( darya ) now our big story. a warning this morning ... stay off the beaches. a high surf advisory is in effect until 9-pm tonight for beaches along the coast in the bay area.( james ) kron 4's sanaz tahernia is live at ocean beach with a look at the conditions... sanaz? there's also a high surf warning in effect right now for bay area beaches. waves are expected to create breakers as high as 50-feet. the conditions could make a normally safe beach dangerous. waves are expected to peak overnight and improve tonight into tomorrow morning. surfers we talked to at ocean beach say the conditions yesterday were ideal but they say they will probably just watch today to avoid the large waves. ( james ) thanks sanaz. ( james ) the high surf advisory means the mavericks surf competition has been postponed. officials say they will wait for better weather conditions. initially they thought the event could be held this week... but now officials say the waves will be too inconsistent. they say there is still three months left for the surfing event this season and that january is typically the best month for mavericks. ( darya ) in the east bay... an oakland police officer is recovering in the hospital this morning after he was shot while off-duty saturday in san leandro. the identity of the officers has not been released. o-p-d has also not released any details about the shooting at this time. the san leandro police department is conducting the investigation into the ( darya ) concord police need your help finding a person they believe is responsible for a shooting. witnesses tell police this man and woman are connected to a shooting yesterday at the sun valley mall. at four o'clock police were called to the mall when a man shot a gun.. the man then dropped the gun near cinnabon. the man then left with the woman seen behind him. no one was injured. ( james ) five people are in the hospital after a pick-up truck crashed into a sizzler restaurant in hayward. police say a two vehicle crash sent the truck off of hesperian boulevard into the corner of the restaurant. the crash happened yesterday afternoon. the five people injured were inside the resaurant.. they had minor ot moderate injures. the sizzler is closed for now... as workers clean up the debris. the windows are also temporarily boarded up. the restaurant gave no timeline of when they think they will re-open. ( james ) in the north bay... petaluma police have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder after he reportedly drove his van into his ex-girlfriend. 24-year-old geradro hernandez led police on a short pursuit before he was arrested in the east washington place shopping center. police say they got a call around 3 saturday afternoon stating a van just struck two people in the smart train parking lot. the two people hit were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. hernandez was booked into the sonoma county jail. ( darya ) in the east bay... police say a group of women is responsible for stealing thousands of dollars worth of merchandise from marshalls department stores. a group of five females were caught last week after police received a call from the fremont marshalls about an in progress robbery. the women were arrested as they came out of the store with the merchandise. police say they women are connected to over 35-thousand dollars in thefts from various marshalls store over the last month. during the arrests, police say they found 292 items in the theives car. ( darya ) in sunnyvale, police are looking for the person who sexually assaulted a woman near a caltrain station. it happened around six thursday morning... a woman was walking in the area of willow and aster avenues just south of the lawrence caltrain station. that's when police say a man approached her from behind and began groping her. a person walking by stopped the assualt and the attacker ran off. the person police are looking for - is described as 5-feet-7 inches tall with a medium build and was wearing a maroon jacket. ( james ) for your money this morning... p- g-&e wants to raise rates. the utility company claims the hike is not related to the handful of lawsuits the company is facing because of the northern california wildfires that turned deadly last year and this year if approved, the average customer will see an additional 10 dollars and 50 cents a month on gas and electric beginning in 20-20. officials say that increase would net an additional 1-point-1 billion dollars --- more than half of which would fund wildfire safety projects. that includes increasing the effort to keep vegetation away from powerlines... installing 600 cameras along with stronger poles and powerlines, and expanding weather-monitoring stations in high-risk fire areas. ( james ) a teacher at newark junior high school has been arrested... accused of inapprpriate contact with several minors. police say 42-year-old aaron holbrook who was a digital media arts teacher sent various inappropriate communitcations to at least six boys. police first heard about the possible inappropriate behavior back in septemeber. during the investigation.. detectives identified the six males all between 14 and 17-years old. holbrook is no longer employed by the newark unified school district. the alameda county district attorney is charing him with six counts of annoying a child under 18- years of age and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. ( darya ) a janitor at farrallon view elementary school has been accused of committing lewd acts with a minor. following months of investigation, the sheriff's office says there is enough evidence to charge 54-year-old joel cortez altamirano with several crimes. the sheriff's office believes lewd acts occurred during school hours and after school. the sheriff's office says it is concerned that there could be additional victims. altamirano is being held at the san mateo county jail on one million dollars bail. ( darya )(ááá2 shotááá) in national headlines ... a bill is working its way through congress ... for an alert to help find missing adults.( james ) our washington d.c. correspondent brie jackson has more on the proposed legislation. the abduction and murder of a 19 year old woman could lead to legislative changes. when ashanti billie vanished her parents say alerting the public was a complicated challenge.we didn't know what to do. first we were just trying to call people and put things on social media.ashanti was aducted in virginia and murderedpolice later discovered her body in north carolinaat the time the 19 year old was too old for an amber alert and too young for a silver alert. to close that gap in the system senator mark warner introduced the "ashanti alert act""it took this tragedy to realize we had a gaping hole in our system. we took care of children, we took care of seniors but for young adults or adults in general there was no alert system" ashanti billie's parents worked with members of congress to craft the legistlation.if passed, the ashanti alert would make sure police can notify the public quickly if people between ages 18 to 65 are in danger.while congress remains divided on other issues, warner believes there's enough bi-partisan support it to pass by the end of this year. supporters see it as a way to not only help locate missing adults...but to honor ashanti's life.never replace the family has gone through. in some having this new system named after ashanti her memory will be preserved. ( darya ) more teens are admitting to vaping...the percentage of high school seniors who say they have vaped nicotine nearly doubled in the past 30 days. the annual "monitoring the future" survey is reporting that the number of students vaping in the last 30 days is up from 11 percent a year ago. that's the largest one-year increase of any substance use in the survery's 43-year history. it says more than one in three high school seniors...and nearly one in three sophomores vaped at least once in the past year. the survey also found a decline in the number of teens using other illicit drugs and those who are drinking. (james) (darya) welcome back to the kron four morning news... lets start the half hour with a check of weather and traffic... after showers yesterday and through the evening skies will continue to dry out this morning with partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies to take us through much of the day today. temperatures in the upper 50's and low 60's today as they will remain for much of the week ahead with a drier trend in weather to take us through the week. no major hot spots. bay bridge wb 80 is less then 30 min from the maze to sf. san mateo bridge less then 30 min from 880 to 101. golden gat bridge drive time less than 30 min from 37 to the toll plaza. richmond bridge drive less than 20 min from the toll to 101 ( darya ) tomorrow, a congressional delegation will visit the u.s. border station where a 7-year-old guatemalan girl was taken before she died in a hospital.( james ) the girl's father is disputing some of the details from homeland security. here's ed lavendera with the story. jakelin was in good health when they turned themselves in to border patrol agents.ruben garcia runs the el paso shelter where the father has stayed since his daughter died. ruben garcia/director, annunciation house: "what is very important to us is to make it very clear that the father told us that my daughter was eating. my daughter was receiving water and liquids and that and that she was fine."according to dhs officials and the father, the young girl first started showing signs of distress and vomiting during a 90-minute bus ride to a border patrol station in lordsburg, new mexico. the girl died about 27 hours after being taken into custody. the cause hasn't been determined.the father has told officials he has "no complaints" about how border patrol agents treated him and his daughter and that he believes everyone around them did everything possible to save the girl's life.ánats of protestáthe girl's death has sparked intense criticism of the trump administration's immigration policy...critics argue migrants are being kept from entering through legal checkpoints to request asylum and pushed into remote dangerous areas.senaida navar/el paso resident: "what happened with this child goes to show just how damaging these policies are for these families."trump administration officials have criticized the father for putting his daughter in such a dangerous situation. immigrant rights activists say the blame is unfair.ruben garcia/director, annunciation house: "their lives are beyond impossible. none of us in the united states can imagine."the news of the girl's death has left her family in this poor guatemalan village devastated. jakelin had turned 7 just days before leaving with her father. the family says she was thrilled by the thought of seeing the united states. domingo caal/jakelin's grandfather: "i'm not gonna speak that much because i can barely take it. it's difficult for us. this happened because we are very much in need. the girl happiness that she would go to the united states. content. but she us it's very difficult."> ( darya ) that was ed lavendera reporting. eleven members of the house of representatives will tour the facility on tuesday. incoming hispanic caucus chairman representative joaquin castro will lead the delegation. he has called for a full investigation into the child's death. ( darya ) an oakland mother... who was deported back to mexico last year-- is waking up with her family in the bay area this morning. maria mendoza-sanchez came to the us illegally in the mid 90s ... went to college and has worked at highland hospital as an oncology nurse up until she was deported in 2017. just over a year later ... us immigration officials approved a waiver allowing her to receive an h1b visa to return to the united states legally .. and in time for christmas. ( darya ) sanchez says being home with her family is going to make this the best christmas ever. ( james ) in the east bay.... the father of a teen who was shot and killed has created a non-profit organization in honor of his son. fremont police are still looking for the suspects in a shooting that killed 17- year old damini chadly ... he was shot to death while driving on torrington court. while the family waits for anshwers, kareem chadley, the victim's dad launched the website dads evoking change dot org. it's aimed at helping dads working through custody battles. he believes the fight for custody of his son, created a chaotic and unstable life for damini. investigation, you're urged to call police. ( james ) a vigil in palo alto honored the lives lost during the tragic sandy hook elementary school massacre. dozens of people stood in the rain holding signs remembering victims of that shooting and others across the country. its been six years since that shooting in newtown connecticut. the bell rang 26 times in downtown palo alto for the 26 lives lost at sandy hook. sunday night's vigil was organized by the peninsula moms demand action group. ( james ) twenty young children lost their lives during that shooting at sandy hook ... as well as six adults. ( james ) as crews clean-up the devasation, some rescuers are now talking about what they faced during the evacuation. it was particularly bad in the town of paradise where most of the deaths occurred. getting the town's 27-thousand residents to safety was challenging, to say the least. exit routes were limited... the fire and smoke was blinding. and although many were able to get out... some could only shelter in place and hope for the best. sotvo starts in black... recut needed couple cuddling each other." captain rick manson/ cal fire butte county:"i found an elderly woman stand on the side of road and i only found her because i got tangled in some power lines that i had to cut.>( james ) all first responders survived. we can expect to hear more incredible stories as the biggest cleanup in state history continues. ( darya ) three contractors paid to help clean-up in the campfire burn zone have been fired. this after offensive pictures posted online sparked outrage from the paradise community. reporter steve large gives us a look at the photos the photos were posted on facebook showing several workers on burned-out property, mocking the destruction they were being paid to clean up.one photo shows the body of a cat killed in the fire, with a beer bottle placed by its mouth.the posts also include offensive captions.a paradise city spokesperson tells cbs13 police are also looking into whether the photos show evidence of laws broken...like trespassing.the company responsible for the crew in the photos fired three employees connected to the online posts saturday."bigge crane and rigging" issued a statement reading "we have identified three participants in this ab-horrent event and their employment has been terminated..."and"bigge regrets that the residents of paradise and butte county have suffered an egregious insult during an already devastating time at the hands of these individuals."as the campfire community tries to heal..a crew of cleanup workers is learning the consequences of their cold-hearted actions. ( darya ) the company that fired the three employees was hired as a sub-contractor under p-g and e... the utility company issued a statement, calling the pictures "reprehensible." ( darya ) a veteran is working overtime to make sure homele war heroes ... get a new place to call home for the holidays. 14 tiny homes will be given to war veterans who now live in shelters or on the streets. michael wolff's construction company started the project a few months ago. he waived most of his costs and got materials donated.. to build what will be be called "veterans village" in santa rosa. the homes are 250 square feet.. including a kitchen, walk in closet and a-d-a compliant bathroom. as an iraq war veteran .. wolfe says wanted to help - his fellow service men. ( darya ) the 14 vets who will get a new roof over their heads have not been selected yet. the goal is to get the homeless veterans the keys to their new tiny homes eve.
