew is clearing storm drains in concord, acting fast to prevent neighborhoods like this from flooding during the storm. An average day when we are vacuuming 20 to 30 storm drains per day clearing basinsconcord public works is also supplying residents with flood prevention do ityourself tools at several sandbagging stations. Including at their facility on gasoline alley. This storm is already shaping up to be a powerful one. And residents are heeding the warnings and getting prepared. The incident happened in antioch near lone tree way and indian hill drive. The Coroners Office confirmed, 17 year leana rubin died in the crash. 13 year old Jaia Lightner is the other victim. Yesterday. Some teenagers stood in the rain by a memorial. To mourn for the victims. Tonight was no different family members and friends braved the weather to honor the girls in a vigil. Four others remain in the hospital, some with serious injuries. grant Police Released a sketch of a man who beat an 88yearold woman near a San Francisco park last week. They are still searching for the suspect. He is described as a skinny, black man in his 30s, around 5feet 6inches tall. The assualt happened around 6 45 in the morning. On january 8th. Police responded to a home on the 1000 block of visitacion avenue. The suspect was seen leaving the home, then walking eastbound down the street. The grandmother who was beaten is still in the hospital with life threatening injuries. pam a woman. Fought off an attempted kidnapper with an umbrella. As he tried to shove her into his van in san rafael. Police say, she left work on civic center drive, and walked toward the bus stop at the marin county civic center. Shortly before one in the morning. She missed the last bus , and then turned to walk back to work. That is when a dark colored minivan, with tinted windows, pulled up behind her. The woman says, a man got out and grabbed her from behind. She fought back with an umbrella and got away. Police are searching for the suspect. grant now to a bizarre story we first reported last night on kron4 news at nine. After being accused of stabbing a woman and a teenager. And then setting his house on fire. Vacaville police say 37yearold Nathaniel Holland was shot and killed by police after he stabbed a police dog. pam this happened in a creek bed near mason and depot streets. Reporter doug johnson has more from the neighborhood where this all began. With what were learning today. Ken sisk lives across the street. And helped one of the kids in this house pull his little sister out of the buring down home. Vacaville police say it was this man, 37yearold Nathaniel Holland who started that fire with 6 kids inside the home at the time. After he stabbed a 43 yearold woman and a 16yearold girl. Family members tell fox40, those were hollands own children. The adult was their mother. While firefighters got the flames out. And treated the toddler sisk helped rescue for burns to her face and chest. Police searched for holland. Lt. Chris polen, vacaville pd he left the house on foot. Running from the area. Eventually holland made his way to this 711. Where clerks recognized him as the man police were searching for. Sotthey called 911 but realized he had just bought a weapon. Sotpolice say holland made his way to this creek bed. Where officers eventually caught up with him sota Fairfield Police k9 was released on holland. Who then started stabbing the dog. A nearby officer also felt threaten and opened fire. Holland was hit. And despite efforts by officers performing cpr, he didnt make it. The k9 was air lifted to uc davis veterinary hospital and is expected to survive. grant police say say holland is well known to them. He was arrested in 2016 for attacking family members with a baseball bat in december 2014. pam police say, his children have since been placed in child protective custody while their mother recovers in the hospital. pam in National News tonight. Their Administrative Office says the courts should be able to sustain their paid operations until at least january 25th. The department of justice is affected by the shutdown. But the courts are still up and running because theyve been using whats known as no year funds. The judiciary is now taking costcutting measures to try to maintain its operations past january 25th. But the Administrative Office says the money will dry up at some point in the near future. pam a federal judge has denied a request from a federal employees union. To require the government to pay air Traffic Controllers. The controllers are among those employees. Currently working without pay during the partial Government Shutdown. The National Air Traffic Controllers Association requested the temporary restraining order. The district judge said no, and also denied two other requests for temporary restraining orders for other government workers. While the judge did deny all three. But he says if the shutdown continues, and controllers quit, that could compromise safety in the sky. And how the sick out could affect classrooms. pam in the east bay, teachers and staff at several schools in oakland may be preparing for a one day sick out on friday. grant the teachers say, they are frustrated by low pay and underfunded classrooms. Kron 4s Charles Clifford has details. In whats being called a sick out teachers and staff from Skyline High School say they will stage a one day strike on friday. Donna salonga is a teacher at skyline, she says the staff is protesting what they believe are low wages and underfunded classrooms. Sotthe pay that teachers are recieving is not to living wages, especially here in the bay area. Oakland unified is the lowert paid district in the county. Also, its for funding for education. The strike, if it happens, would not be supported by the oakland education association, which normally negotiates Union Contracts with the School District. On tuesday, oakland unified School District superintendent kyla johnsontrammell said the district is opposed to a one day strike. We urge them not to engage in this illegal labor action which is not sanctioned by their union. But, the superintendant did acknowledged the teachers concerns sayingwe want our teachers to know that everyone on the board of education and in district leadership firmly believe that they deserve to be paid more than they currently are. We are hopeful that our teachers will remain in class supporting students on friday. The district also says that if there is a strike on friday, classes at the impacted schools will be held as planned. Salonga says that in addition to staff from skyline high, they also expecting teachers from other schools including oakland high, west oakland middle school, and fremont high to join the one day strike. The plan for is to rally outside Oakland Technical High School on friday morning and the march to the School District offices for a second rally. Kron 4 news. pam it is day two of the teacher strike at the second largest School District in the us, los angeles unified. 30thousand teachers went on strike yesterday following nearly two years of failed negotiations. To stay open, the district brought in 400 substitute teachers. And sent two thousand credentialed administrators back into the classroom. To teach. The superintendent says, the strike is affecting attendance. Yesterday, about 144 thousand students attended school. When on a normal day, they would have closer to 450thousand. Among the demands, the Teachers Union wants a sixanda half percent raise. That would take effect all at once and a year sooner than planned. Also, smaller classrooms. Nurse at schools and more. The district and the union have not met since friday. grant here in the bay area parents in san rafael are petitioning to change the name of the citys dixie School District. It was named after the confederacy during the civil war. The peitions were wrapped in ribbons and they called for a mandatory vote by the District School board on the name change. The districts board of trustees is required to vote on the issue within 40 days. Some of some of the proposed new names for the district include big rock, john muir, live oak, live oak valley. The School District was founded in 1864 and it serves the communities of terra linda, marinwood, lucas valley and a portion of contempo marin. pam an 18yearold uc irvine student died over the weekend after going to a Fraternity Rush party. Now, the fraternity has been suspended indefinitely as police investigate. And tonight, the young mans father is speaking out about the tragic incident. Reporter Mary Beth Mcdade has the story. Noah caleb domingo, a freshman member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, was apparently participating in a rush week event for his fraternity when he attended a big brother little Brother Party on friday night, according to his father. The following morning, the students parents received a phone call informing them of their sons death, dale domingo told ktla. When you get that phone call, its tough. You already know, dale said. I was bracing myself. He said he has no idea how noah died. However, the family fears alcohol may have played a role. Whether this is or wasnt, i dont know, dale said. But if it was, a fraternity is supposed to be a brotherhood and youre supposed to look out for each other and my sons not here. Dale described his son as a real sweet, kind and loving kid, who was a popular basketball and Football Player during his time at Crescenta Valley high. The school will hold a moment of silence in noahs honor at a basketball game tuesday. Noah, the youngest of three siblings, had dreamed of working in Sports Medicine for the lakers. Its been tough, its been hard, dale said. I know his brother and his sister, theyve had a hard time with it. On monday, dale spent the day moving noahs belongings out of his dorm room and comforting his roommate. I gave him a hug and told him learn from what happened, make better choices, the father said. Dormitorio, the universitys interim vice chancellor of student affairs, confirmed police are investigating the incident. In a statement, he said Sigma Alpha Epsilon has been placed on interim suspension, meaning the fraternity must cease all activities amid the active investigation. Dormitorio added that he could not disclose details of the incident because of the investigation. He also did not release any information about the student. We will. Closely examine the larger context in which this tragedy occurred and will be working with the Greek Community to help ensure that they are engaging in behaviors and practices that are in alignment with University Policies values, dormitorio said. Heavy rain and damaging winds will spread north to south as a potent cold front moves through the region. The wednesday evening commute will be severely impacted with urban and small stream flooding likely along with downed trees and branches. Heavy rain will continue for the Central Coast through early thursday morning. Numerous post frontal showers with possible thunderstorms with small hail on thursday.
